In this study, a surface treatment method using accelerated Ar ions was experimented for exposing the carbon nanotubes (CNT) from the screen-printed CNT paste. After making a cathode electrode on the glass substrate, photo sensitive CNT paste was screen-printed, and then back-side was exposed by UV light. Then, the exposed CNT paste was selectively remained by development. After post-baking, the remained CNT paste was bombarded by accelerated Ar ions for removing some binders and exposing only CNTs. As results, the field emission characteristics were strongly depended on the accelerating energy, bombardment time, and the power of RF plasma ion source. When Ar ions accelerated with 100 eV energy from the 100 W RF plasma source are bombarded on the CNT paste surface for 10 min, the emission level and the uniformity were best.
Few-walled carbon nanotubes (FWNTs)-based field emitters with long term stability are fabricated by using a spray method. Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) sol as a binder was mixed with dispersed solution of FWNTs to enhance the adhesion of FWNTs on the cathode substrate. Due to the strong intermolecular interaction of TEOS to the functional groups attached on CNTs and substrate, CNTs are tightly adhered to the cathode electrode when heat treatment is performed at $150^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour, resulting in a stable electron emission of CNT emitters for long time. Excellent field emission characteristics were exhibited, with a large field enhancement factor and low turn-on voltage, comparable to those of CNT emitters fabricated by a screen printing of CNT paste. Therefore, FWNTs / TEOS hybrid films could be utilized as an alternative for the efficient and reliable field emitters.
Boron nitride (BN) and carbon nitride (CN) films, which have relatively low work functions and commonly exhibit negative electron affinity behaviors, were coated on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by magnetron sputtering. The CNTs were directly grown on metal-tip (tungsten, approximately 500nm in diameter at the summit part) substrates by inductively coupled plasma-chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD). The variations in the morphology and microstructure of CNTs due to coating of the BN and CN films were analyzed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy were used to identify the existence of the coated layers (CN and BN) on CNTs. The electron-emission properties of the BN-coated and CN-coated CNT-emitters were characterized using a high-vacuum field emission measurement system, in terms of their maximum emission currents ($I_{max}$) at 1kV and turn-on voltage ($V_{on}$) for approaching $1{\mu}A$. The results showed that the $I_{max}$ current was significantly increased and the $V_{on}$ voltage were remarkably reduced by the coating of CN or BN films. The measured values of $I_{max}-V_{on}$ were as follows; $176{\mu}A$-500V for the 5nm CN-coated emitter and $289{\mu}A$-540V for the 2nm BN-coated emitter, respectively, while the $I_{max}-V_{on}$ of the as-grown (i.e., uncoated) emitter was $134{\mu}A$-620V. In addition, the CNT emitters coated with thin CN or BN films also showed much better long-term (up to 25h) stability behaviors in electron emission, as compared with the conventional CNT emitter.
The field emission characteristics are studied by simulation for carbon nanotube triode structures with a strip-shaped emitter and a gate hole aligned with it. Two structures, one with double-edge and the other with single edge are analyzed. They show good emission characteristics. Emissions of electrons are concentrated on the edges of emitter and the emitted current increases as the distance between emitter and gate decreases. For single-edged emitter, the emitted electrons form a narow strip-shaped beam which has a good directionality. These triode structures have advantages in that they can be easily fabricated and aligned for assembly.
By approaching the counter electrode to the CNT emitter, remarkable reduction of the cathode operating voltage has been accomplished in the under-gate CNT cathode structure. The peak emission current density of 2.5 ms/$cm^2$, which is sufficient for high brightness CNT field emission display, was obtained at the cathode-to-gate voltage of 57 V when the CNT-to-counter electrode gap was 2.2 ${\mu}m$. The gate current was less than 10 % of the anode current. The CNT cathode with low driving voltage can help the cost-effective field emission display implemented.
The uniformity of emission mage and field emission properties of carbon nanotube(CNT) cathodes dependence on CNT particle dispersion were investigated for field emission displays. We used multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) synthesized by CVD method as the field emitter materials. CNT dispersion in CNT ink was carried out by ultrasonication and shaking methods. According to CNT dispersion conditions, the uniformity of emission image and field emission properties of CNT cathodes were greatly affected. The smaller particles of filler materials and CNT powders provide the better properties of the CNT cathodes.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown on conical tip substrates by using various methods such as electrophoretic deposition, dip-coating, and spray. The scanning electron microscope measurement showed that the spray method ascertained the most uniform deposition of CNTs. The CNT-emitter that was fabricated by the spray method revealed the lowest turn on voltage of electron emission and the highest emission current. In addition, the spray-produced CNT emitter showed the most stable long-term emission characteristics.

Carbon nanotube (CNT) cathodes having a trench structure similar to the structure of the gated triodetype cathode were successfully fabricated by a screenprinting method with multi-walled carbon nanotubes. We observed that a liquid method not only readily removes the organic residues on the CNT films, but also satisfactorily protrudes the CNTs out of the electrode surface. The CNT cathodes prepared by the liquid method showed a turned-on field of $1.4\;V/{\mu}m$. The emission current density of them was about $3.1\;mA/cm^2$ at the electric field of $3\; V/{\mu}m$. The liquid method appears to be a promising surface treatment of CNT cathode for gated triode-type FEDs applications.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been studied as an ideal material for field emitters due to the high aspect ratio, excellent electrical property and good mechanical strength. There were many reports on CNT emitters fabricated on rigid substrates, but rare reports about CNT flexible field emitters. Recently, we considered that CNTs can be a good candidate for a flexible field emitter material because of their excellent Young's modulus and elasticity, which could not be achieved with metal tips or semiconducting nanowire tips. In this work, we demonstrated the CNT flexible field emitters fabricated by a simple method and studied the field emission properties of the CNT flexible field emitters under various bending conditions. The flexible field emitters showed stable and uniform emission characteristics. Especially, there is no remarkable change of the field emission properties at the CNT flexible field emitters according to the bending conditions. The CNT flexible field emitters also exhibited a good field emission performance like the low turn-on field and high emission current. Therefore, we suggest that the CNT flexible emitters can be used in many practical applications under different bending conditions.
A carbon nanotube field emission display (CNT FED) panel with a 2 inch diagonal size was fabricated through screen printing of a prepared photo-sensitive CNT paste and vacuum in-line sealing technology. After surface treatment of the patterned CNT, only the carbon nanotube tips are uniformly exposed on the surface. The diameter of the exposed CNTs are usually about 20nm. The sealing temperature of the panel is around 390 $^{\circ}C$ and the vacuum level is obtained with $1.4{\times}10^{-5}$torr at the sealing. The field emission properties of the diode type CNT FED panel are characterized. Currently, we are in the process of developing a triode type CNT FED with a self-aligned gate-emitter structure.
