Quality characteristics and antioxidant activity of Sooyeon noodles supplemented with sorghum powder (수수가루 첨가 수연소면의 품질특성과 산화방지 활성)

  • This study investigated the qualitative characteristics of Sooyeon noodles supplemented by sorghum powder at concentrations of 10, 15, 20, and 25%. L- and b-values of Sooyeon noodles decreased while its a-value was significantly increased by the addition of sorghum powder. Additionally, sorghum powder increased the weight, volume, and water uptake of noodles. Turbidity as well as cooking loss of cooked noodles decreased significantly due to the addition of sorghum powder. Increasing concentration levels of sorghum powder resulted in an increase in the hardness of cooked noodles, which was in the range of 1,236-1,932 g, and a decrease in tension, which was in the range of 152-105 g. The same trend was observed in the dough production process. Sooyeon noodles with 25% sorghum powder yielded the highest total polyphenol content (3.668 GAE mg/g) and flavonoid content (1.893 CE mg/g). DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities increased linearly to 0.704 and 0.815 AA mg/g, and 0.355 and 0.935 AA mg/g. respectively.

Indoor Air Quality Pollution of PM2.5 and Associated Trace Elements Affected by Environmental Tobacco Smoke (환경담배연기로 인한 실내공기 중 PM2.5 및 미량성분 오염 특성)

  • Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) samples were collected separately in mainstream and side-stream smoke using a self-designed smoking machine, and a total 40 of PM2.5 was collected with low volume air sampler at indoor environments with and without ETS in Daejeon, Korea. About 20 trace elements including toxic metals like As, Cr, Mn, Se, V, and Zn were determined in PM2.5 and ETS samples by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). It is found that the emission factors of K, Cl, Na, and Al were much higher than those of toxic elements for both mainstream and side-stream smoke. The average concentration of PM2.5 was enriched by 1.5 times at smoking area ($58.7{\pm}18.1{\mu}g/m^3$) than at smoking free area ($38.6{\pm}12.7{\mu}g/m^3$). The concentration ratio of each element between smoking and smoking free area were ranged from 1.1 to 6.0 except Cu (1.0); especially, Ce (6.0), La (5.2), K (2.3), and Co (2.0) showed higher ratio, which suggests that the ETS is one of the possible increasing factors of PM2.5 and elemental concentration at indoor environment.

The Nutritive Values and Manufacture of Total Mixed Fermentation Feeds using Green Forage Crops and RiCE-straw (청예 사료작물과 볏짚을 이용한 완전배합발효사료의 제조와 영양적가치)

  • Adequate forage amounts in ruminant animal are necessary for proper ruminal function in dairy cow. This study was carried out to determine the effect of total mixed fermentation feeds made by different green forage crops and grain processings on chemical compositions, RFV (relative feed value) and ruminal characteristics in sheep. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with 4 replications. The main plot consisted of 6 kinds of green forages (corn, grass, rye, rape, alfalfa and oat) and the sub plots three different grain processings such as non-milling, half milling (7mm mesh over), and regular milling (7mm mesh below). And the different TMFFs (total mixed fermentation feeds) were analyzed for chemical composition and fed to 8 ruminally fistulated sheep for ruminal charactics and palatability. RFV, daily feed intake, acetate/propionate ratio of the rape-TMFFs were higher compared with the other treatment. Ruminal content of VFA (volatile fatty acid) of corn-TMFF was highest as 90.19 mmol% and pH of the feed was lowest as 3.82. But, acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid were no difference among treatments. In conclusion, the effect of grain proceeding was not appeared but if consider of only RFV, palatability and dry matter disappearance, grade of TMFF was improved in order of rape-, corn-, alfalfa-, grass-, oat- and rye-TMFF.

Regulatory Effects of Exercise and Dietary Intervention in Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase Signaling Pathways in Rats

