CHF (Critical heat flux) on the external surface of the reactor vessel lower head is major key in the evaluation on the feasibility of IVR-EVC (In-Vessel Retention through External Vessel Cooling) concept. To identify the CHF on the external surface, considerable works have been performed. Through the review on the previous works related to the CHF on the external surface, liquid subcooling, induced flow along the external surface, ICI (In-Core Instrument) nozzle and minimum gap are identified as major parameters. According to the present analysis, the effects of the ICI nozzle and minimum gap on CHF are pronounced at the upstream of test vessel: on the other hand, the induced flow considerably affects the CHF at downstream of test vessel. In addition, the subcooling effect is shown at all of test vessel, and decreases with the increase in the elevation of test vessel. In the real application of the IVR-EVC concept, vertical position is known as a limiting position, at which thermal margin is the minimum. So, it is very important to precisely predict the CHF at vertical position in a viewpoint of gaining more thermal margins. However, the effects of the liquid subcooling and induced flow do not seem to be adequately included in the CHF correlations suggested by previous works, especially at the downstream positions.

The subchannel of a research reactor used to generate high power density is designed to be narrow and rectangular and comprises plate-type fuels operating under downward flow conditions. Critical heat flux (CHF) is a crucial parameter for estimating the safety of a nuclear fuel; hence, this parameter should be accurately predicted. Here, machine learning is applied for the prediction of CHF in a narrow rectangular channel. Although machine learning can effectively analyze large amounts of complex data, its application to CHF, particularly for narrow rectangular channels, remains challenging because of the limited flow conditions available in existing experimental databases. To resolve this problem, we used four CHF correlations to generate pseudo-data for training an artificial neural network. We also propose a network architecture that includes pre-training and prediction stages to predict and analyze the CHF. The trained neural network predicted the CHF with an average error of 3.65% and a root-mean-square error of 17.17% for the test pseudo-data; the respective errors of 0.9% and 26.4% for the experimental data were not considered during training. Finally, machine learning was applied to quantitatively investigate the parametric effect on the CHF in narrow rectangular channels under downward flow conditions.
In-vessel corium retention (IVR) during external reactor vessel cooling (ERVC) is a key severe accident management strategy adopted in advanced nuclear power plants. The injection of nanofluids has been regarded as a means of enhancing CHF when using the IVR-ERVC strategy to safeguard high-power nuclear reactors. However, a critical practical concern is that various types of debris flowing from the contaminant sump during operation of an ERVC system might degrade CHF enhancement by nanofluids. Our objective here was to experimentally assess the viability of nanofluid use to enhance CHF in practical ERVC contexts (e.g., when fluids contain various types of debris). The types and characteristics of debris expected during IVR-ERVC were examined. We performed pool boiling CHF experiments using nanofluids containing these types of debris. Notably, we found that debris did not cause any degradation of the CHF enhancement characteristics of nanofluids. The nanoparticles are approximately 1000-fold smaller than the debris particles; the number of nanoparticles in the same volume fraction is 1 billion-fold greater. Nanofluids increase CHF via porous deposition of nanosized particles on the boiling surface; this is not hindered by extremely large debris particles.

A boiling heat transfer system is used in a variety of industrial processes and applications, such as refrigeration, power generation, heat exchangers, cooling of high-power electronics components, and cooling of nuclear reactors. The critical heat flux (CHF) is the thermal limit during a boiling heat transfer phase change; at the CHF point, the heat transfer is maximized, followed by a drastic degradation beyond the CHF point. Therefore, Enhancement of CHF is essential for economy and safety of heat transfer system. In this study, the CHF and heat transfer coefficient under the pool-boiling state were tested using multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) CM-95 and CM-100. These two types of multi-wall carbon nanotubes have different sizes but the same thermal conductivity. The results showed that the highest CHF increased for both MWCNTs CM-95 and CM-100 at the volume fraction of 0.001%, and that the CHF-increase ratio for MWCNT CM-100 nanofluid with long particles was higher than that for MWCNT CM-95 nanofluid with short particles. Also, at the volume fraction of 0.001%, the MWCNT CM-100 nanofluid indicated a 5.5% higher CHF-increase ratio as well as an approximately 23.87% higher heat-transfer coefficient increase ratio compared with the MWCNT CM-95 nanofluid.

