  • The F2-layer critical frequency (foF2) data from several ionosondes are employed to study the long-distance effect of the M8.8 Chile Earthquake of February 27, 2010, on the F2 layer. Significant perturbations of the peak F2-layer electron density have been observed following the earthquake at two South African stations, Hermanus and Madimbo, which are located at great circle distances of ~8,000 and ~10,000 km from the earthquake epicenter, respectively. Simplified estimates demonstrate that the observed ionospheric perturbations can be caused by a long-period acoustic gravity wave produced in the F-region by the earthquake.

  • An inhomogeneous and anisotropic rock has different properties at different location. Thus, this refers to any of the properties which we may be measuring. There are two concepts of rock mass, namely, CHILE(Continuous, Homogeneous, Isotropic, Linear Elastic) material and DIANE(Discontinuous, Inhomogeneous, Anisotropic, Non-linear Elastic) rock. The former is essentially the properties of intact rock, the latter is essentially the properties governed by the structure of rock. In geotechnical aspect, the most important parameter is strength of rock or rock mass. In particular, characteristics of strength of rock mass depend upon the orientation of discontinuities And this orientation of discontinuities has different properties at different direction of excavation. Therefore, it needs for characterization of different properties of discontinuity orientation against different direction of excavation.

  • As of July 24th 208, Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has entered into a formal partnership with the Gemini Observatory. The Gemini Observatory has been operated by Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) on behalf of the International Partnership that includes Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, United States, and Korea as the new partner country. Effective from the 209A Call for Proposals (CfP), any researchers affiliated with Korean institutes are eligible to apply for various observing opportunities in both hemispheres covered by Gemini North in Hawaii and by Gemini South in Chile. We are going to share the importance and long-term perspectives of the KASI-Gemini Partnership in the context of the next decade of Korean optical astronomy researches.

  • A newfangled family of Nyquist-I pulses is proposed and named improved dual sinc pulse (IDSP). The IDSP is designed to improve performance in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based systems. The IDSP is a generalization of the dual sinc pulse (DSPP). This is because the DSP was formulated for α = 1 whereas the IDSPP is valid for 0 ≤ α ≤ 1. The behavior of the IDSP is promising in terms of its frequency and time domain responses. Theoretical and numerical outcomes indicate that the IDSP outperformed other existing pulses applied in OFDM-based systems for various key evaluation metrics.
