A Study of Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Car's Side-view Mirror using CFD (CFD를 이용한 자동차 사이드 미러의 공력특성 연구)

  • Aerodynamic characteristics, such as drag and lift, play an important role in automobile design under certain speed conditions. Such characteristics are essential to design an automobile since they are directly related to automobile's performance such as passenger safety and fuel consumption. There is a huge demand for the automobile to have safe performance at high speed. Reduction in drag is also important and it could lead to the solution of air flow induced noise and dust problems. The objective of this research is to find out the aerodynamic differences between conventional side mirror and a modified one using CFD. Although drag generated around a side mirror is only about 7% of the total drag when a car runs, it is very closely related to driver's field of vision and noise generation. CFD simulation of the flowfield around a car side-view mirror was performed using a commercial code; Gambit and FLUENT.

Computation of Flow around a Container Ship with Twin-Skegs using the CFD (CFD를 이용한 쌍축 컨테이너선 주위의 유동계산)

  • In this study. a numerical analysis has been performed for the turbulent flow around a 15,000TEU twin-skeg container ship using a commercial CFD code. FLUENT. The computed results have been compared with the model test data from MOERI. We investigated viscous resistance coefficient. wake distribution and characteristics of the shear flow according to the grid numbers. Although the free surface is approximated by the plane of symmetry in this work. the calculated axial velocity and transverse vector show a good agreement with the MOERI experimental data except for the region of 0.9 level of axial velocity at the propeller plane. The numerical analysis show that commercial CFD code is useful tool for the evaluation of complex hull form with twin-skegs.

  • 본 논문에서는 전력용 변압기 온도상승을 예측하기 위해 CFD 상용 프로세서인 Fluent를 이용하였다. 온도상승의 원인이 되는 전력손실은 자계 상용 프로세서인 Maxwell을 이용하였으며, 자계해석에 의해 얻은 전력손실을 유체역학과 열전달을 동시에 고려한 열유동해석의 열원으로 적용하였다. 해석의 정확도를 향상시키기 위해 변압기 권선의 형상을 실제형상과 유사하게 모델링하였으며, 해석결과의 타당성을 검증하기 위해 온도 상승 시험을 통해 얻은 측정값과 비교하였다.

  • Lately, the cavitation and erosion phenomena in the rudder have been increased for high-speed container ships. However, cavitation is not prone to occur in model experiments because of low Reynolds number. In order to predict the cavitation phenomena, the - analysis of the viscous flow in the rudder gap is positively necessary In this study, numerical calculation was applied to the two-dimensional flow around the rudder gap using FLUENT code. The velocity and pressure field were numerically acquired and cavitation phenomena could be predicted. And the case that the round bar was installed in the rudder gap was analyzed. For reducing the acceleration force when fluid flow through the gap, modified rudder shape is proposed, It is shown that modified rudder shape restrain the pressure drop at the entrance of the gap highly both in the computational results and in the model experiment, and reduce the cavitation bubbles.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a vertical axis wind turbine blade as the basic study of a design of a vertical axis wind turbine. The lift and drag coefficients of the various shape of the vortical axis wind turbine blades are analyzed and compared using the CFD code Fluent. To validate the numerical analysis, the predicted results of the Fluent are compared with those of the Xfoil code and the experimental results. We conclude that the program Fluent can be used to predict the aerodynamics of the wind turbine blade. By comparing the predicted results of the aerodynamic characteristics of the different shape of the blades, an appropriate shape of the blade is suggested to design the vortical axis wind turbine blade.

A Study on the Spray Characteristics of Swirl Injectors Using ANSYS Fluent (ANSYS Fluent를 이용한 와류형 분사기의 분무특성 연구)

  • Numerical studies on the spray characteristics of closed-type and open-type swirl injectors were conducted using ANSYS Fluent. By changing injection pressures, discharge coefficient and spray angle were calculated using the Reynolds stress BSL turbulent model. The numerical results were compared with previous experimental data to examine their accuracy. For a closed-type swirl injector, spray angles matched well with experimental results and discharge coefficients showed approximately 8% differences. On the contrary, discharge coefficients of an open-type swirl injector were similar with experimental result but its spray angles presented around 15% differences. Though the numerical results were not perfectly consistent with experimental data, it is thought that they could be sufficiently used for analyzing spray characteristics, specially which is hard to be measured from experiments. Numerical simulation with different turbulent models was also performed to examine their effects on the numerical results.

  • The reformer is one of the most important chemical processes for the production of high purity hydrogen from fossil fuel. This study compares zero-dimensional model with CFD models for reaction analysis of methane-steam reformer. The zero-dimensional model is an empirical equation, however CFD model uses reactions of Arrhenius type. Because the reaction coefficients of the steam-methane catalytic reforming have not been reported before in the form of Arrhenius type, the present study aims to find the appropriate reaction coefficients. The used CFD code is Fluent 6.2 version. Several models are compared for the case of various operating temperature, mass of catalyst and steam to methane ratio.

Design Technique of Post Swirl Stator in Container Vessels by CFD (CFD를 이용한 컨테이너선의 Post Swirl Stator 설계기법)

  • Post swirl stator is an energy saving device to recover rotational energy of the propeller. To optimize the performance of post swirl stator in container vessels, computational fluid dynamics using body force method was introduced. A commercial code Fluent was used in conjunction with body force distributed on the surface of actuator disk which is located in the propeller plane to optimize pitch angle of the post swirl stator blade. This study showed that CFD is an important tool to simulate flow behind ship with propeller, rudder and post swirl stator.

  • This article has investigated the spatial distribution of the solid particles in polymerization reactors using CFD analysis (FLUENT v. 6.2.1). The suspension of the solids in stirred reactors is affected by a number of parameters including particle diameter, vessel shape, impeller size, impeller speed, and rotating direction of stirrer. The degree of solids suspension in the vessel was quantified with a statistical average value, ${\sigma}^2$. The best stirring conditions were determined based on ${\sigma}^2$, which was found to depend on the vessel bottom shape.

  • Numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the characteristics of the mist flow through the fire suppression nozzles. The commercial CFD software, FLUENT with the proper modeling was applied for analyzing both the internal and external flow of the spray nozzles. Computations were made for the full cone nozzle in the operation range of the low pressure and high flow-rate. To validate the present computational procedure, numerical results are compared with measurements in terms of K-factor, SMD, axial spray velocity and spray angles. Numerical results suggested that the present numerical model can be used as an adequate tool for a design purpose of mist-spray nozzles.