In the boiling heat transfer mechanism, CHF(critical heat flux) is the significantly important parameter of the system. So, many researchers have been struggling to enhance the CHF of the system in enormous methods. Recently, there were lots of researches about enormous CHF enhancement with the nanofluids. In that, the pool boiling CHF in nanofluids has the significantly increased value compared to that in pure water because of the deposition of the nanoparticle on the heater surface in the nanofluids. The aim of this study is the comparison of the effect of the nanoparticle deposited surface and the modified surface which has the similar morphology and made by MEMS fabrication. The nanoparticle deposited surface has the complex structures in nano-micro scale. Therefore, we fabricated the surfaces which has the similar wettability and coated with the micro size post and nano structure. The experiment is performed in 3 cases : the bare surface with 0.002% water-ZnO nanofluids, the nanoparticle deposited surface with pure water and the new fabricated surface with pure water. The contact angle, a representative parameter of the wettability, of the all 3 cases has the similar value about 0 and the SEM(scanning electron microscope) images of the surfaces show the complex nano-micro structure. From the pool boiling experiment of the each case, the nanoparticle deposited surface with pure water and the fabricated surface with pure water has the almost same CHF value. In other words, the CHF enhancement of the nanoparticle deposited surface is the surface effect. It also shows that the new fabricated surface follows the nanoparticle deposited surface well.
A simultaneous visualization of the behavior of bubbles and dry spots has been carried out for pool boiling of R-1l3 on a horizontal heater. From video imaging and image processing analysis, the formation of bubbles and dry spots occurs simultaneously, and therefore they should be considered as a synchronized concept rather than independent identities. The dry spot density is equivalent to the active site density in the region before CHF. At CHF point, large dry areas due to the coalescence of neighboring dry areas cover the heater surface.
An improved mechanistic model was developed to predict a convective boiling critical heat flux (CHF) in the vertical round tubes with uniform heat fluxes. The CHF formula for subcooled and low quality boiling was derived from the local conservation equations of mass, energy and momentum, together with appropriate constitutive relations. The model is characterized by the momentum balance equation to determine the limiting transverse interchange of mass flux crossing the interface of wall bubbly layer and core by taking account of the convective shear effect due to the frictional drag on the wall-attached bubbles. Comparison between the present model predictions and experimental CHF data from several sources shows good agreement over a wide range of How conditions. The present model shows comparable prediction accuracy with the CHF look-up table of Groeneveld et al. Also the model correctly accounts for the effects of flow variables as well as geometry parameters.

To find the effects of pressure on critical heat flux (CHF) for the conditions of low pressures (especially up to 10 bar) and low mass flux (~300 kg/$m^2$s), a series of experiments have been accomplished by using uniformly heated Inconel-625 tube. The experimental ranges are as follows: pressure (from 1.2 to 8 bar). mass velocities (from 100 to 250 kg/$m^2$s) and the inlet subcooling ($\Delta$h$_{i}$ = 350 kJ/kg). According to the experimental data, it is found that the CHF is nearly independent of the pressure and increases with mass flux. From the results of the CHF correlation assessment for this experimental data, we could find somewhat different tendency of CHF behavior from every other CHF prediction correlation and table.ation and table.
Si surfaces exposed to CHF3/C2F6 gas plasmas ih reactive ion etching (RIE) have been characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). CHF3/C2F6 gas plasma exposure of Si surface leads to the deposition of residual film containing carbon and fluorine. The narrow scan spectra of C 1s show various bonding states of carbon as C-Si, C-F/H, C-CFx(x $\leq$ 3), C-F, C-F2, and C-F3. The chemical bonding states of fluorine are described with F-Si, F-C and F-O. And the oxygen and silicon are also detected. The effects of parameters for reactive ion etching as CHF3/C2F6 gas ratio, RF power, and pressure are investigated.
A mechanistic model based on wall-attached bubble coalescence, previously developed by the authors, was extended to predict a vow high critical heat flux (CHF)in highly subcooled flow boiling, especially for high mass flux and small tube diameter conditions. In order to take into account the enhanced condensation due to high subcooling and high mass velocity in small diameter tubes, a mechanistic approach was adopted to evaluate the non-equilibrium flow quality and void fraction in the subcooled water flow boiling, with preserving the structure of the previous CHF model. Comparison of the model predictions against highly subcooled water CHF data showed relatively good agreement over a wide range of parameters. The significance of the proposed CHF model lies in its generality in applying over the entire subcooled flow boiling regime including the operating conditions of fission and fusion reactors.