  • As a central component of a novel protein kinase cascade, the activation of the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase cascade has attracted considerable attention. We sought to determine the effect of exercise and diet on the activation of the extracellular-signal regulated protein kinase (ERK) 1/2 and the p38 MAP kinase pathways in rat soleus muscle. Forty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to one of two dietary conditions: high-carbohydrate (CHO) or high-fat (FAT). Animals having each dietary condition were further divided into one of three subgroups: a sedentary control group that did not exercise (NT), a group that performed 8 weeks of treadmill running and was sacrificed 48 h after their final treadmill run (CE), and a group that was sacrificed immediately after their final routine exercise training (AE). A high-fat diet did not have any significant effect on phosphorylated and total forms of ERK 1/2 or p38 MAP kinase. In chronically trained muscle that was taken 48 h after the last training, phosphorylated ERK 1/2 significantly increased only in the FAT but not in the CHO groups. In the case of total ERK 1/2, it increased significantly for both groups. In contrast, both phosphorylated and total forms of p38 MAP kinase decreased markedly compared to sedentary muscle. In muscle that was taken immediately after a last bout of exercise, phosphorylated ERK 1/2 increased in both groups but statistical significance was seen only in the CHO group. Total ERK 1/2 in acutely stimulated muscle increased only in the CHO-AE group even though the degree was much lower than the phosphorylated status. Muscle that was taken immediately after the routine training increased in phosphorylation status of p38 MAP kinase for both dietary conditions. However, statistical significance was seen only in the CHO group owing to a large variation with FAT. In conclusion, a high-fat diet per se did not have any notable effect versus a high-carbohydrate diet on MAP kinase pathways. However, when diet (either CHO or FAT) was combined with exercise and/or training, there was differentiated protein expression in MAP kinase pathways. This indicates MAP kinase pathways have diverse control mechanisms in slow-twitch fibers.

A Study on the Architectural Meaning and Characteristics of L'Art Sacré Movement advocated by Marie Alain Couturie (마리 알랭 쿠튀리에가 주창한 성미술(L'Art Sacré) 운동의 건축적 의미와 특성 고찰)

  • This study aimed to find the architectural meaning and characteristics of L'Art Sacr? Movement advocated by Dominican Father Marie Alain Couturie. From 1936 till 1954 Father Couturier was the chief editor of the review L'Art Sacr? that became very influential among art critics no longer satisfied with what was considered outdated 19th century church interior decoration. Marie Alain Couturie was a French Dominican friar and Catholic priest who gained fame as a designer of stained glass windows. He was noted for his modern inspiration in the field of Sacred Art. Couturier's greatest ambition was to revive Christian art by appealing to the independent masters of his time. From these viewpoint, we investigated the background and process of the movement and analyzed the architectural meaning and characteristics which represented the Art Sacr? movement. The analyzed chapel buildings were as follows: 1) The Church of Notre-Dame de Toute Gr?ce du Plateau d'Assy, bringing together Braque, Matisse, Rouault, L?ger and Chagall, 2) The Chapel of Saint-Marie Rosaire by Henri Matisse, 3) The Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut and The Couvent de La Tourette by Le Corbusier, and 4) The Rothko Chapel by Mark Rothko and Philip Johnson. These L'Art Sacr? projects inscribedthemselveswithin what was the century's most serious attempt at the reintegration of Art and religious space. Courturier's interactions with artists and architects are traced and shown to have played a major role in the evolution of the priest's thinking and Church interior decoration. At the same time, Courturier's clear and vigorous L'Art Sacr? articles were both defining the theoretical basis of new vision and anticipating the renewal of the religious space.

Manufacturing of YBCO coated conductor deposited on RABiTS by pulsed laser deposition method (RABiTS 위에 PLD 방법으로 증착된 YBCO 초전도 박막 선재의 제조)

  • YBCO coated conductor is one of the most promising materials as a new generations wire especially for practical power applications. In this work, $YBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7}$ -$\delta$/(YBCO) coated conductors (CC) were deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) from buffer layers to superconducting layer on hi-axially textured metal tape. The oxide multilayer buffered substrate of architectures of $CeO_2$/$YSZ/Y_2$$O_3$ was fabricated by PLD at steady status. Then YBCO layer was deposited on RABiTS substrate by stationary and reel-to-reel (R2R) continuous process and we compared with deposition conditions of both processes. The degree of texture of each layer was investigated using X-ray diffraction including $\theta$-2$\theta$ scans, $\omega$-scans and $\Phi$-scans analysis. Their surface morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The FWHM of the X-ray $\Phi$-scans and $\Phi$-scans indicated that YBCO and buffer layers closely replicate the in-plane and out-of-plane texture of metal tape. Critical current (Ic) at 77 K, self-field of 75.8 A/cm-width, critical temperature (Tc) of 85 K, and critical current density (Ic) of 3.7 MA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ were measured from coated conductor deposited by stationary process. And coated conductor deposited by R2R continuous process had Ic of 57.5 A/cm-width, Tc of 86.5 K and Jc of 2.0 MA/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The film also exhibits a homogeneous and dense surface morphology.

