This study compared the effects of varying lipid content and dietary concentration of a lipid-encapsulated (LE) ZnO product to those of native ZnO and thereby to find insights into optimal lipid coating and dosage of the Zn supplement. A total of 192 21-d-old weanling pigs were allotted to 48 pens, after which each six pens received a ZnO-free basal diet supplemented with 125 ppm ZnO (100 ppm Zn; BASAL), 2,500 ppm Zn as native ZnO (HIGH), or 100 or 200 ppm Zn as LE ZnO (LE-100 or LE-250) containing 8%, 10%, or 12% lipid [LE-8%, LE-10%, or LE-12%, respectively; $2{\times}3$ factorial arrangement within the LE-ZnO diets (LE-ALL)] for 14 d. Forty pigs were killed at the end for histological and biochemical examinations. None of ADG, ADFI, gain:feed, and fecal consistency score differed between the LE-ALL and either of the BASAL and HIGH groups. Hepatic and serum Zn concentrations were greater (p <0.05) in the HIGH vs. LE-ALL group, but did not differ between LE-ALL and BASAL, between LE-100 and -250, or among LE-8%, -10%, and -12% groups. Villus height (VH), crypt depth (CD), and the VH:CD ratio in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum did not differ between the LE-ALL and either of the BASAL and HIGH groups, except for a greater CD in the duodenum in the LE-ALL vs. HIGH group. Additionally, VH and CD in the duodenum and VH:CD in the jejunum were greater in the LE-250 vs. LE-100 group. Specific activities of sucrase, maltase, and leucine aminopeptidase in these intestinal regions and those of amylase and trypsin in the pancreas were not influenced by the lipid content or dietary concentration of LE ZnO and also did not differ between the LE-ALL and either of the BASAL and HIGH groups, except for a greater pancreatic amylase activity in the former vs. HIGH group. In conclusion, the present results indicate that the LE ZnO, regardless of its lipid percentage or supplementation level examined in this study, has no significant effect on growth performance, fecal consistency, or digestive enzyme activities of weanling pigs under the experimental conditions.

Objectives: Prenatal cadmium (Cd) exposure may be associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the relationship between Cd exposure during gestation and ADHD at 6 years of age. Methods: As part of an ongoing cohort study (the Environment and Development of Children study), 479 mother-child pairs from Seoul, Korea were included for analysis between 2008 and 2011. The whole blood concentration of Cd was analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The parents were surveyed about ADHD behaviors in their children at age 6. Multivariable linear regression models were used to investigate the relationship between prenatal exposure to Cd and ADHD at 6 years of age. Results: Increased prenatal Cd concentrations were associated with increased scores for ADHD for girls, but not for boys, at age 6. A 2-fold increase in the prenatal Cd level was significantly associated with a 22.3% (95% confidence interval, 11.6 to 34.1) increase in ADHD in girls at 6 years of age, as indicated by the linear regression model. Conclusions: Our results identified significant associations between prenatal Cd exposure and ADHD scores in 6-year-old girls.
Object : Gliosis becomes a physical and mechanical barrier to axonal regeneration. Reactive gliosis induced by hypoxic brain injury is involved with up-regulation of CD81 and GFAP. The current study was to examine the effect of the Angelica Sinens on CD81 and GFAP regulation after hypoxic brain injury in the astrocyte. Methods : MTT assay was performed to examine cell viability, and cell based ELISA, western blot and PCR were used to detect the expression of CD81 and GFAP. Results : The following results were obtained: 1. Using ELISA, western blot and PCR from the astrocyte after hypoxic injury, CD81 and GFAP expression was seen to have increased. 2. After the administration of Angelica Sinens extract to astrocyte following hypoxic injury, CD81 and GFAP expression was down regulated significantly. The water extract of Angelica Sinens prevented cell destruction by hypoxic induced with $CoCl_2$. Conclusion : These results indicate that Angelica Sinens could suppress reactive gliosis, which disturbs astrocyte regeneration after hypoxic brain injury by controlling the expression of CD81 and GFAP.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Samjawhadam-jeon (SJHDJ; 三子化痰煎) on immune cells in OVA-induced asthmatic mice. Material and Methods : C57BL/6 mice were injected, inhaled and sprayed with OVA for 12 weeks (four times a week) for asthma induction. Two experimental groups were treated with different concentrations of SJHDJ group (400 mg/kg) extracts and cyclosporin A (10 mg/kg) for the latter 8 weeks. At the end of the experiment, the mouse lung. peripheral lymph node (PLN) and spleen were removed and immune cells were analyzed by flow cytometer. Results : Lung weight, total cells in lung, PLN, and spleen of the SJHDJ group decreased significantly compared with that of the control group. Number of $CD3e^+/CD69^+$, $CD3e^+/DX5^+$ cells in lung, PLN and spleen, number of $CD3^+$ cells in PLN and spleen, number of $CD3e^-/CCR3^+$ cells in lung and PLN, and number of $B220^+/IgE^+$ cells in PLN of the SJHDJ group decreased compared with that of the control group. Number of $CD4^+/CD25^+$ cells in PLN and spleen of the SJHDJ group increased compared with that of the control group. Conclusion : These results demonstrate that SJHDJ will be a desirable alternative therapy for allergic asthma by inhibiting the expression of immune cells.

