This paper summarizes the results of a Writing Group on the Extension of CFD codes to two-phase flow safety problems, which was created by the Group for Analysis and Management of Accidents of the Nuclear Energy Agency' Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (NEA-CSNI). Two-phase CFD used for safety investigations may predict small scale flow processes, which are not seen by system thermalhydraulic codes. However, the two-phase CFD models are not as mature as those in the single phase CFD and potential users need some guidance for proper application. In this paper, a classification of various modelling approaches is proposed. Then, a general multi-step methodology for using two-phase-CFD is explained, including a preliminary identification of flow processes, a model selection, and a verification and validation process. A list of 26 nuclear reactor safety issues that could benefit from investigations at the CFD scale is identified. Then, a few issues are analyzed in more detail, and a preliminary state-of-the-art is proposed and the remaining gaps in the existing approaches are identified. Finally, guidelines for users are proposed.
It is important to understand the flow characteristics such as wave and wake development around a ship for the design of the hull forms with better resistance and propulsive performance. The experimental results explicating the local flow characteristics are also invaluable for validation of the physical and numerical modeling of CFD codes, which are recently gaining acknowledgements as efficient tools for hull form evaluation This paper describes velocity and wave profiles measured in the towing tank for the KRISO 138K LNG Carrier (KLNG) model with propeller and rudder. The results contained in this paper can provide the valuable information on the effect of propeller and rudder on stern flow characteristics of the modern commercial hull form, furthermore, the present experimental data will provide important database for CFO validation.
The issues associated with the application of CFD for ship design are addressed. Doubtlessly at the moment, CFD tools are very useful in evaluating hull forms prior to traditional towing tank tests. However, time-consuming pre-processing is an obstacle in the daily application of CFD tools to improve hull forms. The accuracy of computational modeling without sacrificing the usability of CFD system is also to be assessed. The wave generation is still predicted by using potential panel methods, while velocity profiles entering into propeller plane is solved using turbulent flow solvers. The choice of turbulence model is a key to predict nominal wake distribution within acceptable accuracy. The experimental data for CFD validation are invaluable to improve physical and numerical modeling. Other applications of CFD for ship design than hull form improvement are also given. It is certain that CFD can be a cost-effective tool for the design of new and better ships.

CFD simulation is widely used in various industries, universities and research centers. In Korea most of the researchers use foreign commercial S/W packages especially in industries. But commercial CFD packages have some problems as limit to source code and very high license foe. So from several years ago open source CFD code has been widely spread as an alternative. But in Korea there are a few users of open source code. Insufficiency of performance validation as for accuracy, robustness, convenience and parallel speed-up is important obstacles of open source code. So we tested some validation cases as to incompressible external aerodynamics and internal flaws and now are doing compressible flaws. As the first stage of compressible flow validation, we simulated Korea next generation high speed train(HEMU). It's running condition is 400km/hr and maximum Mach number reaches up to 0.4. With the high speed train we tested accuracy, robustness and parallel performance of open source CFD code OpenFOAM Because there isn't experimental data we compared results with widely used commercial code. When use $1^{st}$ order upwind scheme aerodynamic forces are very similar to commercial code. But using $2^{nd}$ order upwind scheme there was some discrepancy. The reason of the difference is not clear yet. Mesh manipulation, domain decomposition, post-processing and robustness are satisfactory. Paralle lperformance is similar to commercial code.
In the present study, numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the characteristics of the mist flow through the fire suppression nozzles. The commercial CFD software, FLUENT with the proper modeling was applied in both the internal and external flow region of the spray nozzles. Applications were done to the full cone nozzle for the operation range of the low pressure and high flow-rate. Numerical validation was proved by the comparison of the experimental data. Parametric study of the key design factors was tried to improve the performance.
A validation of a 3D CFD model for predicting local subcooling of moderator in the vicinity of calandria tubes in a CANDU reactor is performed. The small scale moderator experiments performed at Sheridan Park Experimental Laboratory(SPEL) in Ontario, Canada[1] is used for the validation. Also a comparison is made between previous CFD analyses based on 2DMOTH and PHOENICS, and the current model analysis for the same SPEL experiment. For the current model, a set of grid structures for the same geometry as the experimental test section is generated and the momentum, heat and continuity equations are solved by CFX-4.3, a CFD code developed by AEA technology. The matrix of calandria tubes is simplified by the porous media approach. The standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model associated with logarithmic wall treatment and SIMPLEC algorithm on the body fitted grid are used and buoyancy effects are accounted for by the Boussinesq approximation. For the test conditions simulated in this study, the flow pattern identified is a buoyancy-dominated flow, which is generated by the interaction between the dominant buoyancy force by heating and inertial momentum forces by the inlet jets. As a result, the current CFD moderator analysis model predicts the moderator temperature reasonably, and the maximum error against the experimental data is kept at less than $2.0^{\circ}C$ over the whole domain. The simulated velocity field matches with the visualization of SPEL experiments quite well.
This paper dealt with the flow simulation for the optimum designed propeller for Micro Aerial Vehicle, using a commercial CFD program(FLUENT). The propeller was modeled by the Multiple Reference Frame(MRF) method. For the validation of the computational method, the flow field analysis results for the propeller were compared with the flow analysis results, which are using Xfoil, for the optimum design, and with the wind tunnel data of a similar propeller model. By these validation processes, the reliability of MRF method was confirmed.
Flow characteristics of jet impingement over concave hemispherical surface with effusion cooling holes is relatively more complex than that of a flat surface, so the experimental validation for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results is important. In this study, experimental results were compared with simulation results obtained by assuming different turbulence models. The vortex was observed in the region between the central jets where the recirculation structure appeared. The different patterns of vorticity distributions were observed for each turbulence models due to different interaction of the injected jet flow. Among them, the transition k-kl-ω model predicted similarly not only the jet potential core region with higher velocity, but also the recirculation region between the central jets. From the validation, it may be helpful to accurately predict heat and mass transfer in jet impingement/effusion hole system.
The comming of high speed computers with large memory size in recent years has allowed the practical development of codes which solve the Reynolds-averaged NAvier-Stokes (RANS) equations in three dimensions. Such codes are already used by the large engine manufacturers for the advanced design of some engine components. Different computational fluid dynamics approaches and turbulence models exist, and it seems essential today to establish their degree of validity for application to typical configurations in turbomachinery. In 1993 the Turbomachinery Committee of the IGTI of ASME has issued an open invitation to predict the flow details of an isolated transonic fan rotor called as NASA ROTOR 37. This paper reports this test case.