Conservation and Pedestal Stability Estimation of the Bukji-ri Stone Pensive Bodhisattva of Bonghwa (봉화 북지리 석조반가상의 보존 및 받침대 안정성 평가)

  • The Bukji-ri Stone Pensive Bodhisattva of Bonghwa in the collection of Kyungpook National University Museum was transported to the National Museum of Korea for display in a special exhibition('Masterpieces of Early Buddhist Sculpture 100 BCE - 700 CE') and therefore underwent conservation ahead of the exhibition's start date. The stone sculpture had visibly encrusted surface dirt, granular disintegration and fissures upon arrival. Notably, a crack running obliquely across its lower half rendered the object unable to support its own weight without a pedestal, so one was created in order to maintain the sculpture in an upright position while on exhibition. The sculpture was further examined using a polarizing microscope and a stereoscopic microscope. SEM-EDS resulted in petrographic analysis of the stone's mineral composition and identification of its surface contaminants. Polarizing light microscopy confirmed biotite granite as the main mineral component of the object. Several urethane resins cast in round cross-sections were inserted into the newly made pedestal and stability tests were perform to measure the frictional force of the resins. An additional test was performed to compare urethane resin and epoxy resin, with results showing urethane to have a higher coefficient of friction. Utilizing a pedestal with urethane resin effectively ensured the stability of the Bukji-ri Stone Pensive Bodhisattva of Bonghwa during the aforementioned exhibition.

Characterization of Fluorocarbon Thin Films deposited by PECVD (PECVD로 증착된 불화 유기박막의 특성 평가)

  • Teflon-like fluorocarbon thin film was deposited by using difluoromethane$(CH_2F_2$) added with Ar, $O_2$, and $CH_4$ on Si, $SiO_2$, TEOS, and Al substrate. The deposited thin film was characterized by static contact angles for measuring hydrophobicity in various additive gas ratio. temperature, and working pressure. In case of addition with Ar, the static contact angles decreased as additive gas ratio and power increased. But the static contact angles increased as working pressure increased. Specially, super-hydrophobic surface was obtained using the powder-like fluorocarbon thin film above 2 Torr. Added with $O_2$, the static contact angles decreased as the $O_2$ ratio and working pressure increased. And the static contact angles did not change in 100W, but hydrophilic surface was obtained at 200W. In case of addition of CE$_4$, static contact angles dramatically increased in $CH_4/CH_2F_2$ ratio 5. And continuous static contact angles obtained above ratio 5. As compare with previous experiments by thermal evaporation, the fluorocarbon thin film by plasma polymerization was obtained very low hysteresis. This results shows more homogenous surface by plasma polymerization than thermal evaporation process.

THE BUDDHIST HERITAGE ON THE SILK ROAD: FROM GANDHARA TO KOREA

  • The Silk Route in ancient times served as a link between the World's greatest civilizations and as a source of knowledge, art, religion and philosophy. This network of ancient caravan paths formed the first bridge between East and West, where two different civilizations came in contact with their respective cultural traditions and religious beliefs, as well as their scientific and technological achievements. One of the main routes of the Great Silk Route passed through the Karakoram, linking Kashgar with Kashmir and the Gandhara regions. The Karakoram Highway connects the Chinese province with Pakistan and follows the ancient Silk Route, which connected the Heartlands of Asia with the Western fringes and further beyond the entire continent of Europe. Evidences of the history of humankind, ranging from Pre-historic times to the spread of Buddhism from South Asia to China and the Far East, is depicted in the rocky cliffs on the waysides and on rough boulders scattered in the upper valley of the Indus River and its tributaries. The ancient trade routes also carried scholars, teachers, missionaries and monks of different beliefs and practices, who met and exchanged ideas. The Buddhists as well as Zoroastrians and other missionaries all followed the Silk Route, leaving permanent footprints of their passage. The ancient greater Gandhara is situated in the North-West of the Indian Sub-continent, with the steep mountain ranges of the Karakoram, the Pamir and the Hindu-Kush bordering it and the dry areas of Central Asia to its rear. A number of races from Central Asia migrated to Gandhara because of its mild climate and plentiful farm products and fruits. This area was an entry point of Western Culture into India and at the same times the exit point of Indian Culture, including Buddhism, to the West. In Gandhara, the diffusion of different cultures developed an art form, during the 1-7th centuries CE commonly known after its geographic name as "Gandhara Art". The Buddhism's route of introduction into China originated in Gandhara, then reached in Korea and Japan and other countries. The fame of Gandhara however, rested on its capital, "Taxila" which was a great centre of learning. From the time of the Achaemenians, down through Muslim period, Gandhara continued to establish and maintain a link between East & West, as shown by material evidences recovered from Taxila and other Buddhist centres of Gandhara during the course of archaeological excavations.

