In this paper, a progressive failure analysis method was developed using the Hashin failure criterion and crack band model. Using the failure criterion, the failure initiation was evaluated. If the failure initiation is occurred, the damage variables at each failure modes (fiber tension & compression, matrix tension & compression) was calculated according to linear softening degradation behavior and the variables are used to derive the damaged stiffness matrix. The damaged stiffness matrix is reflected to damaged material and the progressive failure analysis is continued until the damage variables to be 1 that complete failure of material. A series of processes were performed using FE commercial code ABAQUS with user defined material subroutine (UMAT). To evaluate the proposed progressive failure model, the experimental results of open hole composite laminate tests was compared with numerical result. Using digital image correlation system, the strain behavior also was compared. The proposed numerical results were coincided well with the experimental results.
The interfacial properties in carbon fiber composites, which control the overall mechanical properties of the composites, are very important. Effective interface enhancement work is conducted on the modification of the carbon fiber surface with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Nonetheless, most surface modifications methods do have their own drawbacks such as high temperatures with a range of 600~1000℃, which should be implemented for CNT growth on carbon fibers that can cause carbon fiber damages affecting deterioration of composites properties. This study includes the use of in-situ interfacial polymerization of polyamide 610/CNT to fabricate the carbon fiber composites. The process is very fast and continuous and can disperse CNTs with random orientation in the interface resulting in enhanced interfacial properties. Scanning electron microscopy was conducted to investigate the CNT dispersion and composites morphology, and the thermal stability of the composites was analyzed via thermogravimetric analysis. In addition, fiber pull-out tests were used to assess interfacial strength between fiber and matrix.

This paper is a study to improve the fire-resistance capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) members strengthened by fiber-reinforced-polymer (FRP). The fire resistance of the RC members strengthened by FRP was evaluated through high temperature exposure test. In order to improve the fire resistance of the FRP reinforcing method, a fire-proof board was attached to the reinforced FRP surface and then the high temperature exposure test was carried out to evaluate the improvement of the fire resistance performance. It was confirmed that the resistance to high temperature of NSMR could be improved somewhat compared with that of EBR from the experiment that exposed to high temperature under the load corresponding to 40% of nominal strength. When 30 mm thick fire-resistance (FR) board is attached to the FRP surface, the surface of the reinforced FRP does not reach $65^{\circ}C$, which is the glass transition temperature (GTT) of the epoxy until the external temperature reaches $480^{\circ}C$. In particular, when a high performance fire-proof mortar was first applied prior to FR board attachment, the FRP portion did not reach the epoxy glass transition temperature until the external temperature reached $600^{\circ}C$.

Recently, research attention has been focused on vibration-free vehicles to transport small numbers of expensive electronic products. Vibration-free vehicles can be used to transport expensive test equipment or semiconductors, mainly produced in the domestic IT industry, and can serve as a readily available transportation system for short driving distances due to the increased efficiency on narrow national highways. This study was aimed at developing a Z-Spring to minimize the vibration by installing an air spring instead of the plate spring applied to conventional freight cars and to prevent the damage of the loaded cargo from the shock occurring during movement. The mechanical properties (elastic modulus, tensile strength, and shear strength) of carbon fiber (CF) and glass fiber (GF) prepreg were derived, and ANSYS ACP PrepPost analyses were performed. It was observed that in the case of hybrid composites, the total deformation and equivalent stress are higher than that of CFRP; however, in terms of the unit cost, the hybrid Z-Spring is more inexpensive and durable compared to the GF.

