  • Ultra wideband (UWB) technologies have been developed to exploit a new spectrum resource in substances and to realize ultra-high-speed communication, high precision geolocation, and other applications. The energy of UWB signal is extremely spread from near DC to a few GHz. This means that the interference between conventional narrowband systems and UWB systems is inevitable. However, the interference effects had not previously been studied from UWB wireless systems to conventional mobile wireless systems sharing the frequency bands such as Cellular CDMA and Korean PCS. This paper experimentally evaluates the interference from two kinds of UWB sources, namely a direct-sequence spread-spectrum UWB source and an impulse radio UWB source, to a Cellular CDMA and K-PCS digital transmission system. The average frame error rate degradation of each system arc presented. From these experimental results, we show that in all practical cases UWB system can coexist with Cellular CDMA and K-PCS terminal without causing any dangerous interference.

  • A CDMA-based cellular mobile telecommunication system has already been developed and is expected to provide more stable mobile communication services for much more users than traditional analog mobile systems. As a natural course of development, the CDMA mobile system is expected to provide ISDN services in the near future. In this paper, we analyze several traffic control policies for the voice-data integrated traffic in the cellular CDMA system. We first select four admission control policies which take differences in traffic and QOS characteristics between voice and data into account, and then develop modelling and analysis techniques, which can be used directly to analyze the chosen control policies. Our approach is based on so-called threshold model. Numerical computation results obtained under the typical traffic situation are also given. Through these computation results we could tentatively conclude that the cutoff priority policy, which can provide the priority for handoff voice cells while effectively utilizing unused channels, seems to be most effective among the four policies.

  • In this paper, optimal parameters of a hopping pilot beacon are analyzed in a CDMA mobile cellular network. The hopping pilot beacon is used for inter-frequency handoff. It can reduce the number of pilot beacons needed for the inter-frequency handoff by transmitting neighbor frequency pilots periodically through a pilot beacon. The optimal parameters for transmission time and period of the hopping pilot bacon are derived by mathematical approach. It is highly recommended that the optimal values for the hopping pilot beacon under various operation environments.

  • In DS-CDMA cellular systems, using the same frequency channel at the adjacent cells simultaneously makes soft handoff possible. In soft handoff, mobiles use multiple radio resources for the space diversity of signal in the overlapped region. The previous traffic models of hard handoff are not applicable to the system with soft handoff due to switching radio channels in that region. The handoff rate can be calculated by the mobility of mobiles, which is a function of the size and shape of a cell, and the speed and density of the mobiles. In this paper, we propose an analytical traffic model to study the soft handoff rate. We assume that the system uses a two-way handoff scheme for practical purposes, which connects only two cells to a mobile during soft handoff. We performed a computer simulation to confirm the accuracy of the proposed soft handoff model. The simulation results show good agreement with the analytical model.

  • Traffic unbalance between uplink and downlink is one of the most notable characteristics in the next generation cellular mobile systems which provide multimedia services such as voice and video telephony, high-speed internet access, and mobile computing, etc. The CDMA/TDD system with unbalanced slot allocation between two links is a good solution for the traffic unbalance in this paper, we formulate the time slot and channel allocation problem for the CDMA/TDD systems in general multicell environments, which is to maximize the system capacity under the given traffic unbalance, and solve that problem by simulated annealing technique. Computational experiments show that the proposed scheme yields a good performance.

  • In this paper, we propose an optimal power control algorithm for CDMA cellular systems. The proposed power control algorithm is based on linear quadratic control theory. As the cellular system includes the changeability of system environment or various noise, Kalman filter is adapted to estimate the time-varying interference. This is the well-known linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) theory. Through this algorithm, power transmission of each mobile with optimal one is more realistic. Simulation results show a fast convergence rate to optimal power value, and a rapid decreasing outage probability.

  • Remez exchange algorithm was applied to realize an IF SAW filter for CDMA cellular phone systems. A SAW filter with withdrawal weighted transducers was simulated and then fabricated on 42.75.deg. ST-cut Quaritz wafer. Excellent agreement wasobtained between calculated andmeasured responses. Fabricated SAWfilterswere mounted on ceramic SMD package for reducing their size and volume. SAW filters were measured under matched circuit. As a result, 5 dB bandwidth of 1.32 MHz, 33dB bandwidth of 1.76 MHz, insertion loss of 13.8 dB and peak to peak ripple at passband of 0.26 dB were obtained. Linear group delay responses at passband were also obtained. These characteristics were good for practical use of IF SAW filter for CDMA system.

  • There are some transmission types on the reverse link of wideband DS-CDMA cellular system. The configurations of logical channels on the reverse link may be different dependent upon the transmission methods of reverse pilot or control signaling. In this paper, we present three transmission types on the wideband DS-CDMA reverse link; no-pilot system, pilot-channel aided system and pilot-symbol aided system. And we compare the performance of three systems in terms of capacity and cell coverage. The pilot-symbol aided system is shown to have the better performance than the pilot-channel aided system in both capacity and cell coverage.

  • Recently, due to the rapid technological progress, CDMA cellular system is widely used for voice, data and multimedia services. But the analysis for voice-data integrated traffic has not been done satisfactorily. Moreover, there is few research results for voice-data integrated traffic. In this paper, we propose an effective channel allocation algorithm for CDMA cellular system which serves voice-data integrated traffic. As for the proposed channel allocation algorithm, new calls and hand-off calls first attempt to connect micro-cell. We model the channel allocating scheme as a Birth-and-Death process. We reserve a few hand-off dedicated channels and calculate the blocking probability of hand-off calls varying the number of hand-off dedicated channels. Then we decide the number of hand-off dedicated channels satisfying the proper QoS(Quality of Service) and minimum blocking probability.
