  • The adsorptive stripping voltammetric determination method of trace germanium (IV) using mercaptoacetic acid as a ligand was studied. Optimal conditions were found to be 0.25 M NaCl solution (pH 6.0) containing mercaptoacetic acid concentration of $5.0{\times}10^{-6}M$. The peak potential appeared at - 1.402 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Effects of sodium chloride concentration, mercaptoacetic acid concentration, and accumulation time for the complex of Ge(IV)-Mercaptoacetic acid on the peak current were studied. Amberlite IRC-718 chelating resin was applied to the separation of Ge(IV) from other metal ions.

  • The ability of inherently conducting polymer (ICP) coated textiles to recover gold metal from aqueous solutions containing $[AuCl_4]^-$ was investigated. Nylon-lycra, nylon, acrylic, polyester and cotton were coated with a layer of polypyrrole (PPy) doped with 1,5-naphthalenedisulfonic acid (NDSA), 2-anthraquinonesulfonic acid (AQSA) or p-toluenesulfonic acid (pTS). Textiles coated with polyaniline (PAn) doped with chloride were also used. The highest gold capacity was displayed by PPy/NDSA/nylon-lycra, which exhibited a capacity of 115 mgAu/g coated textile, or 9700 mgAu/g polymer. Varying the underlying textile substrate or the ICP coating had a major effect on the gold capacity of the composites. Several ICP coated textiles recovered more than 90 % of the gold initially present in solutions containing 10 ppm $[AuCl_4]^-$ and 0.1 M HCl in less than 1 min. Both PPy/NDSA/nylon-lycra and PAn/Cl/nylon-lycra recovered approximately 60 % of the gold and none of the iron present in a solution containing 1 ppm $[AuCl_4]^-$, 1000 ppm $Fe^{3+}$ and 0.1 M HCl. The spontaneous and sustained recovery of gold metal from aqueous solutions containing $[AuCl_4]^-$ using ICP coated textiles has good prospects as a potential future technology.

  • The single-stranded DNA binding activity of the Escherichia coli RecA protein is crucial for homologous recombination to occur. This and other biochemical activities of ssDNA binding proteins may be affected by various factors. In this study, we analyzed the effect of $CaCl_2$, NaCl and $NH_4NO_3$ salts in combination with the pH and nucleotide cofactor effect on the ssDNA-binding activity of RecA. The studies revealed that, in addition to the inhibitory effect, these salts exert also a stimulatory effect on RecA. These effects occur only under very strict conditions, and the presence or absence and the type of nucleotide cofactor play here a major role. It was observed that in contrast to ATP, ATP${\gamma}$S prevented the inhibitory effect of NaCl and $NH_4NO_3$, even at very high salt concentration. These results indicate that ATP${\gamma}$S most likely stabilizes the structure of RecA required for DNA binding, making it resistant to high salt concentrations.

  • Acid phosphatase in the radish young plant showed optimal activity at pH 5.5. The activity of acid phosphatase was maintained longer during the ABA (0.5 mM) treatment than those in control, whereas that was similar to the treatment of NaCl (0.5 mM). But during the cold (4$^{\circ}C$) treatment, the activity of acid phosphatase was decreased dramatically compared to the control, which was maintained almost on a constant level and increased gradually during 6 days. It showed that acid phosphatase was in relation to the change of biochemical reaction, which plants were coped with cold, NaCl and ABA stress.

  • Electrochemical behaviours on 1.0 mM methylviologen ($MV^{2+}$) in 100 mM NaCl+27 mM $MgCl_2$ solution, without and with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), were studied. The intersection of two lines on ${\Delta}E_p$ (the difference between the anodic, $E_{pa}$, and the cathodic, $E_{pc}$, peak potentials) of the first and second redox waves vs. -log[SDS] plot was determined as a critical micelle concentration (CMC). When $Mg^{2+}$ was added, the effective access of $MV{\cdot}^+$ to the glassy carbon electrode surface became possible and the formation of micelles was retarded.

  • $(1-x)BaTiO_3+(x)Cd_5(PO_4)_3Cl$ ceramics were prepared by the conventional ceramic technique, i.e., solid state reaction at high temperature. The concentration of $Cd_5(PO_4)_3C$ was varied from 0.01 to 0.15 mole fraction. In order to study the phase transitions of our ceramics, the Raman scattering spectra were measured as functions of concentration x and temperature. It was found that the soluble limit of $Cd_5(PO_4)_3Cl$ in $BaTiO_3$ was the x=0.05 composition and $BaTiO_3$ phase disappeared above x=0.10. A new phase identified as $Ba_4Ti_3P_2O_{15}$ was detected in all samples of our compositions. The Curie temperature shifts up to $130^{\circ}C$ as the concentration x increases from zero to 0.05 and shift down to $95^{\circ}C$ as further increases to 0.08. For the increase of the Curie temperature, it is suggested that it can result from the inhibition of displacement of $Ti^{4+}$ in the distorted octahedron due to well dispersed $Ba_4Ti_3P_2O_{15}$ and $Cd_5(PO_4)_3Cl$ phase.

