Decomposition Characteristics of CF4 by SiC/Al2O3 Modified with Cerium Sulfate Using Microwave System (마이크로파를 이용한 황산세륨으로 개질화 된 SiC/Al2O3 촉매의 CF4 분해 특성)

  • Alumina-based catalysts with different Ce loadings were studied in the decomposition of $CF_4$ using microwave heating system. Heating material of microwave system used Silicon Carbide. The crystallographic phases of catalysts were investigated by XRD and decomposition rates of $CF_4$ were examined by GC-TCD. The catalysts of 10 wt% Ce modified $Al_2O_3$ showed higher $CF_4$ decomposition rate than un-modified $Al_2O_3$ for $500^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature. The k value of catalysts shows the order of $Ce(20)/Al_2O_3=Ce(0)/Al_2O_3<Ce(5)/Al_2O_3<Ce(10)/Al_2O_3$. XRD patterns of $Ce(0)/Al_2O_3$ were no difference before and after the reaction and showed $Al_2O_3$ phases. With the increase in Ce loadings, $CeO_2$, $AlF_3$ of XRD peaks was observed. The results was indicated that Ce modifed $Al_2O_3$ than un-modifed $Al_2O_3$ was decreased reaction temperature to $200^{\circ}C$ with same decomposition rate. Also the appropriated cerium sulfate loadings on $Al_2O_3$ were 5~10 wt%.

  • [ $Pt/CeO_2$ ] 촉매에 Zr을 첨가하여 우수한 저온 수성가스전화반응의 활성을 가진 촉매를 만들었다. $Pt/ZrO_2-CeO_2$ 촉매는 $Pt/ZrO_2$$Pt/CeO_2$ 촉매에 비해 Ce와 Zr의 상호작용에 의한 시너지 효과로 인해 CO chemisorption으로 측정한 Pt area가 증가하고 담체에 Pt가 잘 분산되었다. 또한, Zr이 첨가된 $Pt/CeO_2$는 Ce의 redox 능력을 향상시켜 support의 reducibility를 향상시켰다. 담체에 고르게 잘 분산되고 support의 산소저장능력과 reducibility가 향상된 $3\;wt\%\;Pt/ZrO_2-CeO_2$ 촉매들은 반응물에 수소와 이산화탄소의 첨가 유무와 상관없이 $3\;wt\%\;Pt/ZrO_2$$3\;wt\%\;Pt/CeO_2$ 촉매보다 우수한 활성을 보였다.

Mechanical Properties of $Zr(Y,Ce)O_2$ TZP After Aging in Hydrothermal Conditon ($Zr(Y,Ce)O_2$ TZP의 수열분위기 시효후의 기계적 성질)

  • Zr(Y,Ce)O2 TZP ceramics were prepared by sintering compacts of 3 mol% Y2O3-TZP(3Y-TZP) powders with different amount of 12 mol% CeO2-TZP(12Ce-TZP) in air at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The phase changes microstructure and mechanical properties of Zr(Y. Ce)O2 TZP after hydrothermal aging(20$0^{\circ}C$ 5h) were investigated. Although an addition of 12Ce-TZP accelerated the grain growth of Zr(Y, Ce)O2 TZP it restrained the transformation of tetragonal to the monoclinic phase during aging. The degradation in mechanical properties of sintered bodies was governed by the formed monoclinic phase and chemical composition. Induced Vickers indentation crack was propagated intergranually. From SEM observation of the fracture surfaces the pull-out of individual grain was confirmed.

Valence Band Photoemission Study of the Kondo Insulator CeNiSn

  • The electronic structure of the Kondo insulator CeNiSn has been investigated by using photoemission spectroscopy. A satellite feature is observed in the valence band spectrum about 6 eV below the Ni 3d main peak, indicating a strong Ni 3d Coulomb correlation in CeNiSn. The Ce 4f partial spectral weight exhibits three peak structures, including one due to the 4f1\longrightarrow4f0 transition, another near EF, and the other which overlaps the Ni 3d main peak. We interpret the peak near EF as reflecting mainly the Ce 4f/Sn 5p hybridization, whereas that around the ni 3d main peak as reflecting both the Ce 4f/Ni 3d and Ce 5d/Ni 3d hybridization. Yield measurements across the 4d\longrightarrow4f threshold indicate the Ce valence to be close to 3+. The prominent Fermi edge suggests a metallic ground state in CeNiSn.

Surface Potential Behavior of Nano $CeO_2$ Particles in Aqueous Media (수계분산매체에서 나노 $CeO_2$ 입자의 계면전위 거동)

  • In this study, the dispersion stability of nano-sized CeO2 particles, synthesized by hydrothermal method in aqueous was evaluated from observing the surface potential behavior of CeO2 particle synthesized by solid state reaction. The isoelectric point(IEP) of nano-sized CeO2 synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis was found to be pH 9 contrary to the isoelectric point of micro-sized CeO2 synthesized by solid state reaction at pH 6.7. IEP was shifted to pH 2.0 as the addition of D-3019 from 0.1 to 1.0 wt%. The surface potential of CeO2 particles synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis was reduced as the addition of B-1001 used as a binder without change of IEP because the absorption of B-1001 polymer on the CeO2 particles shifted the shear plane of CeO2 particles outward away from the surface. This surface potential behavior was well correlated with the dispersion stability of slurry.

