  • The purpose of this study is to investigate cutting characteristics and wear behavior in SCM440 steel with different cutting tools, CBN(Cubic Boron Nitride) and coated CBN. During the test coated CBN tool especially with TiAlN showed better wear resistance behavior than orginal CBN tools. In the interrupted cutting condition, axial groove affected tool surface with impact force during the turning operation. For advantageous turning parameter in the interrupted process it is recommendable that lower speed. Also surface roughness showed better behavior in the coated CBN tool conditions than normal CBN conditions. Mainly this is caused by reduced friction between material and tool surface with coated layer.

  • In this study an experimental investigation was conducted to assesment of cutting ability for CBN ball end-milling, STD11 and NAK80 materials. The cutting force and surface roughness of the work-pieces were obtained in machining center. The assessment of CBN tools were inspected through the tool dynamotor and SEM. When $30^{\circ}$ negative rake angle, the wear and cutting force were good, surface roughness was better at cutting fluid during CBN cutting.

  • This paper presents the performance of CBN tools in the machining of hardened die-materials, SKD11 and SKD61 steel with HRC 50, by high-speed face milling. Generally, grinding or EDM is being used in machining of hardened materials but the cost is very high. If those can be replaced by cutting, it will be a greatly economical advantage. CBN tool has been recognized as an effective tool in turning, but it has not been in milling. So wear and surface roughness mode of CBN tool for hardened SKD11 and SKD61 steel were investigated by high-speed face milling in this study Also the relation between cutting force and wear mode of CBN tools was investigated.

  • Hard turning on modern lathes becomes a realistic replacement for many grinding applications. Because CBN tools are expensive, excessive tool wear can eliminate economic advantages of hard turning. This paper describes a study of investigating the cutting force and the characteristics of tool wear in hard turning of hardened steels, AISI 52100. Cutting forces generated using CBN tools have been evaluated. The radial thrust cutting force was the largest among three cutting force components. It increased dramatically as a result of progressive tool wear. On the other hand, the result shows significantly different wear characteristics between high CBN and low CBN. Backpropagation neural network was used for the estimation of tool wear. The networks were achieved the reliability of 96.3% even when the spindle speed and feed rate are changed.

  • In recent years, high hardness steel is used for most of the material in many areas including aircraft, nuclear power, space exploration and automotive parts. Low CBN tools are widely used in industrial field which can effectively process high hardness steel of HRC 45 or harder. The results of this study demonstrated, when high hardness steel, SCM440 is turned with Low CBN tools coated with TiN and TiAlN coatings respectively, that both the thrust force and cutting force tends to increase with more increase in cutting force than thrust force, as the feed rate increases at constant cutting speed. In addition, the size of the cutting force and thrust force does not change with the increased cutting speed at the same feed rate, but the tool life is reduced if the cutting speed is increased to shorten the machining time. Therefore, it is recommended to limit the cutting speed at 250 m/min maximum or less. Furthermore, comparing the cutting force of the three tools at the same cutting condition, Tin coating tool showed the smallest cutting force and Low CBN was the next, and the TiAlN coating tools showed the largest cutting force.

  • The high speed machining is now one of the most effective manufacturing methods to achive higher productivity. However, due to the increased cutting temperatures caused by increased cutting speed, tool wear become larger. Especially in high speed face milling, cutting tools are exposed not only to high cutting temperatures, but also to mechanical and thermal shock stresses. It is essential, therefore, to know the wear characteristics of tool materials in high speed machining. This study presents an experimental investigation of the cutting performance of CBN tools in high speed face milling of gray cast iron FC25. The effect of cutting conditions and cutting length on flank wear of CBN tools and roughness of machined surfaces is investigated. The cutting parameters involved were ; cutting speeds in the range of 600to 1800 m/min, feed of 0.1 mm/tooth, and depth of cut of 0.3mm.

  • When high-speed interrupted cutting is carried out for die and mold steels with high hardness, CBN tools manifested a significantly longer wear life than carbide, ceramic, or cermet tools in an experiment of face milling characteristics. In addition, it was also found that they secured a stable surface roughness within a range of 1.6 S~6.3 S, an acceptable range for precision machining for polished machining parts. And it makes them acceptable in the precision machining field, except in industries where very high machining accuracy is required. In the high hardness interrupted cutting, it was advantageous to perform a negaland treatment and a honning treatment on the tools' cutting edge to extend tool life and surface roughness. Also, severe crater development was found on the sloped face in CBN tools following high-speed machining. This caused the cutting edge to be weakened and damaged, and ultimately resulted in a shorter tool life. Finally, as a result of EDX mapping inspection, Cr component was detected evenly on the entire crater wear area, which can be included only in STD 11.

  • Hard turning is a machining process for hardened materials with high surface quality so that grinding process can be eliminated. Therefore, the hard turning is capable of reducing machining time and improving productivity. In this study, hardened AISI4140 (high-carbon chromium steel) that has excellent yield strength, toughness and wear resistance was finish turned using CBN tools. Wear characteristics of CBN tool was analyzed in dry and MQL mixed with nano-particle (Nano-MQL). The dominant fracture mechanism of CBN tool is diffusion and dissolution wear on the rake surface resulting in thinner cutting edge. Abrasive wear by hard inclusion in AISI4140 was dominant on the flank surface. Nano-MQL reduced tool wear comparing with the dry machining but chip evacuation should be considered. A cryogenically treated tool showed promising result in tool wear.

  • In this study, unsintered and pre-sintered low purity alumina ceramics were machined with various tools to clarify the machinability, optimum tool materials and optimum cutting conditions. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. (1)In the case of dry cutting, the sintered diamond and natural diamond tools exhibit better performance in machining of the ceramic pre-sintered at lower temperature, and the tool lives of both tools in machining the ceramics pre-sintered at high temperature becomes extremely short. (2)The performance of CBN tool becomes better in dry machining of the ceramics pre-sintered at higher temperature. (3)When the pre-sintered ceramics were wet machined with sintered diamond, the tool life becomes considerably long, and higher cutting speed can be used than in the case of the CBN and ceramic tools, the tool lives becomes shorter at wet cutting than at dry cutting, especially exhibiting extremely short tool life in wet cutting with ceramic tool.
