  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of large-scale coal-fired boilers requires a complicated set of flow, heat transfer and combustion process models based on different degrees of simplification. This study investigates the influence of coal devolatilization, char conversion and turbulent gas reaction models in CFD for a tangential-firing boiler at 500MWe capacity. Devolatilization model is found out not significant on the overall results, when the kinetic rates and the composition of volatiles were varied. In contrast, the turbulence mixing rate influenced significantly on the gas reaction rates, temperature, and heat transfer rate on the wall. The influence of char conversion by the unreacted core shrinking model (UCSM) and the 1st-order global rate model was not significant, but the unburned carbon concentration was predicted in details by the UCSM. Overall, the effects of the selected models were found similar with previous study for a wall-firing boiler.

  • To evaluate the unsteady motion in laterally berthing maneuver, it is necessary to estimate clearly the magnitudes and properties of hydrodynamic forces acting on ship hull in shallow water. A numerical simulation has been performed to investigate quantitatively the hydrodynamic force according to water depth for Wigley model using the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique. By comparing the computational results with the experimental ones, the validity of the CFD method was verified. The numerical solutions successfully captured some features of transient flow around the berthing ship. The transitional lateral force in a state ranging from the rest to the uniform motion is modeled by using the concept of circulation.

  • The coupled time-integration method with a staggered algorithm based on computational structural dynamics (CSD), finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been developed in order to demonstrate physical vibration phenomena due to dynamic aeroelastic excitations. Virtual flutter tests for the spanwise curved wing model have been effectively conducted using the present advanced computational methods with high speed parallel processing technique. In addition, the present system can simultaneously give a recorded data fie to generate virtual animation for the flutter safety test. The results for virtual flutter test are compared with the experimental data of wind tunnel test. It is shown from the results that the effect of spanwise curvature have a tendency to decrease the flutter dynamic pressure for the same flight condition.

  • We performed calculations combining optimization technologies and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) aimed at reducing wind forces and mitigating wind environments (local strong winds) around buildings. However, the Reynolds Averaged Navier-stokes Simulation (RANS), which seems somewhat inaccurate, needs to be used to create a realistic CFD optimization tool. Therefore, in this study we explored the possibilities of optimizing calculations using RANS. We were able to demonstrate that building configurations advantageous to wind forces could be predicted even with RANS. We also demonstrated that building layouts was more effective than building configurations in mitigating local strong winds around tall buildings. Additionally, we used the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) as an airflow prediction method alternative to CFD in order to increase the speed of optimization calculations, and validated its prediction accuracy.

  • The off-set strip fins (OSF) have been widely used to construct plate-fin heat exchangers. Conventional OSF is constructed in successive rows of fins. New OSF structure is suggested to have a gap between adjacent rows of fins. The gap is intended to reduce fouling by allowing small objects to flow through fins. The objective of this work is to investigate the performance of off-set strip fins with gap between successive rows. Results showed that the performance of OSF with gap can't be predicted by previous correlation.

  • Maneuvering oblique towing test is simulated in a Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) environment to obtain the linear and nonlinear velocity dependent damping coefficients for a DTMB 5512 model ship. The simulations are carried out in freely accessible OpenFOAM library with three different solvers, rasInterFoam, LTSInterFoam and interDyMFoam, and two turbulence models, $k-{\varepsilon}$ and SST $k-{\omega}$ in presence of free surface. Turning and zig-zag maneuvers are simulated for the DTMB 5512 model ship using the calculated damping coefficients with CFD. The comparison of simulated results with the available experimental shows a very good agreement among them.

  • Small drops in gas cause some problems for downstream equipments such as turbine, compressor and etc. In some cases, we are obliged to remove hazardous liquid mist from gas. In order to remove water or other liquids from the gas, there are some equipments like mesh mist eliminator and vane-plate mist eliminator. oil mist filter is a kind of liquid eliminator equipments used to remove the liquid with 1-10um droplet diameter from the gas. In this paper is determine the factors affecting the oil mist filter efficiency using CFD. length and angle of the filter were considered and the results and compare the results of the efficiency tests, showed error of less than 3%. optimum filter can remove more than 87.3% between 1 and 10um of oil mist.
