  • In this paper, the BTR (Behind the Tape Reader) type communication unit which interfaces the IEBM PC/XT to the FANUC 5M NC controller is developed, making it possible to send NC part program from the memory of IBM PC/XT to the NC controller. As an example of integration of CAD and CAM technologies, the machining of a two dimensional hand-written free line which incorporates the processes of geometric data acquisition using a digitizing tablet, automatic part programming and control of NC milling machine operation is demonstrated.

  • For the development of an ultra-precision CNC polishing system including on-machine measurement system, we study a corrective polishing algorithm. We analyze and test the unit removal profiles for a ball type polishing tool. Using these results we calculate dwell time distributions and residual errors for a target removal shape. We use the polishing simulation method and feed rate calculation method for the dwell time calculation. We test corrective polishing algorithm with an optical glass. The target removal shape is a sine wave that has amplitude 0.3 micro meters. We find this polishing process has a machining resolution of nanometer order and is effective for sub-micrometer order machining. This result will be used for the software development of the CNC polishing system.

  • One of the major limitations of productivity and quality in metal cutting is the machining accuracy of machine tools. The machining accuracy is affected by geometric and thermal errors of the machine tools. In this study, the compensation device is manufactured in order to compensate thermal error of machine tools under the real-time. This paper models of the thermal errors for error analysis and develops on-the-machine measurement system by which the volumetric error are measured and compensated. The thermal error is modeled by means of angularity errors of a column and thermal drift error of the spindle unit which are measured by the touch probe unit with a star type styluses, a designed spherical ball artifact, and five gap sensors. In order to compensate thermal characteristics under several operating conditions, experiments performed with five gap sensors and manufactured compensation device on the horizontal machining center.

  • For the development of a ultra-precision CNC polishing system including on-machine measurement system, we study a corrective polishing algorithm. We calculated unit removal profiles for various flat type polishing tools and polishing tool positions. Using these results we simulate the corrective polishing process based on dwell time control. We calculate dwell time distributions and residual error of the polishing simulation method and the FFT calculation method. We test corrective polishing algorithm with an optical glass. The target removal shape is a sine wave that has amplitude 0.3 micro meters. We find this polishing process has a machining resolution of nanometer order and is effective for sub-micrometer order machining. • Increasing demands on precision machining of free-form surface have necessitated that the tool to move not only position error as small as possible, but also with smoothly varying feedrates. This paper presents new algorithm for high precision 3D(3-dimensional) NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) interpolation in the reference-pulse technique. Based o the minimum path error strategy, interpolation algorithm was designed to follow the NURBS curve. Using this algorithm a real-time 3D NURBS interpolator was developed in software. The algorithm implemented in a PC showed promising results in interpolation error and speed performance. It is expected that this can be applied to the CNC systems for the high precision machining of complex shapes.

  • The present CNC machining system if without any CAM software has been limited to 2D or 2.5D plane cut using lines, arcs and curves. If the CNC is equipped with a surface interpolation module and a surface reorganizing module inside it, we can easily try 3D surface machining without aid of CAM software. The existing NURBS surface interpolator is simple and direct to use for a unit surface. However, it enables only machining of each reference surface individually even when machining a simple composite surface. In this paper, we propose a method which can unify and reorganize various reference surfaces with a newly defined NURBS surface cycle command: a multi-repetitive cycle command such as in a CNC turning center. We also introduce a reorganizing rule for reference surfaces using NURBS properties. The usefulness of the proposed method is verified through computer simulation.

  • Thermal error compensation has been developed for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining center with moving heat sources. The thermal error in CNC machining center has an effect on machining accuracy more than the geometric error does. Thus, temperature distributions of a spindle unit have been analyzed numerically by a Finite Differential Method and experimentally by an infrared (IR) camera in this study. A multiple variable method has been derived to estimate the thermal deformation of the machine origin stably and effectively after measuring deformation and temperature data. The experimental results for a vertical machining center have shown that the thermal errors of the machine origins were reduced more than 30% by the developed method.

  • Plasma arc cutting is a fusion cutting process in which a gas-constricted arc is employed to produce a high-temperature, high-velocity plasma jet on the workpiece. This process provides some advantages such as increased cutting velocity, excellent working accuracy and the ability to cut special materials (widely used stainless steels and Al-alloys, for example), when compared with iconventional oxyfuel gas cutting. From the view point of price and reliability of the power source, plasma arc cutting has also some distinct advantages over laser beam cutting. High-speed machines with NC or CNC systems are needed for the plasma arc or laser beam cutting process, while for oxyfuel gas cutting, low-speed machines with copying templates or optical-shape tracking sensors can be applied. The low price and high flexibility of the microprocessor arc contributing more and more the application of CNC system in the plasma arc cutting process, as in other manufacturing fields. From these points of view, a microprocessor-based plasma arc cutting system was developed by using a reference-pulse system, and its performance was tested. The interpolating routines were programmed in the assembly language for saving the memory volume and improving the compouting speed, which has an intimate relationship with the available cutting velocity.
