  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a grid system META (Metacomputing Environment using Test-run of Application) which facilitates the execution of a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis program on distributed environment. The grid system META allows the CFD program developers can access the computing resources distributed over the network just like one computer system. The research issues involved in the grid computing include fault-tolerance, computing resource selection, and user-interface design. In this paper, we exploits an automatic resource selection scheme for executing the parallel SPMD (Single Program Multiple Data) application written in MPI (Message Passing Interface). The proposed resource selection scheme is informed from the network latency time and the elapsed time of the kernel loop attained from test-run. The network latency time highly influences the executional performance when a parallel program is distributed and executed over several systems. The elapsed time of the kernel loop can be used as an estimator of the whole execution time of the CFD Program due to a common characteristic of CFD programs. The kernel loop consumes over 90% of the whole execution time of a CFD program.

  • Thermoacoustic oscillations (TAOs) could be often observed in liquid helium cryogenic system especially in half-open tubes. These tubes have closed warm end (300K) and open cold end (usually 4.4K). This phenomenon significantly induces additional heat load to cryogenic system and other undesirable effects. This work focuses on using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method to study TAOs in liquid helium. The calculated physical model, numerical scheme and algorithm, and wall boundary conditions were introduced. The simulation results of onset process of thermoacoustic oscillations were presented and analyzed. In addition, other important characteristics including phase relation and frequency were studied. Moreover, comparisons between experiments and the CFD simulations were made, which demonstrated thevalidity of CFD simulation. CFD simulation can give us a better understanding of onset mechanism of TAOs and nonlinear characteristics in liquid helium cryogenic system.

  • CFD analysis is an analytical technique that applies a computer to the design and development of products across the entire industry for heat or fluid flow. This technology is used to shorten the development period and reduce costs through computerized simulation. However, the software used for CFD analysis is now required to use expensive foreign software. The Opensource CFD analysis software used in the proposed system has reliability of commercial CFD analysis software and has various user groups. However, for users who have expert knowledge, Opensource CFD software which supports only text interface environment, We have developed an environment that enables the construction of a CFD analysis environment for beginners as well as professionals. In addition, the proposed system supports the pre-processing (design and meshing) environment for CFD analysis and the environment for post-processing (result analysis & visualization), enabling the integrated CFD analysis process in one platform.

  • At present, most of the widely used system codes for nuclear safety analysis are one-dimensional, which cannot effectively simulate the flow field of the reactor core or other structures. This is true even for the system codes containing three-dimensional modules with limited three-dimensional simulation function such as RELAP-3D. In contrast, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes excel at providing a detailed three-dimensional flow field of the reactor core or other components; however, the computational domain is relatively small and results in the very high computing resource consuming. Therefore, the development of coupling codes, which can make comprehensive use of the advantages of system and CFD codes, has become a research focus. In this paper, a review focus on the researches of coupled CFD and thermal-hydraulic system codes was carried out, which summarized the method of coupling, the data transfer processing between CFD and system codes, and the verification and validation (V&V) of coupled codes. Furthermore, a series of problems associated with the coupling procedure have been identified, which provide the general direction for the development and V&V efforts of coupled codes.

  • High-resolution flows around a steep mountainous island (Ulleungdo) in Korea were simulated by a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. To cover entire Ulleungdo and to resolve the topography around the Ulleungdo automatic synoptic observing system (ASOS) with high resolution, one-way nested grid system with large (60 m), and small (20 m) grid sizes was applied in the CFD model simulations. We conducted the numerical simulations for 16 inflow directions, and, for each inflow direction, we considered six different wind velocities(5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 m s-1) at the reference height (1,000 m). The effects of topography on surface wind observations were well reflected in the observed wind roses for the period of January 01, 2012 ~ December 31, 2016 at the Ulleungdo ASOS and marine buoy. Wind roses at the Ulleungdo ASOS was reproduced based on the CFD simulations. The changes in surface winds at the Ulleungdo ASOS caused by surrounding topography were relatively well simulated by the CFD model. The simulated wind-rose indicated that south-southwesterly and northeasterly were the dominant wind directions, which were also observed at the Ulleungdo ASOS. We investigated the flow characteristics around the Ulleungdo ASOS for northwesterly, south-southwesterly, and northeasterly winds in detail.

  • The Canard rotor/wing (CRW) aircraft concepts offer great potential for application by allowing the use of a common propulsion system for high-speed cruise and low-speed powered lift. Using the rotor for lift in both flight modes increases its utility. In the hovering mode, the exhausted gas from an gas turbine engine is accelerated through the duct system and it provides the tipjet power for rotor system enough to lift the aircraft. In the cruise mode, the rotor is fixed and the exhausted gas is extracted through the main nozzle, such that the aircraft is able to flight with high speed. The duct system was designed using 1-D fanno line flow theory and empirical data. However, the empirical data of the pressure loss coefficient for various bending and dividing ducts were not enough to design our duct system adaptively. Therefore, using 3-D CFD analysis we obtained the pressure loss coefficient for our duct models and chose the appropriate bending or diving duct type. In this paper, we used the CFD-ACE+ software package for the CFD analysis and the modeling of duct system. Through the 3-D CFD analysis, we investigated also the pressure loss and the velocity distributions of the designed whole duct system as well as the blade duct. Comparing the 3-D CFD result with 1-D analysis result, we lessened the uncertainty of the designed duct system and speculated the problem that was not concerned in design state.

  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis was carried out to investigate exhaust gas flow and acoustic characteristics in the exhaust system of a passenger car. Transient 3-dimensional flow field in the front and rear mufflers was simulated by CFD and far-field sound pressure was modeled by a simple monopole source method. Engine performance simulation was also performed to obtain the boundary condition of instantaneous fluid flow variation at the inlet of the exhaust system. Detailed exhaust gas flow characteristics such as velocity and pressure distribution inside the mufflers were presented and the pulsating pressure amplitude was compared at several positions in the exhaust system to deduce sound pressure level. The present method of the acoustic analysis coupled with CFD techniques would be very effective for the prediction of sound noise from vehicle exhaust systems although the effects of the inlet boundary condition and heat transfer on the accuracy of the prediction have to be validated through further studies.
