  • A supernumerary ovary is a rare gynecological anomaly, and is usually excised due to its malignant transformation potential. We report a case of a supernumerary ovary and endometriosis situated on the anterior rectosigmoid colon. When laparoscopy was conducted, a firm, 5-cm mass was discovered on the anterior rectosigmoid colon along with normal ovaries. In this case, the discovery of a supernumerary ovary implied the presence of endometriosis. It is unusual for endometriosis and a supernumerary ovary to exist simultaneously.

  • N-value by the SPT is one of the key parameter for settlement evaluation. However, if the ground is firm, the usual N-value is not blow count of 30cm depth penetration. In such case, if N-value is more than 50 with 30cm penetration, the N-value 50 is applied for settlement analysis. Therefore, in this study, the modified method of N-value estimation is suggested and compared the settlement by Elastic Theory, and the measured field data by Plate Load Test. As the result of this study, it is shown that the settlement by Elastic Theory with the modified N-value is more accurate than settlement by usual N-value. The application of Elastic Theory for pure sand is also evaluated in this paper.

  • In 1835,Schlesinger first described a case of subisthmlc lower thoracic aortic coarctation. Since Olim`s unsuccessful reconstructive surgery in 1949 and Beattie`s first successful resection with homograft replacement on such a lesion in 1951 were reported, about 20 cases of atypical aortic coarctation had been treated by definitive surgery until 1964. In Korea, only 2 cases of atypical aortic coarctation treated by bypass graft were reported until now. This is the third case-report treated by reconstructive surgery. The patient,11 year old girl who had 2 year history of headache, visual weakness, intermittent claudlcation, and general weakness, was first diagnosed of having the hypertension due to atypical coarctation by the findings of high blood pressure[170/110mmHg] at the upper extremity and weak pulsation on both femoral artery, murmur on the epigastrium, absence of aortic knob, and aorto graphy. Aortography demonstrated the isolated segmental narrowing[length 5cm, diameter 0.4cm] at the level of aortic hiatus 2cm above celiac arterial origin, the dilated right 9th, 10th, 11th intercostal arteries with multiple dimunitive collaterals and no associated abnormalities in the other arteries. Preoperatlve positive findings were strong positive mantoux test, high AST[720 units]. transient mild cardiomegaly with right lung infiltration on chest X-ray and suggestive left ventricular hypertrophy on ECG. On December 1970, through separate left thoracotomy and abdominal approach, bypass graft between descending thoracic aorta and abdominal aorta below renal artery was performed. The operation was first successful with satisfactory reduction of hypertension on the upper trunk[postoperatlve 130/80mmHg] and strong pulsation on the lower extremities[postop. O, postop. 140/100mmHg]. However,6 weeks after surgery, she expired of sudden hemoptysis and shock due to anastomotic leak within the thorax. Operative finding disclosed that the affected aorta was firm, with rich periaortic fibrosis and the outer diameter of stenotic site was not attenuated. Histopathology of the resected specimen was also compatible with primary arteritis.

  • Purpose: Soft tissue chondroma is a rare benign tumor, found mainly on the palm and sole and grows slowly. Typically, mature hyaline cartilage is the dominant pathological feature. There are reports that assert soft tissue chondromas to be a cause of median nerve entrapment syndrome. However, this is the first case report showing soft tissue chondroma to be a cause of simultaneous median and ulnar neuropathy. Methods: A 62 year-old woman presented with chief complaints of numbness and hypoesthesia of her right palm for 4 to 5 years, and a palpable mass on her right palm that had been increasing in size slowly for 3 years. Physical examination revealed a firm, mobile, non-tender and about $3{\times}3\;cm^2$ sized mass in the center of the right palm. Electromyography showed entrapment neuropathy of the median and ulnar nerve. Ultrasonography showed an approximately $5.7\;cm^2$ mass below the flexor tendon of ring finger. Upon surgical excision, a $3{\times}3\;cm^2$ mass attached to the flexor digitorum profundus of ring finger and redness and hypertrophy of both the median and ulnar nerve were discovered. Mass excision was performed gently and the specimen was referred for histopathologic study. Mass excision resulted in median and ulnar nerve release. Results: The pathology report confirmed the mass to be a soft tissue chondroma with mature hyaline cartilage. The patient exhibited post-operative improvement of her symptoms and did not show any complications. Conclusion: This is the first case report showing soft tissue chondroma to be a cause of simultaneous median and ulnar neuropathy.

  • Nickel (Ni) electroplating was implemented by using a metal Ni powder in order to establish a $^{63}Ni$ plating condition on the PN junction semiconductor needed for production of beta-voltaic battery. PN junction semiconductors with a Ni seed layer of 500 and $1000{\AA}$ were coated with Ni at current density from 10 to $50mA\;cm^{-2}$. The surface roughness and average grain size of Ni deposits were investigated by XRD and SEM techniques. The roughness of Ni deposit was increased as the current density was increased, and decreased as the thickness of Ni seed layer was increased. The results showed that the optimum surface shape was obtained at a current density of $10mA\;cm^{-2}$ in seed layer with thickness of $500{\AA}$, $20mA\;cm^{-2}$ of $1000{\AA}$. Also, pure Ni deposit was well coated on a PN junction semiconductor without any oxide forms. Using the line width of (111) in XRD peak, the average grain size of the Ni thick firm was measured. The results showed that the average grain size was increased as the thickness of seed layer was increased.

