This paper deals with a comparative study among three different rehabilitation techniques, namely, (i) carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP), (ii) glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) and (iii) ferrocement on the flexural strengthening of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) beams. As these different techniques have to be compared on a level playing field, tensile coupon tests have been carried out initially for GFRP, CFRP and ferrocement and the number of layers required in each of these composites in terms of the tensile strength. It was found that for the selected constituents of the composites, one layer of CFRP was equivalent to three layers of GFRP and five layers of wiremesh reinforcement in ferrocement. Rehabilitation of RCC beams using these equivalent laminates shows that all the three composites performed in a similar way and are comparable. The parameters selected in this study were (i) the strengthening material and (ii) the level of pre-distress induced to the beams prior to the rehabilitation. It was noticed that, as the levels of pre-distress decreases, the percentage attainment of flexural capacity and flexural stiffness of the rehabilitated beams increases for all the three selected composites used for rehabilitation. Load-deflection behavior, failure modes, energy absorption capacity, displacement ductility and curvature ductility were compared among these composites and at different distress levels for each composite. The results indicate that ferrocement showed a better performance in terms of ductility than other FRPs, and between the FRPs, GFRP exhibited a better ductility than the CFRP counterpart.
Hybrid laminated Al/carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites are attracting considerable attention from industries such as aerospace and automobiles owing to their excellent specific strength and specific rigidity. However, when this material is used to fabricate high-pressure fuel storage containers subjected to repeated fatigue loads, fatigue life evaluation for the working load is regulated as an important criterion for operational safety and ease of maintenance. Among the existing evaluation methods for these vessels, the burst test and the hydraulic repeat test require expensive facilities. Thus, the present study aims to develop an improved fatigue life test for Al/CFRP laminated hybrid composites. The test specimen was manufactured using a curved mold considering the shape of a type III high-pressure storage container. The strain-life method was used for fatigue life evaluation, and the life was predicted based on the transition life. The results indicate that the more complex the CFRP stacking sequence, the longer is the transition life. This test method is expected to be useful for ensuring the fatigue safety and economy of hybrid laminate composites.
In order to increase the load carrying capacity and/or increase the service life of existing circular reinforced concrete bridge columns, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites could be utilized. Transverse wrapping of circular concrete columns with CFRP sheets increases its axial and shear strengths. In addition, it provides good confinement to the concrete column core, which enhances the bending and compressive strength, as well as, ductility. Several experimental and analytical studies have been conducted on CFRP strengthened concrete cylinders/columns. However, there seem to be lack of thorough investigation of the effect of elevated temperatures on the response of CFRP strengthened circular concrete columns. A concrete confinement model that reflects the effects of elevated temperature on the mechanical properties of CFRP composites, and the efficiency of CFRP in strengthened concrete columns is presented. Tensile strength and modulus of CFRP under hot conditions and their effects on the concrete confinement are the primary parameters that were investigated. A modified concrete confinement model is developed and presented.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of the specimen geometries on the pin bearing strength of the angle ply carbon fiber reinforced composites. The effect of the edge distance and the specimen width on the pin bearing strength of angle ply CFRP composites are experimentally investigated in this paper. As results, the failure mode and pin bearing strength of mechanical joints turned out to depends on the stacking sequence and specimen geometries such as the edge distance and the specimen width. The higher pin bearing strength obtained for the angle ply CFRP composites is attributed to a combination of debonding, pull out, buckling and breakage of fiber and also the matrix cracking.
The mechanical properties of nano composites were evaluated for structural performance in order to enhance their applicability to the car and machine industrial fields. Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) and GFRP were manufactured by vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process with good mechanical properties. Tensile test was conducted to obtain the process factor of each composite. Also, carbon nano fiber (CNF) was dispersed in the composites and the relationship between the mechanical property and the CNF fraction was compared. The tensile strength and stiffness of 0/90 laminated CFRP were the best. CFRP/CNF (0.5 wt.%) was confirmed to be an excellent material for its elasticity and tensile strength.
The Fatigue characteristics of 8-harness satin woven CFRP composites with a circular hole are experimentally investigated under constant amplitude tension-tension loading. It is found in this study that the fatigue damage accumulation behavior is very random and history-independent, and the fatigue cumulative damage is linearly related with the mean number of cycles to a specified damage state. From these results, it is known that the fatigue characteristics of CFRP composites satisfy the basic assumptions of Markov chain theory and the parameter of Markov chain model can be determined only by mean and variance of fatigue lives. The predicted distribution of the fatigue cumulative damage using Markov chain model shows a good agreement with the test results. For the fatigue life distribution, Markov chain model makes similar accuracy to 2-parameter Weibull distribution function.
Many studies have dealt with strengthening by epoxy-bonded CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) composites. However, the effects of various influencing factors have not been clarified on the behavior of strengthened RC beams. This study was performed to verify the effects of strengthening due to various bond details of externally attached CFRP Composites. In this study, major test parameters include the bond type and the anchor type. The deflections, failure load, strain of reinforcing bar, concrete and CFRP are measured at each loading step. The failure mode and debonding loads(ultimate loads) are analysed from these measured data. According to the test results, all specimens are failed by intermediate flexural crack induced interfacial debonding.

A nondestructive technique would be very useful. Advanced NDE T-ray (terahertz ray) techniques of technology and instrumentation has provided a probing field on the electromagnetic spectrum. However, the T-ray is limited in order to penetrate a conducting material to some degree. Here, the T-ray would not go through easily the CFRP composite laminates since carbon fibers are electrically conducting while the epoxy matrix is not. So, investigation of terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz TDS) was made and reflection and transmission configurations were studied for a 48-ply thermoplastic PPS(poly-phenylene sulfide)-based CFRP solid laminate. It is found that the electrical conductivity of CFRP composites depends on the direction of unidirectional fibers.
Currently, CFRP composites are rapidly replacing steel plates, as they are lighter, stronger, and more elastic; however, they are poorly suited to hygrothermal and impact-collapsed environments because moisture can alter their molecule arrangement and chemical properties. In this study, environments are experimentally simulated in order to investigate changes in the moisture absorption inside a CFRP composite and to determine its weakest point. Moreover, changes in the moisture absorption ratio at temperatures of $60^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$ are studied and compared in order to understand how changes in temperature affect moisture absorption inside CFRP composites. Results show that moisture absorption leads to a strength reduction of around 50%. In addition, the moisture absorption rate inside CFRP composites is shown to change rapidly with increasing temperature. Accordingly, it showed that the change in matrix also has a weak point.

Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools possessing high hardness and abrasive wear resistance are particularly suited for drilling of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites, where tool life and consistent hole quality are important. While PCD presents superior performance when drilling CFRP, it is unclear how it performs when drilling multi-stack materials such as CFRP-titanium (Ti) stacks. This comparative study aims to investigate drilling of a Ti plate stacked on a CFRP panel when using PCD tools. The first sequence of the drilling experiments was to drill 20 holes in CFRP only. CFRP-Ti stacks were then drilled for the next 20 holes with the same drill bit. CFRP holes and CFRP-Ti stack holes were evaluated in terms of machined hole quality. The main tool wear mechanism of PCD drills is micro-fractures that occur when machining the Ti plate of the stack. Tool wear increases the instability and the operation temperature when machining the Ti plate. This results in high drilling forces, large hole diameter errors, high surface roughness, wider CFRP exit thermal damage, and taller exit Ti burrs.
