An Infertility Treatment Case Mainly Managed by Customized Intraoral Balancing Appliance of FCST, a TMJ Therapy for the Balance of Meridian and Neurological System (FCST 맞춤형 음양균형장치를 위주로 한 보조생식술 실패 후 난임 치료 후 출산 증례)

  • Therapeutic effect of Customized yinyang Balancing Appliance (CBA) of functional cerebrospinal therapy (FCST) for meridian and neurological yinyang balance was observed in infertility case. One infertility case was managed with the CBA, combined with acupuncture and herb-medicine. Clinical outcome measurement was based on subjective measures and clinical observations. The patient showed positive changes in subjective symptoms after the treatment and this effect maintained over the follow-up period. And the patient gave a birth to a female child. Further clinical and biological research on FCST is expected.

Isolation of pseudomonas sp. S-47 and its degradation of 4-chlorobenzoic acid

  • The strain of S-47 degrading 4-chlorobenzoic acid (4CBA) was isolated from Ulsan chemical industrial complex by enrichment cultivation with 1 mM 4CBA. The strain was Gram-negative rod and grew optimally at 30.deg.C and pH 7 under aerobic condition, so that the organism was identified as a species of Pseudomonas. Pseudomonas sp. S-47 degraded 4-chlorobenzoic acid to produce a yellow-colored meta-cleavage product, which was confirmed to be 5-chloro-2-hydroxymuconic semialdehyde (5C-2HMS) by UV-visible spectrophotometry. 5C-3HMS was proved trometry. This means that Pseudomonas sp. S-47 degraded 4CBA via 4-chlorocatechol to 5C-2HMS by meta-cleavage reaction and then to 5C-2HMA by 5C-2HMS dehydrogenase.

Study of the re-osseointegration of implant fixture after mechanical unscrewing (임플란트 고정체의 의원성 동요 후 골 유착 반응에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the re-osseointegration of the implants that had mechanical unscrewing possibly occurred or not. Furthermore, if it happened, the degree of re-osseointegration was evaluated by comparing with previous osseointegration. Materials and methods: The smooth implant (commercial pure titanium 99%) specimens, whose diameter and length was 3.75 mm, 4 mm, respectively were produced. Two implants were inserted into each tibia of 7 New Zealand female white rabbits weighing at least 3.0 kg. The torque removal force for each implant after 6 weeks of implants placement was measured and included in group I. The torque removal forces were assessed after the fixtures were re-screwed to original position and the subjects were allowed to have 4 more weeks for healing and included in group II. One rabbit was sacrificed after first measurement and produced 4 slide specimens in group I, and two rabbits were sacrificed after 2nd measurement, 7 slide specimens, in group II for histomorphologic investigations. All slide specimens were assessed based on the proportion of BIC (bone-implant contact) as well as CBa (Bone area in the cortical passage) value produced by counting the screw threads embedded in the compact bones under the optical microscopic analysis (${\times}20$). Statistical analysis was conducted to evaluate the torque removal force, BIC and CBa between group I and II. Results: As for the torque removal force, the result was $10.8{\pm}3.6$ Ncm for group I and $20.2{\pm}9.7$ Ncm for group II. Furthermore, the torque removal force of group II increased by 98.1% in average compared to group I (P<.05). On the other hand, histomorphologic analysis displayed that there was no statistical significance in BIC and CBa values between group I and the group II (P>.05), and RT/BIC and RT/CBa between group I and group II were statistically significant (P<.05). Conclusion: It is possible to obtain more substantial re-osseointegration within shorter periods than the period needed for the initial osseointegration in case of iatrogenically unscrewed implants.

  • In this paper, we estimate area of tube in a CBA(0)-space with extendible geodesics. As its application, we obtain an upper bound of systole in a nonsimply connected space of nonpositive curvature. Also, we determine a relative growth of a ball in a CBA(0)-space to the corresponding ball in Euclidean plane.

  • Brazilin, the main constitutent of Caesalpinia sappan, was examined for its immunomodulating activities in normal CBA mice. Mitogen induced proliferation and production of ConA induced T-cell growth factors (TCGF) of splenocytes were significantly reduced in brazilin treated group, cmpared to control group. It was also found that suppressor activities of splenocytes in brazilin treated group was significantly increased compared to those in normal control group.

Catabolic Degradation of 4-Chlorobiphenyl by Pseudomonas sp. DJ-12 via Consecutive Reaction of meta-Cleavage and Hydrolytic Dechlorination

  • Pseudomonas sp. strain DJ-12 is a bacterial isolate capable of degrading 4-chlorobiphenyl (4CBP) as a carbon and energy source. The catabolic degradation of 4CBP by the strain DJ-12 was studied along with the genetic organization of the genes responsible for the crucial steps of the catabolic degradation. The catabolic pathway was characterized as being conducted by consecutive reactions of the meta-cleavage of 4CBP, hydrolytic dechlorination of 4-chlorobenzoate (4CBA), hydroxylation of 4-hydroxybenzoate, and meta-cleavage of protocatechuate. The pcbC gene responsible for the meta-cleavage of 4CBP only showed a 30 to 40% homology in its deduced amino acid sequence compared to those of the corresponding genes from other strains. The amino acid sequence of 4CBA-CoA dechlorinase showed an 86% homology with that of Pseudomonas sp. CBS3, yet only a 50% homology with that of Arthrobacter spp. However, the fcb genes for the hydrolytic dechlorination of 4CBA in Pseudomonas sp. DJ-12 showed an uniquely different organization from those of CBS3 and other reported strains. Accordingly, these results indicate that strain DJ-12 can degrade 4CBA completely via meta-cleavage and hydrolytic dechlorination using enzymes that are uniquely different in their amino acid sequences from those of other bacterial strains with the same degradation activities.

