Clinical Features and Extraintestinal Manifestations of Crohn Disease in Children

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical features and extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs) of Crohn disease (CD) in Korean pediatric patients. Methods: The medical records of 73 children diagnosed with CD were retrospectively reviewed. Data regarding baseline demographic and clinical characteristics, including CD phenotype at diagnosis based on the Montreal classification, and clinical features and course of EIMs were investigated. Results: Fifty-two (71.2%) of the patients were males. The mean age of the patients was 12.5 years. The mean follow-up period was 3.4 years. The disease location was ileal in 3 (4.1%) of the patients, colonic in 13 (17.8%), ileocolonic in 56 (76.7%). The clinical behavior was inflammatory in 62 (84.9%) of the patients, stricturing in 8 (11.0%), and penetrating in 3 (4.1%). Perianal abscesses or fistulas were found in 37 (50.7%) of the patients. EIMs observed during the study period were anal skin tag in 25 patients (34.2%), hypertransaminasemia in 20 (27.4%), peripheral arthritis in 2 (2.7%), erythema nodosum in 2 (2.7%), vulvitis in 1 (1.4%), uveitis in 1 (1.4%), and pulmonary thromboembolism in 1 (1.4%). Conclusion: Perianal diseases and manifestations were present in more than half of Korean pediatric CD patients at diagnosis. Inspection of the anus should be mandatory in Korean children with suspicious CD, as perianal fistulas, abscesses, and anal skin tags may be the first clue to the diagnosis of CD.

  • An electrical signals of a conventional radiation medical imaging sensor are obtained by charge integration method. In this study, the polycrystalline cadmium telluride(p-CdTe) film was fabricated by a thermal evaporation method for the photon counting sensor development with excellent resolution in low exposure dose. From the fabricated p-CdTe sensor, the physical properties(SEM, XRD) and the electrical properties(leakage current, x-ray sensitivity, SNR) were evaluated. As a result, the leakage current of below $5nA/cm^2$ and $7{\mu}C/cm^2-R$ of the X-ray sensitivity were showed in below $1V/{\mu}m$. In addition, the signal to noise ratio showed the values of above 5000 at operating voltage.

  • The study was carried out to investigate heavy metals of rainfall and soil at industrial, urban and rural area, and to estimate the relationship between rainfall and soil. Heavy metals of stemflow, throughfall and rainfall in Pinus thunbergii and Quercus spp were ordered Zn>Cu>Pb>Cd in industrial area, and Zn>Pb>Cu>Cd in urban area. All heavy metals were detected high in industrial areas, and especially those of industrial area were high in stemflow. Heavy metals in soil by distance from stem were highest in 20cm distance from stem. Soil heavy metals in survey sites were the same order as those of rainfall. The correlation of heavy metals between rainfall and soil were positive, the regression obtained was as follows ; Zn was Y=7.79+4.78X($r=0.8685^{**}$), Pb was Y=7.90+4.53X($r=0.7242^*$) and Cu was Y=3.89+3.91X($r=0.8658^{**}$).

Selection of Plant Species for Phytoremediation of Heavy Metal (As and Cd) Contaminated Soil using Hydroponic Culture (수경재배에 의한 중금속 (As 및 Cd) 오염토양의 식물상 복원공법 적용 식물종 선별)

  • Phytoremediation presents a low-carbon and eco-friendly solution for heavy metal-contaminated soils, which pose great health and environmental risks to humans and ecosystems. A hydroponic culture was used to quantitatively assess the phytoremediation potential of plant species to remediate As or Cd-contaminated soil in field application. This study examined the growth, uptake, and distribution of Cd in the roots and shoots of Phalaris arundinacea and Brassica juncea in hydroponic conditions with Cd concentrations ranging from 0 to 20 mg/L for 10 days. Additionally, Aster koraiensis and Pteris multifida were cultivated in hydroponic conditions containing As concentrations ranging from 0 to 40 mg/L for 10 days. The concentrations of Cd in the above-ground part and root tissues of P. arundinacea and B. juncea reached a maximum of 147.7 and 1926.7 mg/kg-D.W.(Dry Weight), and 351.6 and 11305.5 mg/kg-D.W., respectively. Bioconcentration factor (BCF) for P. arundinacea and B. juncea were 68.9 and 122.3, respectively. Both species exhibited a translocation factor (TF) of less than 0.1, indicating their eligibility for phytostabilization. Aster koraiensis exhibited significant As accumulation of 155.1 and 1306.7 mg/kg D.W. in the above-ground part and root, respectively. However, this accumulation resulted with substantial weight loss and the manifestation of toxic symptoms. P. multifida exhibited higher accumulation of As (345.1 mg/kg-D.W.) in the fronds than in the roots (255.4 mg/kg-D.W.), corresponding to BCF values of 18.6 and 7.6, respectively, and a TF greater than 1.2. A TF value greater than 1.0 indicates that P. multifida is a viable option for phytoextraction.

