Adsorption and precipitation of cadmium (Cd) could be dependent on rate of P addition and Cd level in soil. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine how addition rate of P affect mechanisms of Cd immobilization such as adsorption and precipitation in different levels of Cd in soil. Arable soils were spiked with inorganic Cd ($CdCl_2$) to give a total Cd concentration of 10, 100, and $1,000mg\;Cd\;kg^{-1}$. Monopotassium phosphate ($KH_2PO_4$, MPP) was selected as phosphate material and mixed with the pretreated arable soil at the rates of 0, 800, 1,600 and $3,200mg\;P\;kg^{-1}$. The mixture soils were incubated at $25^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks in dark condition. Soil pH decreased with increasing MPP addition rate in all levels of Cd but negative charge of soil increased, thereby reducing 1 M $NH_4OAc$ extractable Cd. Soil solutions were undersaturated with respect to $CdCO_3$ and $Cd_3(PO_4)_2$ with all P addition rate in soil with low Cd level (${\leq}100mg\;Cd\;kg^{-1}$) but supersaturated in soil with high Cd level ($1,000mg\;Cd\;kg^{-1}$). From the above results, Cd solubility was controlled by precipitation of Cd minerals such as $CdCO_3$ and $Cd_3(PO_4)_2$ in soil with high Cd level but by Cd adsorption induced by increase in negative charge of soil with low level of Cd.
We studied the effect of cadmium on chlorophylls and rubisco activation in Canavalia ensiformis L. leaves. Chlorophyll levels were reduced by 5.0 ${\mu}$M Cd. Rubisco activity at 5.0 ${\mu}$M Cd was significantly smaller than that at no treatment. Rubisco Content showed patterns of change similar to rubisco activity. These data suggest that rubisco activity was associated with an amount of rubisco protein, and that the activation and induction of rubisco is inhibited by Cd. The degree of intensity of 50 and 14.5 kD polypeptides identified as the large and small subunit of rubisco by SDS-PAGE analysis at 5.0 ${\mu}$M Cd was significantly lower than that at control, indicating Cd had a e f-fect on both subunits. Under the assumption that effects of Cd on rubisco may be r elated to rubisco activase, in addition to, its activity and content we re determined . The rubisco activase activity at 5.0 ${\mu}$M Cd was more decreased than the control. A similar change pattern was also observed in content of rubisco activase. Remarkable differences in the intensitiy of both the 45 kD and 41 kD band were found between at control and Cd-treatment. These results suggest that the change in the levels of rubisco activase leads to a subsequent alter action of rubisco levels.
This study examined the effects of dietary ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin (${\beta}CD$) on the cholesterol of blood and tissues of swine. Thirty six male castrated swine ($Landrace{\times}Yolkshire{\times}Duroc$) weighing 50 kg were randomly assigned to one of four dietary groups until their weight reached 110 kg. The groups were: basal diet without ${\beta}CD$ (control) and basal diets containing 1.5%, 3.0%, or 5.0% ${\beta}CD$. Diets and water were offered ad libitum. No significant difference was found between treatments in terms of feeding performance measured by daily intake, daily weight gain, and feed efficiency. Addition of ${\beta}CD$ to the diets significantly reduced total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol levels in swine blood, particularly in the group receiving 5.0% ${\beta}CD$, which showed decreases (p<0.05) of 21.9%, 55.6% and 27.7%, respectively. Cholesterol levels in back fat, loin, belly and ham portions of swine fed ${\beta}CD$ significantly differed (p<0.05) from controls, especially in the 5.0% ${\beta}CD$-fed group, with reductions of 26.0%, 27.5%, 17.9% and 18.3%, respectively. These results suggested that the addition of ${\beta}CD$ to the diet of swine could reduce their body cholesterol by decreasing the migration of cholesterol through the blood.

