  • Long-term properties of concrete affect structures in many respects, not excepting dynamic behaviors. This paper investigates the influence of concrete creep on the dynamic behaviors of concrete filled steel tube (CFT) arch bridges, by means of combining the analytical method for the creep of axially compressed CFT members, which is based on Model B3 for concrete creep, with the finite element model of CFT arch bridges. By this approach, the changes of the stress and strain of each element in the bridge with time can be obtained and then transformed into damping and stiffness matrices in the dynamic equation involved in the finite element model at different times. A numerical example of a long-span half-through CFT arch bridge shows that creep influences the natural vibration characteristics and seismic responses of the bridge considerably, especially in the early age. In addition, parameter analysis demonstrates that concrete composition, compressive strength and steel ratio have an obvious effect on the seismic response of the CFT arch bridge.

  • The CFT(Concrete Filled Tube) system has been developed to behave well in a structural performance such as stiffness, stress, ductility, fire resistance that is derived from its mechanical advantages of composite structure. There were number of studies about unprotected CFT columns for improving their fire resistance through reinforcing bars or plates being placed inside the steel tube. It was also known that reinforcing plates of flat type need stiffeners in a certain distance to avoid their buckling failure so it cost as much as their using consequentially. This paper is planned to test the work of beam elements attached inner side of CFT depending on its shape. More discussions on beam's design could be followed after some fire tests accordingly conducted within this project.

  • The results of a numerical investigation pertaining to the hysteretic behaviour of concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) column to I-beam connections are discussed in detail. Following the verification of the numerical results against the available experimental tests, the nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis was implemented to evaluate the effects of different parameters including the column axial load, beam lateral support, shape and arrangement of stiffeners, stiffness of T-stiffeners, and the number of shear stiffeners. Pursuing this objective, an external CFT column to beam connection, tested previously, was selected as the case-study. The lateral forces on the structure were simulated, albeit approximately, using an incremental cyclic loading reversal applied at the beam tip. The results were compared in terms of hysteretic load-displacement curves, stress distributions in connection, strength, rotation, and energy dissipation capacity. It was shown that external T-stiffeners combined with internal shear stiffeners play an important role in the hysteretic performance of CFT columns to I-beam connections.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the yield stress of SM570TMC CFT column subject to axial force. These columns were evaluated and compared by statistical tests, during which the displacements and axial loads of column specimens were measured. Test results showed that the yield stress of CFT columns under axial load could be predicted using the previously proposed the yield stress of steel columns.

  • In this study, the fire resistance performance of the concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) columns and thin steel-plate composite (TSC) beams installed at a 20-story office building were designed using a performance-based structural fire design. Because of the lack of any specific provisions in the building code and guidelines for structural engineers about the performance-based approach, the only prescriptive approach has been selected for designing fire-resistant structures in Korea. To evaluate the fire resistance performance of the CFT columns and TSC beams, finite element analysis verified by the experimental results studied by several researchers was conducted with ABAQUS. From the fire scenario, the temperature distributions of the CFT columns and TSC beams were found via finite element analysis and the behaviors of the CFT columns and TSC beams were investigated in the structural field based on the temperature distribution.

  • The concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) columns have several benefits of high load-bearing capacity, inherent ductility and toughness because of the confinement effect of the steel tube on concrete and the restraining effect of the concrete on local buckling of steel tube. However, the experimental research into the behavior of square CFT columns consisting of high-strength steel and high-strength concrete is limited. Six full scale CFT specimens were tested under flexural moment. The CFT columns consisted of high-strength steel tubes ($f_y$ = 325 MPa, 555 MPa, 900 MPa) and high-strength concrete ($f_{ck}$ = 80 MPa and 120 MPa). The ultimate capacity of high strength square CFT columns was compared with AISC-LRFD design code. Also, this study was focused on investigating the effect of high-strength materials on the structural behavior and the mathematical models of the steel tube and concrete. Nonlinear fiber element analyses were conducted based on the material model considering the cyclic bending behavior of high-strength CFT members. The results obtained from the numerical analyses were compared with the experimental results. It was found that the numerical analysis results agree well with the experimental results.

  • This paper presents an experimental study and its findings of the behavior of circular and square stub columns filled with high strength concrete ($f_c^{\prime}$=49MPa) and polymer cement concrete (PCC) under concentric compressive load. Twenty-four specimens were tested to investigate the effects of variations in the tube shape (circular, square), wall thickness, and concrete type on the axial strength of stub columns. The characteristics of CFT stub columns filled with two types of concrete were investigated in order to collect the basic design data for using the PCC for the CFT columns. The experimental investigations included consideration of the effects of the concrete fill on the failure mode, ultimate strength, initial stiffness and deformation capacity. One of the key findings of this study was that circular section members filled with PCC retain their structural resistance without reduction far beyond the ultimate capacity. The results presented in this paper will provide experimental data to aid in the development of design procedures for the use of advanced concretes in CFT columns. Additionally, these results give structural designers invaluable insight into the realistic behavior of CFT columns.

  • Concrete filled tubular(CFT) members have many structural and constructional advantages. The prefabrication of CFT members can be thought an idea for the good qualify control of concrete. The objective of this study is to suggest the construction method of prefab CFT beam-columns. Tests are performed to understand their structural behaviors. The opening space between prefab CFT members and the size of tubular members are the parameters of this study. The results of this study will be based on the suggestion of prefab CFT.

  • In this study, circular sectional concrete-filled tube(CFT) column-to-foundation connections were numerically investigated in order to improve their structural details. A inner reinforced specimen with high-tension bolts and inner deformed bars was adopted from a previous experimental study to make the numerical model. The validity of the numerical method was verified through comparing the experimental results with the analysis's ones. In order to optimize design variables about the inner reinforced model, a number of numerical analyses were conducted for various variables. Finally, this study suggested the optimum variables about the reinforced circular sectional CFT column-to-foundation connections.

Recently, CFT structure has been focussed on a structural system for a high-rise buildings. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a strength and deformation capacity of CFT square columns subjected to constant axial and cyclic lateral load. The test parameters are diameters to thickness ratio of steel tube, axial load ratios, concrete strengths, load applying types and whether or not filled concrete. Total sixteen specimens are fabricated to clarify the energy absorbtion capacity of CFT columns. Experimental results are summarized for maximum strength, initial stiffness and deformation capacity.