  • In the present study, denting corrosion experiments were performed as a function of crevice gap size (50, 100 and 200 ${\mu}m$) in a solution containing 3,500 ppm NaCl + 0.2 M $CuCl_2$ (pH = 3 adjusted by HCl). The effects of chloride ion concentrations (3, 3,500 and 35,000 ppm as NaCl) were also outlined with two different crevice gap sizes (100, 200 ${\mu}m$). In addition, the effect of NiB on the denting corrosion was also investigated in a solution of 35,000 ppm NaCl + 0.2 M $CuCl_2$ (pH = 3 adjusted by HCl). The results showed that denting rate increased with the increasing crevice gap size at an initial stage and became nearly constant afterwards. As the concentration of chloride ion increased, the denting rate also increased. However, the addition of a NiB powder of 4 g/L in to the acid-chloride solution was observed to suppress the denting rate significantly.

  • Nitric oxide (NO) is a diffusible, multifunctional and transcellular messenger that has been implicated in numerous physiological and pathological conditions. It has been reported that NO induced apoptosis in tumor cells, macrophage cells and inhibited apoptosis in normal cells, endothelial cells. To examine whether NO could induce apoptosis in MCF-7 cells, cells were treated with SIN-1 (3-morpholinosydnonimine), NO donor. Cell viability did not change in SIN-1 treated cells for 48 h and there was no significantly changes in cell cycle progression or growth pattern by FACS analysis. But p53 protein, an apoptosis-related factor, increased SIN-1 treatment time dependently. Bcl-2, MDM2 and p21 were also accumulated. Bax level did not change. A major role of inhibiting apoptosis by NO in MCF-7 cells, cobalt chloride ($CoCl_2$) was added to cells preincubated with SIN-1. Whereas $CoCl_2$ treated cells underwent apoptosis, for 24 h SIN-1 preincubated cells were not induced apoptosis. Inactivated proteins, MDM2 and bcl-2, by $CoCl_2$ levels also increased in SIN-1 pre-treated cells. These results suggested that SIN-1 blocked p53 by MDM2 activation and inhibited apoptosis by inducing p21 and bcl-2 expression.

  • Increase in water vapor barrier properties of sodium alginate films was studied by preparing composite films with fatty acids, i.e., lauric, palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids, and by treatment with 3% $CaCl_{2}$ solution for 3 min. Film thickness, surface color, microstructure, tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (E), water vapor permeability (WVP), water solubility (WS), and sorption isotherm of films were investigated. Microstructure of films observed with SEM was changed by fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$ treatments. TS decreased 25-70% depending on fatty acid used, and increased 1.5- to 2-fold by $CaCl_{2}$ treatment. E decreased by both fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$ treatments. Except oleic acid, WVP decreased significantly (p<0.05) by forming composite films with fatty acids, particularly with stearic acid, WVP decreased more than two-fold. WS also decreased by fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$ treatments. In stearic acid, WS decreased about 30-fold by combined treatment of fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$. Sorption isotherm showed typical biphasic pattern with deliquescent point of 0.75. Results of isotherms and BET monolayer moisture content indicated hydrophilicity of film decreased by $CaCl_{2}$ treatment.

  • Effect of water temperature, salt and $MgCl_2$ concentration on sand ejection characteristics of short neck clam, Luditapes philippinarum was investigated. Unlike other shell fish such as red shell, arkshell and surf clam, treatment of short neck clam with sea water was evaluated not effective as sand ejection conditions. Sand ejection activity of short neck clam was shown effective at $2.5\%$ NaCl (pH 8.0) at $25^{\circ}C$. This activity was enhanced about 1.57 times when 50 mM $MgCl_2$ were added to the above mentioned conditions. But the extent of sand ejection activity was shown higher in the order of sea water $(3.2\%\;salt)+20mM\;MgCl_2$, sea water $(3.2\%\;salt),\;2.5\%\;NaCl+50mM\;MgCl_2$, treatments. Therefore, it was suggested that habitat conditions and Mg ions could be responsible for biological activity and concominant sand ejection of short neck clam.