Purpose : This study aimed to determine the frequencies of $CD4^+CD25^+$ T cells in donor graft and peripheral blood $CD4^+CD25^+$ T cells in recipients after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and their association with graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Methods : Seventeen children who underwent HSCT were investigated. $CD4^+CD25^+$ T cells in samples from donor grafts and recipient peripheral blood were assessed by flow cytometry at 1 and 3 months after transplantation. Results : $CD4^+CD25^+$ T cell frequencies in the grafts showed no significant difference between patients with and without acute GVHD (0.90% vs. 1.06%, P=0.62). Absolute $CD4^+CD25^+$ T cell number in grafts were lower in patients with acute GVHD than in those without acute GVHD ($6.18{\times}10^5/kg$ vs. $25.85{\times}10^5/kg$, P=0.09). Patients without acute GVHD showed a significant decrease in peripheral blood $CD4^+CD25^+$ T cell percentage at 3 months compared to those at 1 month after HSCT (2.11% vs. 1.43%, P=0.028). However, in patients with acute GVHD, $CD4^+CD25^+$ T cell percentage at 3 months was not different from the corresponding percentage at 1 month after HSCT (2.47% vs. 2.30%, P=0.5). Conclusion : The effect of frequencies of $CD4^+CD25^+$ T cells in donor grafts on acute GVHD after HSCT could not be identified, and the majority of peripheral blood $CD4^+CD25^+$ T cells in patients who underwent HSCT may be activated T cells related to acute GVHD rather than regulatory T cells. Further studies with additional markers for regulatory T cells are needed to validate our results.

Purpose: Cathepsin D(CD) is a lysosomal acid proteinase that is related to malignant progression, invasion, and a poor prognosis in several tumors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic clinical significance of CD and p53 expression in pretreatment biopsy specimens from patients with locally advanced rectal cancer who were treated with preoperative chemoradiation. Materials and Methods: Eighty-nine patients with locally advanced rectal cancer(cT3/T4 or N+) were included in this study. Preoperative chemoradiation consisted of a dose of 50.4 Gy of pelvic radiation and two concurrent cycles of administration of 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin. Surgery was performed six weeks after chemoradiation. CD and p53 expression in pretreatment formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor biopsy specimens were assessed by immunohistochemical staining using a CD and p53 monoclonal antibodies. The threshold value for a positive stain in tumor tissue and stromal cells was 1+ intensity in 10% of the tumors or stromal cells, respectively. Results: Positive CD expression was found in 57(64%) of the tumors and 32(35%) of the stromal cell specimens. There was no association with CD expression of the tumor or stromal cells and patient characteristics. There was a correlation between tumor CD expression with stromal cell CD expression(p=0.01). Overexpression of p53 was not a significant prognostic factor. The 5-year overall survival(OS) and disease-free survival(DFS) rates were not different between tumor CD-negative and positive patient biopsy samples(69% vs. 65%, 60% vs. 61%, respectively). The 5-year OS rates in the tumor-negative/stromal cell-negative, tumor-negative/stromal cell-positive, tumor-positive/stromal cell-negative and tumor-positive/stromal cell-positive biopsy samples were 75%, 28%, 62%, and 73%, respectively. Stromal cell staining only without positive tumor staining demonstrated the worst overall survival prognosis for patients(p=0.013). Conclusion: Overexpression of p53 in rectal biopy tissue was not associated with prognostic significance. In the pretreatment biopsy specimens, an exclusive increase in CD expression in stromal cells without tumor expression was related to poor overall survival in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer treated with preoperative chemoradiation.
The objective of this study is to investigate the removal characteristics of cadmium(Cd) and lead(Pb) by adsorption on red mud and to study the adsorption characteristics of Cd and Pb using red mud activated by acid treatment and calcination. The adsorption of Cd and Pb on red mud was significantly achieved within 1hour and equilibrated after 5 hours. The adsorption capacity of Cd and Pb on red mud increased with increasing pH. The neutralization of red mud by distilled water or acid and the activation of red mud by acid treatment or calcination decreased the adsorption capacity of Cd and Pb on red mud, suggesting that Cd and Pb could be effectively eliminated by adsorption on red mud without any pretreatment or modification. Both Langmuir and Freundlich models were successfully applied to describe the adsorption behavior of Cd and Pb on red mud. The $q_m$ of Langmuir adsorption model and $K_F$ of Freundlich adsorption model were 5.230mg/g and 1.118mg/g for Cd and 22.222mg/g and 7.241mg/g for Pb, respectively.
