  • This appendix deals with the Korean air interface standard, TTA-62, for CDMA Mobile Systems, (CMS) [1]-[2]. The standard has been set up by Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) which is a standardization organization in Korea [3]. This standard is an important specification that should be determined prior to the development of a digital cellular system. The CMS has been developed on the basis of this standard and the papers published in this special issue are the results of the CMS development. This appendix also describes the technical commonality of these papers. It covers the outline of the air interface and protocol specifications. The outline includes its major characteristics, radio protocol architecture, functionalties, and call processing. A comparison is also given between TTA-62 and IS-95[4], a North American digital cellular standard.

  • Power control (PC) on the reverse link of CDMA cellular system is important to increase system capacity. PC eliminates fluctuations in the received signal level and hence reduces the required signal-to-interference ratio. However, both perfect PC and imperfect PC depend on number of interferences as number of users, which by using smart antenna system can decrease number of interferences in any directions except interferences from the main beam direction. In this paper , number of elements in smart antenna system, which directly relates to the main beam pattern, is studied to find the effects on the outage probability , bit energy-to-interference density ratio (Eb/Io) and the capacities of both perfect and imperfect PC.

  • Presently, an inductor adapted at MMIC (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit) which is used for cellular phone or PHS operates at quasi-microwave range over 800 MHz. However, a W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) will use about 2 GHz range. Therefore magnetic film device should be compatible up to 2 GHz. We have deposited Co-Pd-Al-O system film using rf sputtering method which is expected up to 2 GHz, and investigated the effect of Pd content and magnetic field annealing. When Pd composition is 19%, Hk was 118 Oe, and ${\mu}$′showed flat frequency characteristics up to 1.5 GHz. The Q factor (=${\mu}$′/${\mu}$") was 23.3 at 1 GHz, 6.7 at 1.5 GHz and 1.5 at 2 GHz, respectively. Resonance frequency was 2 GHz. Therefore Co-Pd-Al-O thin film could be used at over 1 GHz, and also expected as an inductor material for wide band CDMA type cellular phone.

  • We propose and analyze a priority queuing scheme that gives priority in the same class of calls according to their total resource requirements (TRRs). The proposed scheme gives a higher priority to the calls that have a lower TRR over the calls that have a higher TRR. The numerical results show that the proposed priority queuing scheme provides better performance than the traditional queuing schemes in call blocking probability.

  • This study examined the effects of exposure to the electromagnetic field emitted by mobile phone on human cognitive function. Total volunteers were twenty and volunteers were separated in two groups. One is teenager group, and the other is adult group. Test was performed in the counterbalanced order(sham-real, real-sham). Subject remained blind to mobile phone status during the exam. The result showed that the exposure to the electromagnetic field significantly speeded up response time fur teenager group. This results suggest that exposure to the electromagnetic field emitted by cellular phones may have a mild facilitating effect on cognitive function in teenager group.

  • In this paper, the effect of soft handoff technique on CDMA cell coverage is analyzed in a lognormally shadowed channel, which uses the Hata propagation model, Also, the rate of increase for the cell coverage is analyzed by calculating the hard and soft handoff margin. When the outage probability is 0.02 and the standard deviation of the received signal is 2.5 dB in a lognormally shadowed channel, the transmit power of the mobile station which is located in the cell boundary is increased by the hard handoff margin of 5.13 dB and by the soft handoff margin of 3.68 dB, respectively. So, the rate of increase for the cell coverage is 1.39 in case of using the soft handoff technique. It is shown that if the (E$\_$b//N$\_$0/)$\_$req/ value is 7 dB, the cell coverage of the CDMA cellular system with soft handoff technique in city area is 3.33 km in case of the 850 MHz frequency and 1.36 km in case of the 1900 MHz frequency. Also, the accurate cell coverage with soft handoff technique is supported that could be serviced by the base-station in CDMA cellular system.

  • As cellular network technologies continue to evolve, various network standards coexist in most CDMA-based cellular networks. This means that mobile device users access mobile services over different network bandwidths according to the users' positions or the mobile devices' network access capabilities. Such differences of network bandwidths cause big differences in service response times. To address this problem, we present a framework called CANS (Context-Aware framework for mobile Navigation Services), which takes into account the user's network profile to adapt the contents for CDRG(Centrally Determined Route Guidance) navigation services for cellular phones. To the best of the authors' knowledge, CANS is the first context-aware framework to make mobile navigation services more feasible. The experimental results under commercial CDMA network show that CANS is able to provide similar service response times regardless of type of wireless network to which users connect by adapting the contents to network bandwidths.