  • Pseudomonas sp. S-47 is a bacterium capable of degrading benzoate as well as 4-chlorobenzoate (4CBA). Benzoate and 4CBA are known to be degraded via a meta-cleavage pathway characterized by a series of enzymes encoded by xyl genes. The meta-cleavage pathway operon in Pseudomonas sp. S-47 encodes a set of enzymes which transform benzoate and 4CBA into TCA cycle intermediates via the meta-cleavage of (4-chloro )catechol to produce pyruvate and acetyl-CoA. In the current study, the meta-pathway gene cluster was cloned from the chromosomal DNA of S-47 strain to obtain pCS1, which included the degradation activities for 4CBA and catechol. The genetic organization of the operon was then examined by cloning the meta-pathway genes into a pBluescript SKII(+) vector. As such, the meta-pathway operon from Pseudomonas sp. S-47 was found to contain 13 genes in the order of xylXYZLTEGFlQKIH. The two regulatory genes, xylS and xylR, that control the expression of the meta-pathway operon, were located adjacently downstream of the meta-pathway operon. The xyl genes from strain S-47 exhibited a high nucleoside sequence homology to those from Pseudomonas putida mt-2, except for the xylJQK genes, which were more homologous to the corresponding three genes from P. stutzeri AN10. One open reading frame was found between the xylH and xylS genes, which may playa role of a transposase. Accordingly, the current results suggest that the xyl gene cluster in Pseudomonas sp. S-47 responsible for the complete degradation of benzoate was recombined with the corresponding genes from P. putida mt-2 and P. stutzeri AN10.

A Survey of the Cost Benefit Analysis to R&D Projects of Selected Laboratories. (연구개발프로젝트의 비용효과분석 활용 실태 - 주요 기업연구소의 조사결과를 중심으로 -)

  • We are faced with the crisis of the R&D investment because of the effects of the IMF conditions. Most of the laboratories are going to restructure by the cutting off of money, man power and the reduction of R&D thema. Therefore it is necessary to allocate the R&D resources effectively to the R&D projects. The evaluation and the selection of the R&D projects have been recognized as the most important process for the allocation of the R&D resources. The result of the KITA(1997) shows that the commercial success rate of the R&D from new-product brain storming is only 5.8%. This study aims to analyze the actual conditions of the cost benefit analysis(CBA) of R&D projects of selected laboratories and to study measure methods of the R&D benefits. The research method of this study reviews the CBA of R&D firstly, and surveys 200 selected high ranking labs of the R&D expenditures. For the comparison of the results between '87 and '97, this survey used the same questionaries for each year. As the result of the survey only 27 labs(response rate 13.5%) responded. The result of the '97 survey is as follows : The CBA is used by 44% of responding labs. The economic evaluation method for the R&D project selection is used by 48% of labs and this numbers increased by over 10 percents points compared with the result of '87. The CBA is used for about 40% about each of the budget preparing and the budget analysis, and by 30% of labs to analyze sales and expenditures of the overall period of the project. As the measurement of benefits of R&D projects, 30% of labs responded that it is impossible to measure the benefits, and 20% of labs measured the benefits between sales and expenditures of the R&D project.

Study on the EMG Signal Changes Depending on the Results of Restricted Cervical Rotation Test: Case Series Report (경추 회전제한 검사 결과에 따른 근전도 신호 변화: 증례보고)

  • We investigated the potential of electromyography (EMG) for diagnosing imbalance in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) to apply functional cerebrospinal therapy (FCST). The electromyography signals were measured in the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) in patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) while a FCST specialist conducted a restricted cervical rotation test. In addition, we also observed the changes in the electromyography signals according to pre-treatment or treatment with a TMJ balancing appliance (TBA), a customized TMJ balancing appliance (CBA), or a CBA with one paper bar. The right SCMs of the two patients with right TMJ imbalance had high EMG signals in the right cervical rotation test, while the left SCMs showed low EMG signals in the left rotation. In addition, the high EMG signals in the right SCMs decreased when using the TBA or the CBA, but the EMG signals of the left SCMs showed low EMG values during the treatments. Furthermore, the EMG signals of the right SCMs rose again after artificial imbalance of the right TMJ by the CBA with one paper bar. This case report demonstrated the potential of EMG as an objective diagnostic method for FCST.