  • Backgroud : MUC1 mucin is a heavily glycosylated large glycoprotein and is expressed aberrantly in carcinoma. CD44 is polymorphic family of cell surface glycoproteins participating in cell-cell adhesion and modulation of the cell-matrix interaction. MUC1 mucin and CD44 expression have been implicated in a tumor invasion and metastasis in certain malignancies. In this study, the expression of MUC1 and the standard form of CD44 (CD44s) was examined in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods : Immunohistochemical staining using monoclonal antibodies including MUC1 glycoprotein and CD44s was performed on 80 NSCLC surgical specimens. The association between MUC1 and CD44s expression and the histological type and tumor stage was investigated. Results : Depolarized MUC1 expression in more than 10% of cancer cells was found in 12 (27.9%) out of 43 squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) and 12 (32.4%) out of 37 adenocarcinomas (ACs). It was not associated with the tumor histological type and the TNM-stage in SCCs. Depolarized MUC1 expression correlated with the N-stage in ACs (p=0.036). CD44s was expressed in 36 (83.7%) out of 43 SCCs and 14 (37.8%) out of 37 ACs. Reduced CD44s expression correlated with the N-stage (p=0.031) and the TNM-stage (p=0.006) in SCCs. Conclusions : Depolarized MUC1 expression was related to the nodal stage in NSCLC adenocarcinoma. Reduced CD44s expression was related to nodal involvement and the TNM-stage in squamous cell carcinoma. This suggests that MUC1 and CD44s expression in NSCLC might play important roles in tumor progression and cap be used as prognostic variables.

Purification and Characterization of Cyclodextrinase from Bacillus stearothermophilus KJ 16 (Bacillus stearothermophilus KJ16이 생산하는 Cyclodextrinase의 정제와 효소특성)

  • Cyclodextrinase from B. stearothemophilus KJ16 that can produce both cyclodextrin(CD) glucanotransferase and cyclodextrinase was purified 87.6-fold with 7% yield by ammonium sulfate precipitation, DEAE-cellulose chromatog-raphy, Sephadex G-100 chromatography, and FPLC. The molecular weight of the purified enzyme was about 68,000 dalton by SDS-PAGE. The optimal pH and temperature were 6.0 and 55$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The enzyme was stable at 5$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in the pH range of 5.5 and 8.5. The enzyme activity was inhibited strongly by mercaptoethanol, di-thiothreitol, p-chloromercuribenzoate, N-bromosuccinimide, $Cu^{+2}$and $Hg^{+2}$. The purified enzyme hydrolyzed CDs with$\gamma$-CD>$\beta$-CD>$\alpha$-CD. The enzyme also hydrolyzed linear maltodextrins and polysaccharides, but the rates of hyd-rolysis for such substrates were slow as compared to that for $\gamma$-CD. The final degradation products with all substrates were maltose and glucose. Maltose was not further hydrolyzed.

  • The contents of Pb and CD measured with the barks of Pinus densiflora in Seoul area, Yangjaedong area near the Kyungbu-highway, Mt. Keryong and Mt. Seolak area, from Sep. to Ock. in 1988. Pb contents in Seoul area were 17.8 ppm at Changkyungkung, 17.1 ppm at Chongamdong, 13.2 ppm at Mt. Kwanak, 7.6 ppm at Mt. Dobong and 3.7 ppm at Mt. Surak. Except Mt. Kwanak, the difference between areas of central and mountains in Seoul were high significant. Mt Seolak area also showed variations in Pb contents from 16.8 ppm to 32.1 ppm according to studied sites. Cd contents in Seoul area were 0.47 ppm at Changkyungkung, 0.65 ppm at Chongamdong, 0.61 ppm at Mt. Kwanak, 0.52 ppm at Mt. Dobong, 0.47 ppm at Mt. Surak. Therefore, Cd contents in Seoul area exhibited more variations between sampling plots than between the areas of central and mountains in Seoul. Mt Seolak area also showed variations from 0.20 ppm to 0.34 ppm in Cd contents, and it was the lowest in all the studied area.