The abnomal responseses on growth and morphology of attached diatoms by various heavy metals were studied. Ulnaria ulna (Nitzsch) Compère was employed as experimental species and exposed to the five heavy metals such as Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, and As with four concentrations (0, 0.01, 0.1, and 2 mg L-1), respectively. The samples of Ulnaria ulna were examined on the changes of cell growth and teratological forms on the 7th, 14th, 21th, and 28th day, respectively, after exposure to the heavy metals. The samples exposed to the highest concentration, 2.0 mg L-1, of all the heavy metals showed the most obvious decreases of growth. The samples exposed to Cd (μ=0.049day-1) and As (μ=0.048day-1) showed the highest decreasing rate of growth (p=0.021(Cd), p=0.002(As)) and the highest morphological changes of diatom valves were also samples exposed to Cd (10.41%) and As (10.13%) (p=0.009 (Cd), p=0.005(As)). In contrast, Pb induced the lowest decreasing rate (μ=0.090 day-1) and the least change in valve morphology (3.31%). The Cd and As showed relatively stronger effects on growth rates compared to Cu, Zn, and Pb. For the percentage of emergence of morphological species by the type, the highest percentage were observed in sampled exposed to type 1 (43.4%) and followed by type 2 (29.1%). The type 2 and 4 were most abundant in samples exposed to Zn and Pb while the type 3 was most abundant in Cd and As. The Cu induced only type 1, suggesting that the frequency of emergence of each type varied among hevay metals. This research suggests that the degrees of abnomal changes on growth rate and valve morphology of Ulnaria ulna can be used as a bioindicater species for heavy metal contamination in freshwater.
Objectives : The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of Trichosanthis Radix extract (TRE) on the proliferation and activation of eosinophils which were prepared from lung cells of asthma-induced mice by ovalbumin (OVA) treatment. Methods : C57BL/6 mouse was exposed to OVA three times a week for 6 weeks. The mouse lung tissues were dissected out, chopped and dossiciated with collagenase (1 $\mu$g/ml). Eosinophils were activated by rmIL-3/rmIL-5 co-treatments. The lung cells were treated with TRE, incubated for 48 hr at 37$^{\circ}C$, and analyzed by flow cytometer, ELISA and RT-PCR methods Results : To measure cytotoxicity, mouse lung fibroblast cells (mLFCs) were pretreated with various concentrations of TRE. TRE at 100 $\mu$g/ml, the highest concentration, examined did not have any cytotoxic effects on mLFCs. In FACS analysis, number of granulocyte/lymphocyte, CD3e-/CCR3+, CD3e+/CD69+, CD4+/CD8+ T cells in asthma-induced lung cells were significantly decreased by TRE treatment compared to the control group. But CD4+/CD25+ T cells were not examined significant change in lung cells treated with TRE. In ELISA analysis, production levels of IL-3, IL-5, IL-13 and histamine in asthma-induced lung cells, which were induced by rIL-3 plus rmIL-5 co-treatment, were significantly decreased by TRE treatment. Conclusions : The present data suggested that Trichosanthis Radix on the inhibition of parameters associated with asthma responses in eosinpophils, and thus implicate the possibility for the clinical application of Trichosanthis Radix.
This study was carried out to characterize the behavior and sources of particulate trace metal in Daegu city. TSP (Total Suspended Particulate matter) was collected by filters on High Volume Air Sampler from the four areal (reference, residential, commercial, industrial area). The moult were analyzed by AAS after preliminary treatment. The average centration trend of trace metals contained in TSP was shown as follows : Fe > Cu > Pb > Mn > Ni > Cr > Cd. The trace metals showed the highest concentration in the industrial area. This study showed the seasonal variation of trace metals. Fe and Mn showed high concentration in spring, whereas Cr, Ni, Cd and Pb showed high concentration in winter. Also this study showed the regional variation of trace metals. The order of the average concentration of trace metals was : industrial > commercial > residential > reference area. Using Mn as a reference element, the enrichment factor analysis were used for identifying the trace element contributors. The enrichment factors of Cr, Fe < 10 were considered to have a significant dust and soil source and termed nonenriched. Pb, Cd, Cu >>10 were enriched and had a significant fraction which was contributed by anthropogenic sources.
This study was carried out to research on the heavy metal contents of domestic and imported medicinal herbs. The heavy metals contents in 116 samples of 51 types of medicinal herbs were measured by using a modified Monier-Williams, mercury analyzer and inductively coupled plasma spectrometer(ICP). The heavy metal contents of medicinal herbs were as follows; Hg: 0.010(domestic: 0.010, imported: 0.010), Pb: 0.380(0.311, 0.449), Cd: 0.080(0.101, 0.059), As: 2.085(1.845, 2.324), Mn: 31.564(33.844, 29.283), Zn: 15.436(18.703, 12.168), Cu: 3.406(3.374, 3.437), Fe: 134.944(108.327, 161.561) by ppm unit. The measured values of Pb and Cd of domestic and imported medicinal herbs showed lower levels than the recommended levels of those in medicinal herbs by WHO/PHARM (Pb: not more than 10 ppm, Cd: not more than 0.3 ppm). Finally, this results will be used as a basic data for the future legislation on the regulation and control of heavy metal contents of medicinal herbs.
We have investigated the crystal properties of the Cd0.96Zn0.04Te(CZT) films evaporated on the Si(100) substrates by Elecctron Beam Evaporator(EBE) techique. The compositions of the As-preared films were different about 4% of atomic ratio, The films stucture was observad to be polycrystalline in cubic phase. Diffraction peaks were notable at the substrate temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. The reflectance measurements yield $E_1$=3.25~3.29 eV $E_1$+${\Delta}_1$=3.76~3.83 eV and $E_2$=5.08 eV,showing that the films wear in cubic phase. For the film evaporated at the substrate temperature of $150^{\circ}C$, the peaks of photocurrent are at 720nm and 980nm.
