Characteristics of Malodor Pollutants and Their Dispersion Measured in Several Industrial Source Regions in Yangsan (양산시 산업단지에서 측정한 악취물질의 농도 분포 특성 및 대기확산 모델링)

  • In this study, the environmental behavior of malodor pollutants (MPs: $H_2S$, $CH_3SH$, DMS, and DMDS) was investigated around areas influenced by strong anthropogenic processes based on observations and modeling study (a CALPUFF dispersion model). The MP emission concentrations were measured from 8 industrial source regions (tire plants (S1-S3), waste water disposal plant (S4), and oil refinery (S5) in an urban center area and paper mill/incineration plant (S6) and livestock feedlots (S7-S8) in Ungsang area) in Yangsan city during a fall period in 2008 (21 October 2008). Overall, the most MPs emitted from the urban center area were found to affect the malodor pollution in their downwind areas during early morning (06:00 LST) and nighttime (18:00 and 21:00 LST), compared with those in the Ungsang area. For malodor intensity, the most MPs in the urban center area (especially S1 and S2) were found to be a significant contributor, whereas $CH_3SH$ and $H_2S$ in the Ungsnag area (especially S6) were the dominant contributor. The model study showed agreement in the spatial distributions of simulated MPs with those of the observations. The largest impact of MPs in the urban center area on the malodor pollution in its residential areas occurred at S1, S2, and S3 sites during nighttime, while that of MPs in the Ungsang area occurred at S6 and S8 sites. This may be caused mainly by the high MP emissions and in part by wind conditions (prevailing northeasterly winds with low wind speeds of 2-3 m/s).

  • A numerical study on PM using a dispersion and deposition model which can analyze for both quantify and quality would not only offer us to understand our environment more easily, but also make it easy that we can make a plan in order to prevent air pollution. The U.S. EPA has proposed the CALPUFF modeling system as a guideline model for regulatory applications involving long-range transport and on a case-by-case basis for near-field applications where. non- steady- state effects which consider situations such as spatial variability in the meteorological fields, calm winds, fumigations, re-circulation or stagnation, and terrain or coastal effects may be important.   • It is known that the fluidized bed incinerator, which is the subject of analysis, shows excellent performance in heat and mass transfer due to excellent mixing and contact performance between fluidized sand and fuel, and also shows relatively good combustion characteristics thanks to good mixing and long residence time for low-grade fuels. have. In this study, air flow analysis is performed to understand the characteristics of co-firing of sludge, waste oil and solid waste in the fluidized bed incinerator, flow characteristics of flue gas, and discharge characteristics of pollutants.The fluidized bed incinerator subject to analysis is a facility that incinerates factory waste and general household waste together with sludge, with a processing capacity of 32 tons/day. to be. In addition, the operation method was designed for continuous operation for 24 hours. As a result, it can be seen that the lower combustion air and the introduced secondary air are changed to a strong turbulence and swirl flow form and exit through the outlet while rotating inside the freeboard layer. The homogeneous one-way flow form before reaching the secondary air nozzle has very high diffusivity with the high-speed jet flow of the nozzle.

Dispersion of Air Pollutants from Ship Based Sources in Incheon Port (인천항의 선박오염원에서 배출된 대기오염물질의 확산)