Dielectric and Piezoelectric Properties of Li-Substituted $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})(Nb_{0.96}Sb_{0.04})O_3$ Ceramics (Li 치환에 따른 $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})(Nb_{0.96}Sb_{0.04})O_3$ 세라믹스의 유전 및 압전 특성)

  • 최근 유한연료의 고갈로 인해 세계 유가가 불안정 됨으로서 대체 에너지에 대한 연구가 많이 진행 되고 있다. 특히 압전 소자를 이용한 에너지 하베스팅은 압전 역효과를 이용한 것으로서 주변에서 무의미하게 버려지는 진동이나 바람, 열 에너지를 실 생활에 사용할 수 있는 전기 에너지로 변환할 수 있는 유망한 기술 중 하나이다. 이러한 에너지 하베스팅 기술은 일본과 같은 선진국에서 이미 지하철 및 일반 다리와 같이 진동이 극히 많은 곳에서 응용되고 있다. 이러한 에너지 하베스팅 기술을 응용 하려면 전압출력 계수($g_{33}$)가 높아야 한다. 이것은 압전 d 상수와 유전상수에 영향을 많이 받는 것으로 알려져 있다. 현재가지 응용되는 압전 하베스팅 조성은 Pb(Zr,Ti)$O_3$ (PZT)를 기초로한 세라믹이 응용되고 있다. Pb(Zr,Ti)$O_3$ (PZT) 세라믹은 Morpohotropic phase boundary(MPB)에서 전기기계 결합계수 (kp) 와 기계적 품질계수 (Qm) 이 각각 0.5와 500으로 우수한 특성을 나타낸다. 또한 큐리온도 (Tc) 도 $400^{\circ}C$로 온도 안정성 또한 높다. 하지만 $1000^{\circ}C$ 이상에서 소결하는 PbO는 소결 중 급격한 휘발로 환경적 오염 뿐 아니라 특성의 저하를 야기시킨다. 그래서 몇몇 나라에서는 그 사용을 제한하고 점차적으로 사용을 줄여 나가고 있는 동시에 PbO가 첨가되어 있지 않은 Lead-Free 세라믹의 연구가 많이 진행되고 있다. Lead-Free 세라믹 중 alkaline niobate를 기초로 한 페로브스카이트 구조의 ($Na_{0.5}K_{0.5})NbO_3$ (NKN) 은 PbO를 기초로 한 세라믹을 대체할 유망한 후보자 중 하나이다. 하지만 NKN세라믹의 K 성분의 조해성 및 고온에서의 휘발로 인해 일반 적인 소결 방법으로는 고밀도의 세라믹을 얻기 매우 어렵다. 그래서 Hot pressing, Hot forging, RTGG(Reactive Template Grain Growth), SPS(Spark plasma Sintering)와 같은 특별한 소결 법을 이용하거나 $K_8CuNb_4O_{23}$(KCN) 이나 $K_{5.4}Cu_{1.3}Ta_{10}O_{29}$(KCT) 등을 첨가하여 그 소결성을 향상 시키는 방법도 있다. 또한 압전 d상수를 향상 시키기 위해 $Nb_2O_5$나, $La_2CO_3$, $CeO_2$, $Li_2CO_3$ 등을 치환함으로써 압전 d상수를 향상 시켜 전압출력 계수를 높이는 연구 또한 많은 보고가 되어 있다. 특히 $Li_2CO_3$의 첨가는 일반 적인 소결 방법으로도 밀도의 조밀함을 향상 시켜 그에 따른 높은 유전율과 전기기계 결합계수, 압전 d상수를 가져 많은 연구가 되어지고 있다. 그래서 본 연구에서는 일반적인 ($K_{0.5}N_{0.5})_{1-x}Li_x(Nb_{0.96}Sb_{0.04})O_3$ + 0.2mol%$La_2O_3$ + 1.2mol%$K_8CuNb_4O_{23}$ 세라믹에 x(=Li) 치환에 따른 유전 및 압전특성을 조사하였다.
