boiling flow in vertical tube. The multiphase flow model used in this CFD analysis is the two-fluid model in which liquid(water) and gas(vapour) are considered as continuous and dispersed fluids, respectively. A wall boiling model is also used to simulate the subcooled boiling heat transfer at the heated wall boundary. The diameter and heated length of tube are 0.0154 m and 2 m, respectively. The system pressure in tube is 4.5 MPa and the inlet subcooling is 60 K. The near-wall grid size in the non-dimensional wall unit for lqiuid phase ($y^+_{w,l}$) was examined from 101 to 313 at the outlet boundary. The CFD calculations predicted the void distributions as well as the liquid and wall temperatures in tube. The predicted axial variations of the void fraction and the wall temperature are compared with the measured ones. The CFD prediction of the wall temperature is shown to slightly depend on the near-wall grid size but the axial void prediction has somewhat large dependency. The CFD prediction was found to show a better agreement with the measured one for the large near-wall grid, e.g., $y^+_{w,l}$ > 300 at the tube exit.
Dust released from the rotating timber cutting process causes various kinds of diseases as well as safety issues. Although there were lots of efforts to reduce the amount of dust by installing large-sized dust collectors or by using expensive high-quality cutters, they proved to be not so effective. In this study we want to modify and improve the design of the rotary cutter system to prevent dust from being released to the environment as possible by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. We have developed CFD models of the conventional cutter and several design modifications. Through the CFD analysis the characteristics of the air flow was predicted, and then the behavior of dust produced during the cutting process was analyzed for different designs. The most efficient design feature to capture dust inside the cutter as much as possible was chosen based on the CFD analysis results. Finally the prototype of the ratary saw machine was constructed and tested to check the dust capturing efficiency, which result is reasonably consistent with the predicted performance through the CFD analysis.
Techniques for determinating hydrodynamic derivatives of underwater tow-fish using CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) are described in this paper. Main components of hydrodynamic derivatives are added mass, linear damping and non-linear damping coefficients. In this study, linear and non-linear damping coefficients for translational velocities are settled by CFD analysis. In order to analyze the underwater tow-fish, UlsanFOAM based on open-source CFD code, namely OpenFOAM, is employed. By simulating pitch and yaw angle variation of underwater tow-fish, 6DOF(Degree-of-Freedom) forces and moments are estimated at each attitudes. In order to determinate the hydrodynamic derivatives, curves(forces and moments vs attitude) for CFD results are fitted by least square methods. To demonstrate the applicability of the current approach, two different problems(impulsive side towing and straight towing) are simulated and all results are validated.
To maintain a negative pressure, the supply, exhaust airvolume are adjusted by setting volume damper and the infiltration through leakage area of the door between rooms in biosafety laboratory. Multizone simulation is useful way to predict room pressure, supply and exhaust air volume. But in a particular room, local change such as airflow and contaminants concentration distribution can not be evaluated unfortunately. Through this study, a coupled multizone and CFD simulation was performed, indoor air flow and local contaminants concentration distribution in a particular room of BSL lab are predicted. The results show that all zones of BSL lab are well ventilated by unidirectional flow without local stagnation. In addition, in case that unexpected biohazard is occured in BSL lab, multizone simulation results about the spread of pollutants along movement of the occupant also show that contaminants concentration is removing totally without the spread of the outside. In conclusion, a coupled multizone and CFD simulation can be applied to interpret differential pressure in room and local change of physical quantity in a particular room such as airflow and Influenza A contaminants concentration distribution. This simulation method is useful to enhance the reliability and accuracy of biosafety laboratory design.
Recently SARS and bird flu has been infected widely in the world; we have to care about germs and virus in indoor air environment. Especially that transmission by means of transportation is a major infection route. In this study, a private car simulated with CFD for prediction of indoor airborne microbe transport. Simulation performed with real situation in car, four occupants with a infected driver and four stage air ventilation controled by HVAC system. Result show that CFD can be visualized microbe transport other occupants and who is more exposed to airborne microbe. also it make a prediction of microbe transport in car.
This study conducted CFD analysis on the mean velocity vector of distribution of the ejector driven pipe while changing the inlet velocity to 1 m/s at the diameter ratio of diffuser of 1:3, 1:2.25, 1:1.8 with the end position of driven pipe at 1, 1.253, 1.333, 1.467 respectively, which used $k-{\varepsilon}$/High Reynolds Number for the turbulence model, SIMPLE method for the analysis algorithm, and PIV experiment to verify the CFD analysis. As a result of the CFD analysis the optimum diameter ratio of ejector driven pipe was 1:3, the optimum end position of driven pipe was 1.333 for the diameter ratio of 1:3, 1:2.25, 1:1.8 and the PIV experiment obtained the same result as the CFD analysis. Therefore, the numerical analysis of the flow characteristics of ejector can be used for the optimum design implementation on ejector system.
This study was conducted for verification and systematization of estimation method about the headloss using CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). Head loss which happens between the inlet and outlet of in-line mixer can be a major factor for the design and construction. Also, this Case studies about the sensitivity related to the velocity in the piping system. As result, program's default calculation function was used to get each side's total pressure and the differential of each total pressure could be defined as head loss from in-line mixer. In the case of adopting pipe surface friction factor and geometry loss, Calculation residual can be much more reduced. It was found that residual of value between CFD method and field test ranged about 3 through 18 precent.
The CFD simulation of diesel spray tip penetrations were compared with 0-D simulation for experimental data obtained with common rail injection system. The simulated four injection patterns include single, pilot and split injections. The CFD simulation of the spray penetration over these injection patterns was performed using the KIVA-3V code, which was implemented with both the standard KIVA spray and original gas jet sub-models. 0-D simulation of the spray tip penetration with time-varying injection profiles was formulated based on the effective injection velocity concept as an extension of steady gas jet theory. Both the CFD simulation of the spray tip penetration with the standard KIVA spray model and 0-D simulation matched better with the experimental data than the results of the gas jet model for the entire fuel injection patterns.
The hydraulic design optimization and performance analysis of mixed-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion has been carried out using mean streamline analysis and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. In the present study, the conceptual design optimization has been formulated with a non-linear objective function to minimize the fluid dynamic losses, and then the commercial CFD code was incorporated to allow for detailed flow dynamic phenomena in the pump system. Newly designed mixed-flow model pump has been tested in the laboratory. Predicted performance curves by the CFD code agree very well with experimental data for a newly designed mixed-flow pump over the normal operating conditions. The design and prediction method presented herein can be used efficiently as a unified hydraulic design process of mired-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion.