  • Emissions of pollutants from ship-based sources are controlled by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Since pollutants emitted from ship may be dispersed to the land, controlling emissions from ships is necessary for efficient air quality management in Incheon, where exposure to ship-based pollution is frequent. It has been noted that the ratios of air pollutant emissions from coastal areas to inland areas are about 14% for NOx and 10% for SOx. The air quality of coastal urban areas is influenced by the number of ships present and the dispersion pattern of the pollutants released depending on the local circulation system. In this study, the dispersion of pollutants from ship-based sources was analyzed using the numerical California Puff Model (CALPUFF) based on a meteorological field established using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF). Air pollutant dispersion modeling around coastal urban regions such as Incheon should consider point and line sources emitted from both anchored and running ships, respectively. The total average NOx emissions from 82-84 ships were 6.2 g/s and 6.8 g/s, entering and leaving, respectively. The total average SOx emissions from 82-84 ships, entering and leaving, were 3.6 g/s and 5.1 g/s, respectively. The total average emissions for NOx and SOx from anchored ships were 0.77 g/s and 1.93 g/s, respectively. Due to the influence of breezes from over land, the transport of pollutants from Incheon Port to inland areas was suppressed, and the concentration of NOx and SOx inland were temporarily reduced. NOx and SOx were diffused inland by the sea breeze, and the concentration of NOx and SOx gradually increased inland. The concentration of pollutants in the area adjacent to Incheon Port was more influenced by anchored ship in the port than sea breezes. We expect this study to be useful for setting emission standards and devising air quality policies in coastal urban regions.

PM10 Emission Estimation from LNG G/T Power Plants and Its Important Analysis on Air Quality in Incheon Area (인천 지역 LNG G/T발전소의 미세먼지 (PM10) 배출량 평가 및 주변 대기질 영향 분석)

  • Base on emission factors derived from National Institute of Environmental Research, Particulate matter from combined cycle power plants (CCPPs) has been estimated to be a important source of $PM_{10}$. Generally there is no serious emission of particulate matter in CCPPs. because the fuel of them is natural gas. But emission gas after long shut down season has very high dust content. Therefore $PM_{10}$ emission rate is dependent on its operation mode. In this study, particulate dispersion study for new city near CCPPs complex has performed using CALPUFF model for three case. $PM_{10}$ concentration has big difference between normal operation and 2 case start-up condition after long shutdown. In normal operating conditions, daily $0.32{\sim}0.50{\mu}g/m^3$ influence on of the surrounding area. But when 1~2 aerobic high concentration discharged conditions, average concentration is higher about $9.2{\sim}34.1{\mu}g/m^3$ than normal operating conditions.

  • This study suggests a specific methodology to analyze how emission impacts on regional emission concentrations in accordance with the change of weather conditions, and the need of its application. The suggested methodology was applied to a transportation network of Pochun area in Gyenggido as an example. The methodology contains two types of analytical models; 1) dispersion analysis based on emission from traffic, and 2) dispersion analysis based on the combination between emission from traffic and existing emission in the air. By doing so, it is expected that the comprehensive influence of emission on traffic network and its surrounding areas can be identified. In addition, it might be useful for us to apply environmental risk assessment based on the effect of emission on the people.

BTEX Exposure and its Health Effects in Pregnant Women Following the Hebei Spirit Oil Spill (허베이 스피릿호 유류유출사고 지역 산모의 BTEX 노출과 건강영향)

  • Objectives : We evaluated the health effects of exposure to BTEX(Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, m,p-Xylene, o-Xylene) in the Taean area after the Hebei Spirit oil spill. Methods : We used a questionnaire survey to look for health effects among 80 pregnant women 2 to 3 months following the Hebei Spirit oil spill. Their BTEX exposures were estimated using the CALPUFF method. We then used a multiple logistic regression analysis to evaluate the effects of BTEX exposure on the women s health effets. Results : Pregnant women who lived near the accident site reported more symptoms of eye irritation and headache than those who lived farther from the site. There was a trend of decreasing symptoms with an increase in distance from the spill site. Pregnant women exposed to higher ambient cumulative levels of Xylene were significantly more likely to report symptoms of the skin(OR 8.01 95% CI=1.74-36.76) in the first day after the accident and significantly more likely to report abdominal pain(OR 3.86 95% CI=1.02-14.59 for Ethylbenzene, OR 6.70 95% CI=1.82-24.62 for Xylene) during the 1st through 4th days following the accident. Conclusions : This study suggests that exposure to BTEX from an oil spill is correlated with an increased risk of health effects among pregnant women. This implies the need to take proper measures, including the development of a national policy for environmental health emergencies and a plan for studying the short- and long-term chronic health effects associated with such spills.
