Recently, transfer learning techniques with a base convolutional neural network (CNN) model have widely gained acceptance in early detection and classification of crop diseases to increase agricultural productivity with reducing disease spread. The transfer learning techniques based classifiers generally achieve over 90% of classification accuracy for crop diseases using dataset of crop leaf images (e.g., PlantVillage dataset), but they have ability to classify only the pre-trained diseases. This paper provides with an evaluation scheme on selecting an effective base CNN model for crop disease transfer learning with regard to the accuracy of trained target crops as well as of untrained target crops. First, we present transfer learning models called CDC (crop disease classification) architecture including widely used base (pre-trained) CNN models. We evaluate each performance of seven base CNN models for four untrained crops. The results of performance evaluation show that the DenseNet201 is one of the best base CNN models.

In this paper, we propose a method for diagnosing ball bearing vibration using transfer learning. STFT, which can analyze vibration signals in time-frequency, was used as input to CNN to diagnose failures. In order to rapidly learn CNN-based deep artificial neural networks and improve diagnostic performance, we proposed a transfer learning-based deep learning learning technique. For transfer learning, the feature extractor and classifier were selectively learned using a VGG-based image classification model, the data set for learning was publicly available ball bearing vibration data provided by Case Western Reserve University, and performance was evaluated by comparing the proposed method with the existing CNN model. Experimental results not only prove that transfer learning is useful for condition diagnosis in ball bearing vibration data, but also allow other industries to use transfer learning to improve condition diagnosis.
Core algorithm of deep learning Convolutional Neural Network(CNN) shows better performance than other machine learning algorithms. However, if there is not sufficient data, CNN can not achieve satisfactory performance even if the classifier is excellent. In this situation, it has been proven that the use of transfer learning can have a great effect. In this paper, we apply two transition learning methods(freezing, retraining) to three CNN models(ResNet-50, Inception-V3, DenseNet-121) and compare and analyze how the classification performance of CNN changes according to the methods. As a result of statistical significance test using various evaluation indicators, ResNet-50, Inception-V3, and DenseNet-121 differed by 1.18 times, 1.09 times, and 1.17 times, respectively. Based on this, we concluded that the retraining method may be more effective than the freezing method in case of transition learning in image classification problem.

This study proposes a deep learning-based flat foot classification methodology using transfer learning. We used a transfer learning with VGG16 pre-trained model and a data augmentation technique to generate a model with high predictive accuracy from a total of 176 image data consisting of 88 flat feet and 88 normal feet. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model, we performed an experiment comparing the prediction accuracy of the basic CNN-based model and the prediction model derived through the proposed methodology. In the case of the basic CNN model, the training accuracy was 77.27%, the validation accuracy was 61.36%, and the test accuracy was 59.09%. Meanwhile, in the case of our proposed model, the training accuracy was 94.32%, the validation accuracy was 86.36%, and the test accuracy was 84.09%, indicating that the accuracy of our model was significantly higher than that of the basic CNN model.
This paper presents an enhancement method of document restoration capability which is robust for security, loss, and contamination, It is based on two methods, that is, encryption and DnCNN(DeNoise Convolution Neural Network). In order to implement this encryption method, a mathematical model is applied as a spatial frequency transfer function used in optics of 2D image information. Then a method is proposed with optical interference patterns as encryption using spatial frequency transfer functions and using mathematical variables of spatial frequency transfer functions as ciphers. In addition, by applying the DnCNN method which is bsed on deep learning technique, the restoration capability is enhanced by removing noise. With an experimental evaluation, with 65% information loss, by applying Pre-Training DnCNN Deep Learning, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) shows 11% or more superior in compared to that of the spatial frequency transfer function only. In addition, it is confirmed that the characteristic of CC(Correlation Coefficient) is enhanced by 16% or more.
Over the past decade, researchers were able to solve complex medical problems as well as acquire deeper understanding of entire issue due to the availability of machine learning techniques, particularly predictive algorithms and automatic recognition of patterns in medical imaging. In this study, a technique called transfer learning has been utilized to classify Magnetic Resonance (MR) images by a pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Rather than training an entire model from scratch, transfer learning approach uses the CNN model by fine-tuning them, to classify MR images into Alzheimer's disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and normal control (NC). The performance of this method has been evaluated over Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging (ADNI) dataset by changing the learning rate of the model. Moreover, in this study, in order to demonstrate the transfer learning approach we utilize different pre-trained deep learning models such as GoogLeNet, VGG-16, AlexNet and ResNet-18, and compare their efficiency to classify AD. The overall classification accuracy resulted by GoogLeNet for training and testing was 99.84% and 98.25% respectively, which was exceptionally more than other models training and testing accuracies.