  • Cerium oxide thin film has been proposed as a buffer layer between the ferroelectric film and the Si substrate in Metal-Ferroelectric-Insulator-Silicon (MFIS ) structures for ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) applications. In this study, CeO$_2$thin films were etched with Cl$_2$/Ar gas combination in an inductively coupled plasma (ICP). The highest etch rate of CeO$_2$film is 230 $\AA$/min at Cl$_2$/(Cl$_2$+Ar) gas mixing ratio of 0.2. This result confirms that CeO$_2$thin film is dominantly etched by Ar ions bombardment and is assisted by chemical reaction of Cl radicals. The selectivity of CeO$_2$to YMnO$_3$was 1.83. As a XPS analysis, the surface of etched CeO$_2$thin films was existed in Ce-Cl bond by chemical reaction between Ce and Cl. The results of XPS analysis were confirmed by SIMS analysis. The existence of Ce-Cl bonding was proven at 176.15 (a.m.u.).

Study on the Relationship between Epidermal Barrier Function and Cornified Envelope (CE)-Bound Lipids

  • The importance of cornified envelope (CE)-bound lipids to epidermal barrier function is increasingly being recognized. In the present study, we intentionally damaged the cornified layer of hairless mice by ultraviolet irradiation and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) treatment, and assessed the changes in epidermal barrier function by measuring Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL). We also measured changes in the amount of CE-bound lipids using thin layer chromatography (TLC). The results showed that both treatments increased TEWL and decreased CE-bound lipids (omega-hydroxy cerami de and omega-hydroxy acid). In addition, investigation of the chronological changes in TEWL revealed an inverse relationship between TEWL and CE-bound lipids, and a correlation between CE-bound lipids and epidermal barrier function. We then measured the amount of CE-bound lipids in the cheek and the medial side of the upper arm in humans. The results showed that because the cheek receives external stimulation on a daily basis, the amount of CE-bound lipids was significantly lower, while the level of TEWL was higher. These observations, together with those from the animal study, indicate that CE-bound lipids are related to epidermal barrier function.

Effect of $Sb_2O_3$ on Solarization of Photosensitive Glasses Containing Ag and $CeO_2$

  • The relationship between the addition of Sb$_2$O$_3$ and the color difference by solarization in photosensitive glasses was investigated. Glasses containing CeO$_2$ and Sb$_2$O$_3$ simultaneously and glasses with only CeO$_2$ were changed reddish and yellowish respectively after exposing to ultra violet ray. Color difference between compositions was represented by dominant wavelength and purity. Since, in glasses containing CeO$_2$ and Sb$_2$O$_3$ simultaneously, Sb$_2$O$_3$ as reduction agent affected Ce$^3+$ ions to increase in glass and more Ce$^4+$ ions were induced than in glasses with only CeO$_2$ during UV irradiation, more electrons released by photo-ionization, which were color centers, were trapped by Ce$^4+$. In conclusion, the introduction of Sb$_2$O$_3$ to photosensitive glasses with CeO$_2$ resulted in the change of color center concentration in glasses and prevented the solarization of photosensitive glasses with CeO$_2$.

  • The electronic structure and various physical properties of CeO2, Ce2O3, PrO2, and Pr2O3 have been studied from the framework of Ab-initio by the all-electron projector-augmented-wave (PAW) method, as implemented VASP (Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package). The generalized gradient approximation (GGA) with effective U (Ueff) has been used to explain the strong on-site Coulomb repulsion among the localized Ce 4f electrons. The dependence of selected observables of these materials on the Ueff parameter has been scrutinized. The studied properties contain lattice constants, density of states, and reaction energies of CeO2, Ce2O3, PrO2, and Pr2O3. For CeO2 and PrO2, the GGA(PBE)+U results are in good agreement with experimental data whereas for the computational calculationally more demanding Ce2O3 and Pr2O3 both approaches give comparable accuracy. This results represent that by choosing an appropriate Ueff it is possible to reliably describe structural and electronic properties of CeO2, Ce2O3, PrO2, and Pr2O3, which enables modeling of oxygen reduction reaction processes involving ceria-based materials.

Magnetroresistance Effect of $Fe/CeO_{2}Fe_{75}Co_{25}$ Tunnel Junctions ($Fe/CeO_{2}Fe_{75}Co_{25}$ 터널접합의 잔기저항효과)

  • A series of Fe/CeO$_2$/Fe$_{75}$Co$_{25}$ tunnel junctions (Magnetic Tunnel Junction, MTJ) having CeO$_2$ barrier layers from 30 to 90$\AA$ in thickness were prepared by ion beam sputtering (IBS) method. In order to compare the properties of MTJs, Fe/Al oxide/Fe-Co tunnel junctions were also prepared. Some junctions with a CeO$_2$ barrier layer showed the ferromagnetic tunneling effect and the highest MR ratio at room temperature was 5%. The electric resistance of junctions with a CeO$_2$ barrier layer was higher that that of junctions with an Al oxide barrier. On the other hand, The interface analysis of the Fe/CeO$_2$ bilayer was conducted by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that CeO$_2$ was decomposed to Ce and $O_2$ during sputtering, and Fe was oxidized with these decomposed $O_2$ molecules. The reduction of both electric resistance and MR ratio may be associated with the decomposed Ce in the barrier layer.r.r.
