  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of nickel chloride ($NiCl_2$) exposure on oxidative stress of the abalone Haliotis discus hannai. Experimental groups were composed of one control condition and five nickel chloride exposure conditions (5.9, 8.8, 13.3, 20.0, 30.0 mg/L). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was increased in the foot and hepatopancreas, but decreased in the gill. Catalase (CAT) activity was increased in all exposure groups except 20.0 mg/L and 30.0 mg/L. In the gill, CAT activity was similar to the control group for all exposure groups. In the hepatopancreas, CAT activity was increased compared with the control group. However SOD and CAT activity showed not significant differences (P > 0.05).

  • To understand the adaptability of Leymus chinensis forage grass to environmental stresses, we analyzed the $H_2O_2$ scavenging activity based on several antioxidant enzymes and total phenolics content, including peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT), in shoots and roots subjected to salt and dehydration stresses during seedling growth. After NaCl or PEG treatment, plants showed reduced seedling growth under over 200 mM NaCl or 30% PEG treatment condition in shoots and roots compared with the control condition. In addition, plants showed high enzymatic activity of CAT in the shoots, whereas they exhibited high activity levels of APX and POD in the roots in both the NaCl and PEG treatment conditions. These results seem to indicate that Leymus chinensis seedlings responding to salt and dehydration stresses during initial growth is associated with enhanced activity of $H_2O_2$ scavenging antioxidant enzymes in the shoots or roots. The plants also showed high levels of total phenolics under NaCl treatment, with a high concentration in both the shoots and roots. Our results showed that the induced activity patterns of APX in the roots and CAT in the shoots indicate that low $H_2O_2$ levels were mainly maintained through tissue-specific redox homeostasis involving enzymes such as APX and CAT during salt and dehydration stresses. This study highlights the importance of antioxidant enzymes in the establishment of Leymus chinensis seedlings under high salinity conditions, such as typical desertification.

  • A novel lactobacilli replicon from plasmids of Lactobacillus reuteri KCTC 3678 was isolated. Eight L. reuteri strains from Korean Collection for Type Cultures (KCTC) and Korea Food Research Institute (KFRI) were screened for cryptic plasmids and most strains harbored 1 or 2 plasm ids. Particularly, L. reuteri KCTC 3678 contained 6 plasm ids which all were used for screening of lactobacilli replicon. EcoRI digests of the plasmid DNA prep from L. reuteri KCTC 3678 were ligated with pUC19 and the recombinant DNAs were serially named from pLR1 to pLR7. A cat (chloramphenicol acetyltransferase; $Cm^r$) gene originated from pC194 was introduced into pLR1-7, resulting in pLR1cat-pLR7cat, respectively. The recombinant plasmids were introduced into L. reuteri KCTC 3679, and only transformants harboring pLR5cat were obtained, indicating that the insert in pLR5 functioned as a lactobacilli replicon.

  • A ten-year-old, male cat presented with recent loss of body weight, depression, vomiting, anorexia, polydipsia, and polyuria. General physical findings included depression, weakness, severe dehydration and a strong acetone odor on the breath. A complete blood count and serum biochemical profiles were leukocytosis, hyperglycemia (286 mg/dl), hypokalemia (2.6 mEq/L), hyponatremia, and high serum fructosamine (600 $\mu$mol/L). In blood gas analysis the cat had acidosis (pH 7.127, p$CO_2$26.7 mmHg). In urinalysis glycosuria and ketouria were appeared. On the basis of clinical signs, serum chemistry, blood gas analysis and urinalysis, diabetic ketoacidosis was diagnosed. Treatment included subcutaneous administration of protamine zinc insulin (0.75 U/head) and intravenous administration of 0.9% saline. Potassium phosphate and sodium bicarbonate was added to the fluids. Serum fructosamine for assessment of glycemic control was measured on occasion calls. On day 296, the patient improved clinically and did not experience any problems resulting from diabetic ketoacidosis.

  • A cat is able to quickly recover balance from unstable posture. To observe the balance recovery procedure of the cat, an impulse is applied to the cat while walking on a narrow bridge. We find that it rotates its tail toward the falling direction. In our previous research, the balance recovery procedure is analyzed based on the law of the angular momentum conservation and then a key equation is derived to maintain the balance. However, it did not consider the gravity, so the performance is not good. In this paper, a new dynamic model is proposed using the Lagrangian mechanics. In the method, the gravity is included in the potential energy. Through the proposed dynamic model, controlling the balance of a walking robot is possible.

  • A 11-year-old, female Russian Blue cat was presented with anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea lasting for 3 days. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic, non-circumferential, and eccentrically formed intestinal loop with altered wall layering and thickening of the tunica muscularis. After surgical resection, histopathologic examination confirmed an infiltrative, round-cell neoplasm composed of sheets and cords of neoplastic mast cells within a fibrotic, edematous stroma. The cat was alive and healthy 6 months after surgery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an intestinal mast cell tumor in a Russian Blue cat in South Korea.

  • A 6-year-old female domestic short hair cat presented with acute onset of vomiting, anorexia, lethargy, and tachypnea. The cat was apparently healthy prior to presentation without history of trauma. On diagnostic imagings, the entire stomach and spleen were detected in the thoracic cavity. An emergent celiotomy was performed, and a type-4 hiatal hernia was confirmed; the stomach, spleen, pancreas, and duodenum were herniated through the esophageal hiatus. It was corrected using phrenicoplasty, esophagopexy, and left-sided gastropexy and there was no recurrence 16 months after surgery. This is the first case report of an idiopathic type-4 hiatal hernia in a cat.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the characteristics of the user of complementary alternative therapies(CAT) and to identify the important predictive factors associated with them. Method: This study included 142 patients attending outpatient rheumatology clinics of D Hospital in Busan between July and August in 2001. The multiple logistic regression model was developed to estimate the likelihood of user or nonuser of CAT. Result: The duration of illness and chance score of health locus of control were found to be significant factors through the estimated coefficients of using CAT. Duration of illness is longer and chance score of health locus of control is higher in patients who have used CAT in past than that of nonuser. When the model performance was evaluated by comparing the observed outcome with predicted outcome, the model correctly identified 95% of user of CAT and 31% of nonuser. Conclusion: In this survey, duration of illness and chance score of health locus of control are found to be significant factors in predicting utilization of CAT. Nurses who care for rheumatoid arthritis patients should take consideration into health locus of control in planning health education programs.