There are some problems in network traffic classification (NTC), such as complicated statistical features and insufficient training samples, which may cause poor classification effect. A NTC architecture based on one-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and transfer learning is proposed to tackle these problems and improve the fine-grained classification performance. The key points of the proposed architecture include: (1) Model classification--by extracting normalized rate feature set from original data, plus existing statistical features to optimize the CNN NTC model. (2) To apply transfer learning in the classification to improve NTC performance. We collect two typical network flows data from Youku and YouTube, and verify the proposed method through extensive experiments. The results show that compared with existing methods, our method could improve the classification accuracy by around 3-5%for Youku, and by about 7 to 27% for YouTube.
In autonomous driving systems, the ability to classify pedestrians in images captured by cameras is very important for pedestrian safety. In the past, after extracting features of pedestrians with HOG(Histogram of Oriented Gradients) or SIFT(Scale-Invariant Feature Transform), people classified them using SVM(Support Vector Machine). However, extracting pedestrian characteristics in such a handcrafted manner has many limitations. Therefore, this paper proposes a method to classify pedestrians reliably and effectively using CNN's(Convolutional Neural Network) deep features and transfer learning. We have experimented with both the fixed feature extractor and the fine-tuning methods, which are two representative transfer learning techniques. Particularly, in the fine-tuning method, we have added a new scheme, called M-Fine(Modified Fine-tuning), which divideslayers into transferred parts and non-transferred parts in three different sizes, and adjusts weights only for layers belonging to non-transferred parts. Experiments on INRIA Person data set with five CNN models(VGGNet, DenseNet, Inception V3, Xception, and MobileNet) showed that CNN's deep features perform better than handcrafted features such as HOG and SIFT, and that the accuracy of Xception (threshold = 0.5) isthe highest at 99.61%. MobileNet, which achieved similar performance to Xception and learned 80% fewer parameters, was the best in terms of efficiency. Among the three transfer learning schemes tested above, the performance of the fine-tuning method was the best. The performance of the M-Fine method was comparable to or slightly lower than that of the fine-tuningmethod, but higher than that of the fixed feature extractor method.
Artificial neural network is widely used for its excellent performance and implementability. However, traditional neural network needs to learn the system from scratch, with the addition of new input data, the variation of the observation environment, or the change in the form of input/output data. To resolve such a problem, the technique of transfer learning has been proposed. Transfer learning constructs a newly developed target system partially updating existing system and hence provides much more efficient learning process. Until now, transfer learning is mainly studied in the field of image processing and is not yet widely employed in acoustic data processing. In this paper, focusing on the scalability of transfer learning, we apply the concept of transfer learning to the problem of guitar chord classification and evaluate its performance. For this purpose, we build a target system of convolutional neutral network (CNN) based 48 guitar chords classification system by applying the concept of transfer learning to a source system of CNN based 24 guitar chords classification system. We show that the system with transfer learning has performance similar to that of conventional system, but it requires only half the learning time.

Recently, various deep learning framework models such as Tensorflow, Pytorch, Keras, etc. have appeared. In addition, CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) is applied to image recognition using frameworks such as Tensorflow, Pytorch, and Keras, and the optimization model in image classification is mainly used. In this paper, based on the results of training the CNN model with the Paitotchi and tensor flow frameworks most often used in the field of deep learning image recognition, the two frameworks are compared and analyzed for image analysis. Derived an optimized framework.