  • Acquired digital fibrokeratoma is very a rare, benign, fibrous, and hyperkeratotic skin tumor that develops most frequently on the finger or toe. The tumor usually occurs in adults as a solitary, dome-shaped lesion. Sometimes, it appears as a rudimentary supernumerary digit and may be misdiagnosed as an accessory nail (double nail) or verruca vulgaris. The pathophysiology of an acquired digital fibrokeratoma is unknown. On the other hand, trauma has often been proposed as a predisposing factor for an acquired type of digital fibrokeratoma. This paper reports a case of trauma-related acquired digital fibrokeratoma presenting as a supernumerary digit and nail in a 36-year-old male. This case is presented with a 0.5 cm×0.4 cm×1.3 cm sized, firm, hyperkeratotic, protruding mass over the left second finger nail.

  • A male mixed breed dog with unknown age (case 1) and 5-year-old female golden retriever (case 2) were admitted to the Department of Veterinary Pathology at College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University after sudden death. At necropsy, stifle region of case 1 was replaced by coalescing firm tan nodules approximately 1-3 cm in diameter. Neoplastic nodules were also presented in the lung. In case 2, the spleen was enlarged 3-5 times its normal size and numerous firm tan nodules were noted in the kidney, pericardium, diaphragm and lymph nodes. Histopathologically, the neoplastic masses of case 1 consisted of plump spindle cells having abundant cytoplasm and indistinct cell borders that formed interlacing bundle. In case 2, the masses were consisted of round to polygonal cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and eccentric nuclei. Numerous multinucleated giant cells containing nuclei of various sizes were noted. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells of all two cases stained intensely with vimentin and lysozyme. Based on the gross and light microscopic findings together with immunohistochemistry, both cases were diagnosed as localized histiocytic sarcoma with pulmonary metastasis and disseminated histiocytic sarcoma, respectively.

  • ZnO epilayer was synthesized by the pulsed laser deposition(PLD) process on Al$_2$O$_3$ subsorte after irradiating the surface of ZnO sintered pellet by ArF(193nm) excimer laser. The epilayers of ZnO were achieved on sapphire(A1203) substrate at the 境mperature of 400$^{circ}$C. The crystalline structure of epilayer was investigated by the Photoluminescence and double crystal X-ray diffraction(DCXD). The carrier density and mobility of ZnO epilayer measure with Hall effect by van der Pauw mothod are $8.27\times$1016cm$^{-3}$ and 299 cm$^{2}$/V$\cdot$s at 293 K respectively, The temperature dependence of the energy band gap of the ZnO obtained from the absorption spectra was well described by the Varshni's relation, E$_g$(T)= 3.3973 eV - ($2.69\times$ 10$^{-4}$ eV/K)T$^{2}$/(T + 463K). After the as-grown ZnO epilayer was annealed in Zn atmospheres, oxygen and vaccum the origin of point defects of ZnO atmospheres has been investigated by the photoluminescence(PL) at 10K. The native defects of V$_{Zn}$, V$_{O}$, Zn$_{int}$, and O$_{int}$ obtained by PL measurements were classified as a donor or acceptor type. In addition we concluded that the heat-treatment in the oxygen atmosphere converted ZnO thin films to an optical p-type. Also, we confirmed that vacuum in ZnO/Al$_2$O$_3$ did not firm the native defects because vacuum in ZnO thin films existed in the form of stable bonds.

  • A 10-year-old female collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu) was referred due to a large palpable mass in caudal abdomen. Physical examination revealed a firm and freely moveable mass (15 ${\times}$ 9 cm) in the right side of caudal abdomen. Thoracic radiographic findings revealed a few well circumscribed nodules. This case was diagnosed as mammary gland squamous cell carcinoma with pulmonary metastasis based on histopathological and immunohistochemical findings. This type of mammary gland tumors is uncommon in wild animals. The patient survived for one month after the diagnosis. This is the first case report of mammary squamous cell carcinoma in a collard peccary and the second case report of metastatic carcinoma to lung in a collared peccary.

  • Protein affinity membranes based on polyethersulfone (PES) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were prepared by using an electrospinning method. The changes in the size of nanofiber according to the various conditions of electrospinning (concentration of spinning solution, voltage, flow rate, tip to collector distance) were investigated, and the preparation conditions of the affinity membrane were optimized. XPS and FT-IR results showed the firm incorporation of BSA with PES. It was found PES-BSA nanofibers could be prepared at the temp. of $20{\sim}22^{\circ}C$ and humidity of $45{\sim}55%$. The size of nanofibers increased with increase of the content of PES in the spinning solution while BSA did not affect much to the size of nanofiber. It was also revealed that the narrow size distribution of nanofiber could be obtained with PES 7 wt%, BSA 0.7 wt%, HFP 92.3 wt% at the electrospinning conditions of 1 mL/hr, 10 cm TCD, and 10 kV.