Fabrication and optoelectrical properties for cdSSe photoconductive cell by using print/sintering (인쇄/소결 방법에 의한 CdSSe 광전도 셀 제작과 광전기적 특성)

  • 인쇄/소결 방법으로 가시영역에서 광감도가 매우 큰 CdSSe 다결정 후막을 만들고 이를 이용하여 광전도 젤을 제작하였다. 후막의 낱알 크기는 $5{\mu}m$ 정도이였다. 광전도 셀은 소결 촉진제로 첨가한 $cucl_2$ 양이 CdSSe 1 g 당 3.06~0.10 mg 정도이변 감도, 광전류와 암전류의 비율이 각각 0.7과 $10^5$ 이상을 나타내었고, Cds 와 CdSe 의 질량비가 1:0, 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, 5:5일 때 응답파장은 각각 500nm, 520nm, 540nm, 570nm, 620nm, 660nm였다. 또한 주파수 특성을 나타내는 응답시간은 오름시간과 감쇠시간이 각각 30관 20ms 정도 이였으며 최대허용 소비 전력은 80mw 이상이었다. 이상과 같이 인쇄/소결 방법으로 제작된 광전도 셀은 $cucl_2$ 양이 CdSSe 1g 당 0.06~0.10 mg 정도 주입되면 센서로써 좋은 특성을 나타내었다.

Photocurrent Study on the Splitting of the Valence Band and Growth of $CdIn_2Te_4$ Single Crystal by Bridgman method (Bridgman법에 의해 성장된 $CdIn_2Te_4$ 단결정의 가전자 갈라짐에 대한 광전류 연구)

  • A p-$CdIn_2Te_4$ single crystal has been grown by the Bridgman method without a seed crystal in a tree-stage vertical electric furnace. From photocurrent measurements, it was found that three peaks, A, B, and C, corresponded to an intrinsic transition due to the band-to-band transition from the valence band states ${\Gamma}_7(A),\;{\Gamma}_6(B),\;and\;{\Gamma}_7(C)$ to the conduction band state ${\Gamma}_6$, respectively. Also, the valence band splitting of the $CdIn_2Te_4$ crystal has been confirmed by photocurrent spectroscopy. The crystal field splitting and the spin orbit splitting were obtained to be 0.2360 and 0.1119 eV, respectively. Also, the temperature dependence of the band gap energy of the $CdIn_2Te_4$ crystal has been driven as the following equation of $E_g(T)\;=E_g(0)\;-\;(9.43\;{\times}\;10^{-3})T^2/(2676\;+\;T)$. In this equation, the Eg(0) was estimated to be 1.4750, 1.7110, and 1.8229 eV at the valence band state A, B, and C, respectively. The band gap energy of the p-$CdIn_2Te_4$ at room temperature was determined to be 1.2023 eV.

Enhanced Photocurrent from CdS Sensitized ZnO Nanorods

  • Structure and optical properties of cadmium sulphide-zinc oxide composite nanorods have been evaluated by suitable characterization techniques. The X-ray diffraction spectrum contains a series of peaks corresponding to reflections from various sets of lattice planes of hexagonal ZnO as well as CdS. The above observation is supported by the Micro-Raman spectroscopy result. The optical reflectance spectra of CdS-ZnO is compared with that of ZnO where we observe an enhanced absorption and hence diminished reflection from CdS-ZnO compared to that from only ZnO. A very small intensity of the visible photoluminescence peak observed at 550 nm proves that the ZnO nanorods have very low concentrations of point defects such as oxygen vacancies and zinc interstitials. The photocurrent in the visible region has been significantly enhanced due to deposition of CdS on the surface of the ZnO nanorods. CdS acts as a visible sensitizer because of its lower band gap compared to ZnO.