The effect of $Cd^{2+}$ on stomatal apertures of epidermal strips and intact leaves in Commelina communis L. was investigated. Cadmium stimulated stomatal opening. The stomata, treated with 100 $\mu$M $Cd^{2+}$ opened to a degree of about 8.38 fm, but the stomata, treated with no cadmium opened to 3.74 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In order to show that there was no mechanical or osmotic impediment preventing the stomata in the epidermal strips, salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (ABA) were used. The treatment of 100 $\mu$M SA and 1 $\mu$M ABA inhibited 14% and 28% of stomatal opening, respectively. Other heavy metals such as $Al^{3+} and Ag^{2+}$ were also used to investigate the effect of the stomatal apertures. The treatment of $Al^{3+} and Ag^{2+}$ also stimulated 19% and 41% of stomatal opening. To understand how cadmium open stomata, the effect of cadmium on the K+ influx into the epidermal strips was investigated. $Cd^{2+}$, SA, ABA inhibited 98%, 28%, 34% of K+ uptake respectively. 3-weeks old Commelina was transferred to and grown in Hoagland solution (0,5 mM $Cd^{2+}$, 10 mM $Cd^{2+}$) for 4 days and stomatal conductance were measured. The treatment of 5 mM $Cd^{2+}$ and 10 mM $Cd^{2+}$ showed about 51% and 70% inhibition of stomatal conductance, respectively Therefore, it could be concluded that stomata in epidermal strips and intact leaves behaved differently and cadmium- stimulated stomatal opening was due to the result of cadmium uptake into the epidermal strips instead of K+. WBC, Lymphocyte, CD4+ T cell in the blood, spleen, axillary node and CD8+ T cell in the blood, spleen and axillary node were determined. The results was as follows: 1. WBC count in blood was significantly decrcased in the control, sample I, II, III groups as compared with the normal group. 2. Lymhocyte count in the blood was significantly decreased in the control, sample I, II groups as compared with the normal group. 3. CD4+ T cell count in the blood was significantly increased dose-dependently in the sample I, II, III groups as compared with the normal group. 4. CD4+ T cell count in the spleen was significantly increased in the sample I, II, III groups as compared with the normal group. 5. CD4+ T cell count in the axillary node was significantly increased in the sample III group as compared with the normal group, however significantly decreased in the sample I, II groups as compared with the normal group. 6. CD8+ T cell count in the blood was significantly increased in the sample III groups as compared with the normal group. 7. CD8+ T cell count in the spleen was significantly increased in the sample I, II, III groups as compared with the normal group. but there was no differences in the sample groups. 8. CD8+ T cell count in the axillary node was decreased in the sample I, II groups as compared with the normal group.
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common alimentary malignancies. In this study, the antitumor activity of activated human natural killer (NK) cells against human colorectal cancer was evaluated in vivo. Human NK cells are the key contributors of innate immune response and the effective functions of these cells are enhanced by cytokines. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were cultured with interleukin-2 (IL-2)-containing medium for 14 days and resulted in enriched NK cell population. The resulting populations of the cells comprised 7% $CD3^+CD4^+$ cells, 25% $CD3^+CD8^+$ cells, 13% $CD3^-CD8^+$ cells, 4% $CD3^+$CD16/$CD56^+$ cells, 39% $CD3^+$CD16/$CD56^-$ cells, and 52% $CD3^-$CD16/$CD56^+$ cells. Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-$\alpha$), interferon gamma (IFN-$\gamma$), IL-2, IL-4, and IL-5 transcripts of the activated NK cells were confirmed by RT-PCR. In addition, activated NK cells at doses of 2.5, 5 and 10 million cells per mouse inhibited 10%, 34% and 47% of SW620-induced tumor growth in nude mouse xenograft assays, respectively. This study suggests that NK cell-based immunotherapy may be used as an adoptive immunotherapy for colorectal cancer patients.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary vitamin E levels on the enzymes such as superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) and glutathione S-transferase (G57) involved in antioxidative defense system and lipid peroxidation in brain of cadmium administered rats. Sprague-Dawely male rats weighing $60\pm5g$ were divided into control and experimental groups. The experimental groups were divided into Cd-0E(vitamin E free diet), Cd-40E(40mg vitamin E/kg diet) and Cd-400E(400mg vitamin E/kg diet) according to the level of vitamin E supplementation. After each group was fed diet ad libitum for 2 or 4 weeks, 2.5mg cadmium per kg body weight was injected intraperitoneally once a day for 4 days. The rats were sacrificed for examination on the next day after the last injection of cadmium. The results are as follows: SOD activities of rat brain were lower in Cd-0E, but had a similar tendency to Cd-40E, Cd-400E groups compared with control group. GSH-Px acivities of rat brain were decreased in Cd-400E, Cd-40E and Cd-0E groups. GST activities of rat brain were decreased in Cd-0E, Cd-40E groups and not significantly different in Cd-400E compared with control group. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS) of rat brain was increased in Cd-0E, Cd-40E, Cd-400E in that order, TBARS was lower in Cd-40E, and Cd-400E by 28.8% and 44%, respectively, than Cd-0E group. The present result suggests that high level of dietary vitamin E protects against lipid peroxidative damage in rat induced by cadmium.
