  • This study addresses the issue of safety of the splash guard of a computer numerical control (CNC) machine tool at the design stage. As an impact test for evaluating safety requirements such as strength under the safety regulation is an expensive and iterative task, it is necessary to develop a new method to minimize the task of the impact test for development of the machine tool. In this study, explicit finite element method was adopted for replacement of the impact test of the splash guard of a machine tool at the design stage. A finite element model was developed for implementing the impact test on an actual vertical CNC lathe and then produced the analysis including plastic strain and deformation to enable the safety of its splash guard to be determined. The analysis results demonstrated that the finite element method can be applied to safety evaluation for design of the splash guard of a CNC machine tool.

  • A drum cam with rotational follower has a cam mechanism and it is mainly used in its application such as index table and ATC of machine tool. Also its use can reduce the backlash in its kinematic movement. To machine the drum cam with rotational follower, 5-axis CNC machine tool is generally used and its kinematic principle is included in it's design. Until now, the commercialized CAM software can't cover the application of the drum cam machining. Even if, some special software was developed for machining a drum cam, the post processing method for finish machining was not developed yet. And to overcome the problem, the form tool is still used on the tool path of rough machining. This study includes the induction of the post processing technique for the finish machining of drum cam on three 5-axis CNC machine tools, type AC, AB and BC. To prove the finishing geometric profile, the result was clearly verified through inspection and geometric measurement after direct machining of the drum cam in AC type 5-axis machine tool in this study.

  • End milling is available for machining the various shape of products and has been widely applied in many manufacturing industries. The quality of products depends on a machine tool performance and machining conditions. Recognition characteristics of the cutting condition is becoming a critical requirement for improving the utilization and flexibility of present-day CNC machine tools. The measurement of tool wear would be performed by coordinate-measuring machine(CMM). However, the usage of CMM requires much time and cost. In order to overcome the difficulties, on-line measurement(OLM) system was applied for a tool wear measurement. This study shows a reliable technique for the reduction of machining error components by developing a system using a CCD camera and machine vision to be able to precisely measure the size of tool wear in flat end milling for CNC machining. The CCD camera and machine vision attached to a CNC machine can determine tool wear quickly and easily.

  • In this paper, a method has been proposed for error measurement/diagnosis of CNC machine tools using the ball link bar on three dimensional space. For the circular motion error measurement, deviation between the desired and actual test path has been measured and analysed using a new type of ball link which incorporates ideal three point contact between reference balls and sockets. Computer program for the error evaluation has been developed and implemented under PC environment. Using the developed program, the circular test data on a CNC machine tool have been analysed, and thus, machine tool errors were effectively evaluated.

  • Miniaturized machine tool can be used to produce 3D features based on CNC and PC-NC technology in the micro/meso scale. Wide applications of CNC technology are developed and there are lots of know-hows in the cutting process and their CNC application. It helps micro/meso scale structure to machine components, which can be used directly for practical applications. In the present research, as the machine tool is miniaturized, the manufacturing machine tools costs less when compared to the equipment used in other micromachining technologies. Moreover, with advancement of micro tool technology, the cutting process can be used to produce micro/meso scale parts. In conclusion, the proposed system can reduce the cost by utilizing the current machining technology, and as a result, complex micro/meso parts can be produced efficiently with high productivity.

  • As CNC machine tool is one of core elements of manufacturing system, it is much important that it remains without troubleshoots. As a virtual machine is a recent alternative using IT for optimal utilization of CNC machine tool, it is a computer model that represents a CNC machine tool. But a virtual machine is still conceptual. So, in this paper, it is proposed that a virtual machine be a realistic model in the fault diagnosis module. For this purpose, the fault diagnosis system of machine tool using CORBA and fault diagnosis expert system has been implemented. Using this system, we have expections to diagnose exactly and prompty without the restriction of time or location, to reduce MTTR(Mean Time To Repair) and finally to increase the availability of manufacturing system.

In machining technology, combination technology of turning, milling, and grinding and in machining energy technology. combination of mechanical, electrical, and chemical technology are developed. This paper describes hybrid machine technology for combination of machining, on-machine measurement, on-machine CAM, and on-machine remote monitoring and control in open architecture controller environment. For on-machine measurement, non-contact measurement technology based on CAD information is developed. For on-machine CAM, interactive CAM program for automatic NC program generation and tool path simulation is developed. For generation on-machine remote monitoring and control, suitable interface method between web program and CNC is proposed. • In this paper, we propose software algorithms which provide acceleration/deceleration characteristics essential to high dynamic performance at the transient states where industrial robots or CNC machine tools start and stop. Software acceleration/deceleration methods are derived from the mathematical analyses of typical hardware systems controlling acceleration/deceleration. These methods make servo motors, which drive axes of motion, start and stop smoothly without vibration in the repeated tools. The path error, which is one of the most significant factors in the performance evaluation of industrial robots or CNC machine tools, is analyzed for linear, exponential, and parabolic acceleration/deceleration algorithms in case of circular interpolation. The analyses show that path error consists of the distance between the required path and generated one through acceleration/deceleration, and that between the generated one through acceleration/deceleration algorithm and the actual one of the end effector of the industrial robot or tool of the CNC equipment.

  • This study has been focused on the development of an open architecture CNC system and integration of core application technology for machine tool such as a remote monitoring/diagnosis system, NURBS interpolation, and cutting process simulation. To do this, we have developed a comprehensive CNC software including the basic HMI, screen editor, ASF, and visual builder. As a control hardware system for machine tool, the universal I/O module and CNC main unit have been developed. Then the remote monitoring/diagnosis system and NURBS interpolation have been implemented in the CNC software. The cutting simulation software will be used for enhancing the productivity of machine tools. Through a simulator and test bed, the whole technology has been verified.