This paper aims to improve the critical speed of power-take-off (PTO) shafts by using carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs). The PTO shaft was designed with titanium-CFRPs hybrid structure in order to compensate the low shear strength of CFRPs. Based on the requirements for PTO shafts, the dimensions of PTO shafts were determined through a parametric study. To evaluate the performance of the PTO shaft, a vibration test, a static torsion test, and a torsion durability test were performed. In the vibration test, the critical speed of PTO shafts was 20570 rpm, which was 7.5% higher than that of titanium shafts. Additionally, it was confirmed that the maximum allowable torque of the PTO shaft was 2300 N·m. Finally, under repeated load in the range of 11.3 to 113 N·m, the fatigue failure in the PTO shaft did not occur up to 106 cycles.
The strength models for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)-confined normal strength concrete (NC) cylinders available in the literature have been suggested based on small databases using limited variables of such structural members portraying less accuracy. The artificial neural network (ANN) is an advanced technique for precisely predicting the response of composite structures by considering a large number of parameters. The main objective of the present investigation is to develop an ANN model for the axial strength of FRP-confined NC cylinders using various parameters to give the highest accuracy of the predictions. To secure this aim, a large experimental database of 313 FRP-confined NC cylinders has been constructed from previous research investigations. An evaluation of 33 different empirical strength models has been performed using various statistical parameters (root mean squared error RMSE, mean absolute error MAE, and coefficient of determination R2) over the developed database. Then, a new ANN model using the Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) has been proposed based on the experimental database that portrayed the highest performance as compared with the previous models with R2=0.92, RMSE=0.27, and MAE=0.33. Therefore, the suggested ANN model can accurately capture the axial strength of FRP-confined NC cylinders that can be used for the further analysis and design of such members in the construction industry.
In the development of a cryogenic propellant tank, the proper selection of adhesives to bond composite and metal liner is important for the safety of operation. In this study, 3 types of adhesives were tested for the ability to bond CFRP composites developed for cryogenic use and aluminum alloy (Al 6061-T6) for lining the tank using double-lap joint specimens. The double-lap joint specimens were tested inside an environmental chamber at room temperature and cryogenic temperature ($-150^{\circ}C$) respectively to compare the bond strength of each adhesive and fracture characteristics. The material properties with temperature of component materials of double-lap joints were measured. In addition, ABAQUS was used for the purpose of analyzing the experimental results.

Transportation or structure has the important role at clothing, food, and housing at modern society. If even the small crack happens and propagates at transportation or structure, the parts are fractured and they can cause a disaster. CT specimen was used in order to investigate the damage trend due to the crack propagation at this study to prevent this situation. As the material of CT specimen, the unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic of the composite material in the limelight nowadays. The laminate angle designated in order of [60/-60/60/-60] was applied to the specimen model with the unidirectional fiber. As the analysis condition, the forced displacement was applied to the hole of upper part after fixing the hole of lower part. At the result of this study, the equivalent stress and shear stress was shown to be higher in order of the structural steel, copper, titanium and aluminum. This study result is thought to be utilized usefully at verifying the damage of CT specimen made of inhomogeneous material.

In the previous research, the axial compressive capacity models for the glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP)-reinforced circular concrete compression elements restrained with GFRP helix were put forward based on small and noisy datasets by considering a limited number of parameters portraying less accuracy. Consequently, it is important to recommend an accurate model based on a refined and large testing dataset that considers various parameters of such components. The core objective and novelty of the current research is to suggest a deep learning model for the axial compressive capacity of GFRP-reinforced circular concrete columns restrained with a GFRP helix utilizing various parameters of a large experimental dataset to give the maximum precision of the estimates. To achieve this aim, a test dataset of 61 GFRP-reinforced circular concrete columns restrained with a GFRP helix has been created from prior studies. An assessment of 15 diverse theoretical models is carried out utilizing different statistical coefficients over the created dataset. A novel model utilizing the group method of data handling (GMDH) has been put forward. The recommended model depicted good effectiveness over the created dataset by assuming the axial involvement of GFRP main bars and the confining effectiveness of transverse GFRP helix and depicted the maximum precision with MAE = 195.67, RMSE = 255.41, and R2 = 0.94 as associated with the previously recommended equations. The GMDH model also depicted good effectiveness for the normal distribution of estimates with only a 2.5% discrepancy from unity. The recommended model can accurately calculate the axial compressive capacity of FRP-reinforced concrete compression elements that can be considered for further analysis and design of such components in the field of structural engineering.
The elastic waves in a plate are dispersive waves due to the characteristics of Lamb waves. However, S0 symmetric mode is less dispersive in the frequency region below the first cut-off frequency. The wave Propagation velocities vary with the direction in anisotropic plates such as Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) Plates. The wave vector direction and energy flow vector direction are same in isotropic plates. However, the wave vector direction same as the phase velocity direction is not in accordance with the energy flow direction same as the group velocity direction in anisotropic plates. In this study. the dispersion curves or the phase velocity from anti-symmetric and symmetric Lamb wave dispersion equation are calculated for unidirectional laminated composite plate. Slowness surface is sketched using phase velocity under the first cut-off frequency. The direction and magnitude of group velocity are corrected with this slowness surface. The measured group velocities are in good agreement with the corrected group velocity curve except near the fiber direction zone which is called the cusp region.
