  • We propose a novel in-line fiber optic circular polarizing mirror utilizing cholesteric lIquid crystal (CLC) polymer [11m for the fiber laser applications. Ions matrix representation of this device has been derived and venfied experimentally. In a Fabry-Perot cavity configuration, a CLC fiber optic rmrror has been used to achieve longitudinal mode suppression as well as to obtain passively mode~locked laser operations with 630 fs laser pulses via nonlinear polarization evoluhon.oluhon.

Radical Scavenging and Anti-obesity Effects of Various Extracts from Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) (추출용매에 따른 울금 추출물의 라디칼 소거능 및 항비만 효과)

  • In the present study, the levels of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, as well as activities of radical scavenging (DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity) and anti-obesity were assessed with cold water (CLC), hot water (CLH), and methanolic (CLM) extracts of Curcuma longa L. (turmeric). Our results showed that the phenolic compounds of CLC, CLH and CLM were $3.68{\pm}0.80%$, $3.94{\pm}0.74%$ and $9.01{\pm}0.73%$, respectively. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities of the CLM were significantly higher than that of the water extracts (CLC and CLH). During the adipocyte differentiation, the treatment of CLM more significantly inhibited lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells than that of the water extracts. These results indicate that the stimulation of radical scavenging potential and the inhibition of adipogenesis were brought on by the lipophilic compounds of turmeric.

Comparison of Functional Gene Annotation of Toxascaris leonina and Toxocara canis using CLC Genomics Workbench

  • The ascarids, Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina, are probably the most common gastrointestinal helminths encountered in dogs. In order to understand biological differences of 2 ascarids, we analyzed gene expression profiles of female adults of T. canis and T. leonina using CLC Genomics Workbench, and the results were compared with those of free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. A total of 2,880 and 7,949 ESTs were collected from T. leonina and T. canis, respectively. The length of ESTs ranged from 106 to 4,637 bp with an average insert size of 820 bp. Overall, our results showed that most functional gene annotations of 2 ascarids were quite similar to each other in 3 major categories, i.e., cellular component, biological process, and molecular function. Although some different transcript expression categories were found, the distance was short and it was not enough to explain their different lifestyles. However, we found distinguished transcript differences between ascarid parasites and free-living nematodes. Understanding evolutionary genetic changes might be helpful for studies of the lifestyle and evolution of parasites.

  • This study investigated the feasibility of $CaSnO_3$ particles as an oxygen carrier in chemical looping combustion (CLC). $CaSnO_3$ particles had a perovskite crystal structure and showed the structural stability after repeated reduction-oxidation reactions. The oxygen transfer capacity was 15.4 wt% almost the same as the calculated theoretical value from the crystal structure transformation during reduction. After $10^{th}$ cycles of reduction and oxidation, the oxygen transfer capacity and rate were still maintained constantly at an operating temperature. In conclusion, $CaSnO_3$ particles could be a good alternative material as an oxygen carrier in CLC.

  • Recently the Solid State Drive (SSD) is widely used for storage system of various mobile devices. In this case, existing buffer replacement algorithms based on the hard disk do not consider characteristics of flash memory, so it caused performance degradation of the system. This paper proposes a novel buffer replacement policy called ABM (Asymmetric Buffer Management) policy. ABM policy separates read and write buffer space and applies different replacement unit and replacement algorithm for each buffer. In addition, write buffer delay scheme and dynamic size adaptation algorithm is applied for better performance. ABM outperforms other replacement policies, especially ABM-LRU-CLC shows 32% better performance than normal LRU policy.

Improving the Microbial Safety of Fresh-Cut Endive with a Combined Treatment of Cinnamon Leaf Oil Emulsion Containing Cationic Surfactants and Ultrasound

  • Endive is widely consumed in a fresh-cut form owing to its rich nutritional content. However, fresh-cut vegetables are susceptible to contamination by pathogenic bacteria. This study investigated the antibacterial activities of the combined treatment of cinnamon leaf oil emulsion containing cetylpyridinium chloride or benzalkonium chloride (CLC and CLB, respectively) as a cationic surfactant and ultrasound (US) against Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 on endive. The combined treatment of CLC or CLB with US reduced the population of L. monocytogenes by 1.58 and 1.47 log colony forming units (CFU)/g, respectively, and that of E. coli O157:H7 by 1.60 and 1.46 log CFU/g, respectively, as compared with water washing treatment. The reduction levels of both pathogens were higher than those observed with 0.2 mg/ml sodium hypochlorite. In addition, the combined treatment showed no effect on the quality of the fresh-cut endive (FCE). In particular, the degree of browning in FCE was less for the treatment group than for the control and water washing treatment groups. Thus, cationic surfactant-based cinnamon leaf oil emulsions combined with US may be an effective washing treatment for the microbial safety of FCE.

  • Among the auxiliary sciences of history field in the KDC 5th edition, several classification system problems are found with the fields of Archaeology, Diplomatics, Archival Science, Genealogy, and Biography. The purpose of this study is to propose their improvements. To achieve this purpose, first, this study compared and analyzed the Auxiliary Sciences of History field of LCC, DDC, KDC, NDC, UDC, CLC. Second, this study investigated the actual conditions of KDC in the library field to diagnose several application problems. Finally, based on the findings, the improvements of KDC were suggested.

Hydrodynamic Properties of Interconnected Fluidized Bed Chemical-Looping Combustors (상호 연결된 유동층 매체 순환식 연소로의 수력학적 특성)

  • The chemical-looping combustion(CLC) has advantages of no energy loss for separation of $CO_2$ without $NO_x$ formation. This CLC system consists of oxidation and reduction reactors where metal oxides particles are circulating through these two reactors. In the present study, the reaction kinetic equations of iron oxide oxygen carriers supported on bentonite have been determined by the shrinking core model. Based on the reactivity data, design values of solid circulation rate and solids inventory were determined for the rector. Two types of interconnected fluidized bed systems were designed for CLC application, one system consists of a riser and a bubbling fluidized bed, and the other one has a riser and two bubbling fluidized beds. Solid circulation rates were varied to about $30kg/m^2s$ by aeration into a loop-seal. Solid circulation rate increases with increasing aeration velocity and it increases further with an auxiliary gas flow into the loop-seal. As solid circulation rate is increased, solid hold up in the riser increases. A typical gas leakage from the riser to the fluidized bed is found to be less than 1%.

  • 본 논문은 LLC 공진 컨버터를 이용한 고효율 슬림 아답터의 구조를 제안한다. 1차 측의 구리 권선과 2차 측을 그 외부에 PCB를 이용하는 새로운 구조의 슬림한 변압기가 제안되었다. 제안하는 구조는 쉬운 공정성과 넓은 도통 단면적을 가져 고효율의 슬림 컨버터에 적합하다. 또한 2차 측 권선의 간단한 구조를 위해 voltage-doubler 정류기와 출력 필터 사이즈를 줄이기 위해 CLC 필터가 사용되었다. 효과를 확인하기 위해 85W 컨버터를 제작하여 실험하였다.
