  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the numerical simulation accuracy according to the CFRP modeling method in the CFRP-Al alloy SPR (Self-Piercing Rivet) joint process. The mechanical properties of the CFRP, aluminum sheet are precisely obtained from the tensile test according to the loading direction. Additionally, the hardening curve of rivet was calculated from the inverse analysis of the machined rivet-ring compression test. For the CFRP-Al alloy SPR simulation, two kinds of the CFRP modeling methods were established based on the continuum and layer-by-layer approaches. The simulation results showed that the CFRP layer-by-layer modeling method can provide more reliable prediction shape of the fractured sheets and deformed rivet. This simulation technique can be used in evaluating the CFRP-Metal SPR performance and designing the SPR process conditions.

  • Presented are the results of recent tests on diagonal shear failure of reinforced concrete beams which are externally reinforced in the transverse direction by a unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced polymer, instead of the traditional steel stirrups. Three different series of the beams with different shear reinforcements, i.e. U-wrapping with carbon sheet, U-wrapping with carbon strips and full wrapping with carbon strips were tested. Those beams were geometrically similar, and the size range is 1:1.9:4. The failure of the beams are characterized by delamination, crushing of concrete and distributed shear cracks. It is found that the size effect is much weaker than that of the reference beams without CFRP. Therefore CFRP sheet may be used as the transverse reinforcement with a minor size effect. However, it is not clear that the same conclusion can be drawn in other sizes. Further researches are recommended.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of behacior of slender square hollow section columns strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) sheets subjected to concentrated axial loading. Three long specimens were fabricated and one stub column were fabricated. The main parameters were the number of CFRP layers. From the tests, it was observed that global buckling were occurred at the center of specimen for unretrofitting slender column. However, CFRP retrofitting could prevent the global buckling of slender column. Maximum increase of 22% was also achieved in axial-load capacity with three longitudinal layered CFRP applied on four sides of steel tubes.

  • In this study, one type of circular shaped composite tube was used, combined with reinforcing foam and without foam. Furthermore, CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) circular member manufactured from CFRP prepreg sheet for lightweight design. CFRP is an anisotropic material which is the most widely adapted lightweight structural member. The crashworthy behavior of circular composite material tubes subjected to static axial compression under same conditions is reported in this paper. Test was executed in order to compare the results to the energy absorption and collapse shape. The collapse mode during the failure process were observed and analyzed. The behavior of polymeric foams to the tubes crashworthiness were also investigated. According to the experimental results, specimens filled with foam are higher total energy absorption than the other specimens not filled with the foam.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of axially loaded stub columns of slender steel hollow square section (SHS) strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) sheets. 9 specimens were fabricated and the main parameters were: width-thickness ratio (b/t), the number of CFRP ply, and the CFRP sheet orientation. From the tests, it was observed that two sides would typically buckle outward and the other two sides would buckle inward. A maximum increase of 33% was achieved in axial-load capacity when 3 layers of CFRP were used to wrap HSS columns of b/t = 100 transversely. Also, stiffness and ductility index (DI) were compared between un-retrofitted specimens and retrofitted specimens. Finally, it was shown that the application of CFRP to slender sections delays local buckling and subsequently results in significant increases in elastic buckling stress. In the last section, a prediction formula of the ultimate strength developed using the experimental results is presented.

  • Strengthening by bonded CFRP sheet/plate onto the surface has been generally used for the R.C. beams. The strengthening efficiency of this system depends on the performance of the adhesive interlace between the beam and the CFRP, and the interlace often causes unexpected failure. In this paper, an unbonding system is proposed with prestressed CFRP. Finite element analysis has been conducted using DIANA for the R.C. beams strengthened by prestressing the unbonded CFRP plate. The results of analysis were compared with those of experiment.

  • An experimental and a non linear finite element investigation on the behavior of steel-concrete composite beams stiffened in hogging moment region with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) sheets is presented in this paper. A total of five specimens were tested under two-point loads. Three of the composite beams included concrete slab while the other two beams had composite slabs. The stiffening was achieved by attaching CFRP sheets to the concrete surface at the position of negative bending moment. The suggested CFRP sheets arrangement enhanced the overall beam behavior and increased the composite beam capacity. Valuable parametric study was conducted using a three dimensional finite element model using ANSYS program. Both geometrical and material nonlinearity were included. The studied parameters included CFRP sheet arrangement, concrete strength and degree of shear connection.

  • It is generally reported that most of RC beams strengthened with simply bonded FRP composite is failed by FRP debonding. Also, the flexural performance of RC member strengthened with FRP composite can be calculated using the effective strain of FRP. The effective strain as a result of the debonding failure depends on many variables, such as FRP stiffness including the thickness($t_f$) and modulus of elasticity($E_f$), the amount of FRP but the FRP stiffness is reportedly the most influential. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to examine effects of FRP stiffness on the flexural strengthening of RC beams. 4 different stiffness of CFRP composite including CFRP sheet and laminae were selected. From the tests, it was found that the flexural performance of RC beams strengthened with CFRP composite can be calculated based on the effective strain of the CFRP composite and the effective strain is inversely proportional to the CFRP stiffness.

  • To evaluate the bonding performance of reinforced glulam, the textile type of glass fiber and aramid fiber, and the sheet type of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) were used as reinforcements. The reinforced glulam was manufactured by inserting reinforcement between the outmost and middle lamination of 5ply glulam. The types of adhesives used in this study were polyvinyl acetate resins (MPU500H, and MPU600H), polyurethane resin and resorcinol resin. The block shear strengths of the textile type in glass fiber reinforced glulam using MPU500H and resorcinol resin were higher than 7.1 N/$mm^2$, and these glulams passed the wood failure requirement of Korean standards (KS). In case of the sheet types, GFRP reinforced glulams using MPU500H, polyurethane resin and resorcinol resin, and CFRP reinforced glulams using MPU500H and polyurethane resin passed the requirement of KS. The textile type of glass fiber reinforced glulam using resorcinol resin after water and boiling water soaking passed the delamination requirement of KS. The only GFRP reinforced glulam using MPU500H after water soaking passed the delamination requirement of KS. We conclude that the bonding properties of adhesive according to reinforcements are one of the prime factors to determine the bonding performance of the reinforced glulam.

  • For strengthening deteriorated concrete structures, externally bonded FRP sheets or plates using epoxy resins are widely used. For the external FRP composites to be effective in improving the performance of the structure, bond between FRP composites and concrete is required. In general, the most frequently observed failure mode in FRP strengthened concrete structures is debonding failure at the interfacial section between FRP and concrete. Therefore, it is very important to find out the interfacial behavior properties. This paper presents experimental results of the relationship of concrete and FRP sheet for some conditions including concrete compressive strength, concrete surface preparation to observe the bond behavior between concrete and FRP sheet and various anchorage types to increase the bond capacity of FRP sheet.
