  • Research that reconstructs a 3D model from a freehand 2D sketch has gained attention since 1990s, when data integration in the CAD/CAPP/CAM/CNC chain was an important issue. However, 2D sketches in the conceptual design phase have not been integrated with the downstream CAD/CAPP/CAM/CNC chain. In this paper, we present a method to interface a freehand sketch modeling to commercial CAD systems by mapping a sketch modeling history to the macro parametric history. We use an extended ISO10303-112 standard to represent the modeling history in a gestural modeling system and translate sketch files to neutral macro files. Macro parametric translators are used to translate netural macro files to commercial CAD files.

  • Lasting machines for shoe manufacturing are continuously developed with the aid of automation and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM). Although automation and CAM techniques have tremendously reduced the labor in shoe manufacturing field, there still remain some parts manufactured by experts. In order to enhance the capability and efficiency of machines for labor-free shoe manufacturing, CAD data of a shoe last is indispensable. While CAD datarization takes the fundamental role in the shoe design as well as the shoe manufacturing, there has been little research for the CAD datarization of a shoe last. In this paper, a new procedure for CAD datarization of a shoe last using finite element patches is proposed and some data for the control part of the shoe lasting machine are extracted and interpolated from the CAD data. The outer line of a shoe-last sole is interpolated by a tension spline method and bonding lines are extracted from the shoe CAD data. Finally, initial setting data for the lasting machine are extracted from the last CAD data and initial setup parts of the lasting machine.

  • PURPOSE. To integrate extra-oral facial scanning information with CAD/CAM complete dentures to immediately rehabilitate terminal dentition. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ten patients with terminal dentition scheduled for total extraction and immediate denture placement were recruited for this study. The patients were submitted to a facial scanning procedure using the in-office PritiMirror scanner with bite registration records in-situ. Definitive stone cast models and bite records were subsequently submitted to a lab scanning procedure using the lab scanner (iSeries DWOS; Dental Wings). The scanned models were used to create a virtual teeth setup of a complete denture. Using the intra-oral bite records as a reference, the virtual setup was incorporated in the facial scan thereby facilitating a virtual clinical evaluation (teeth try-in) phase. After applying necessary adjustments, the virtual setup was submitted to a CAM procedure where a 5-axis industrial milling machine (M7 CNC; Darton AG General) was used to fabricate a full-milled PMMA immediate provisional prosthesis. RESULTS. Total extractions were performed, the dentures were immediately inserted, and subjective clinical fit was evaluated. The immediate provisional prostheses were inserted and clinical fit, occlusion/articulation, and esthetics were subjectively assessed; the results were deemed satisfactory. All provisional prostheses remained three months in function with no notable technical complications. CONCLUSION. Ten patients with terminal dentition were treated using a complete digital approach to fabricate complete dentures using CAD/CAM technology. The proposed technique has the potential to accelerate the rehabilitation procedure starting from immediate denture to final implant-supported prosthesis leading to more predictable functional and aesthetics outcomes.

  • In this study we propose a novel approach with which design engineers can define and design free-from surface more easily. Free-from surface is defined as a parameterics shape which consists of a set of contr ol points. Parametric shape which not only has the advantage of allowing users to perform design changes efficiently, but also provides designers with a natural design environment in which they can do their work more naturally and creatively. The objective of this study is to develop a PC level freeform surface modelling system which explicitly represents information of part geometry. In this study, freeform surface modeling system consist of three modules : freeform surface modeler, input/output modules and interface with Database. In recent year there are increasing demands for the 5-axis machining of a complicated shape. This study is the development of a CAM software system (or NC module) for the 5-axis machining of a general shape with a flat-end mill, a round-end mill, a ball-end mill.

  • The modern manufacturing systems and technologies produce products that are more accurate day by day. This can be reached mainly by improvement the manufacturing process with at the same time restricting more and more the quality specifications and reducing the uncertainty in part. The main objective an industry becomes to lower the part's variability, since the less variability - the better is product. One of the part of this task is measuring the object's uncertainty. The main purpose of this study is to understand the application of bootstrap method for uncertainty evaluation. Bootstrap method is a collection of sample re-use techniques designed to estimate standard errors and confidence intervals. In the case study a surface of an automobile engine block - (Top view side) is measured by Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) and analyzed for uncertainty using Geometric Least Squares in complex with bootstrap method. The designed experiment is composed by three similar measurements (the same features in unique reference system), but with different points (5, 10, 20) concentration at each level. Then each cloud of points was independently analyzed by means of non-linear Least Squares, after estimated results have been reported. A MatLAB software tool used to generate new samples using bootstrap function. The results of the designed experiment are summarized and show that the bootstrap method provides the possibility to evaluate the uncertainty without repeating the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) measurements many times, i.e. potentially can reduce the measuring time.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to compare the margin and internal fitness of single anterior all-ceramic crown zirconia core made by three deferent CAD/CAM systems. Material and methods: Five single zirconia cores were manufactured by three deferent CAD/CAM systems($Cerasys^{(R)}$system, KaVo $Everest^{(R)}$system, $LAVA^{TM}$system). The manufactured zirconia cores were duplicated through the use of replica technique, and a replicated sample was sectioned in the center of bucolingual and mesiodistal direction to measure the marginal and internal gap. Measurement was carried out by using measuring microscope ($AXIO^{(R)}$) and $I-Solution^{(R)}$ and analysed through the use of ANOVA. Results: As for the mean marginal fitness of the zirconia core, it was $84.74{\pm}27.57{\mu}m$, in $Cerasys^{(R)}$, $80.23{\pm}21.07{\mu}m$ in KaVo $Everest^{(R)}$ and $96.37 {\pm}11.45{\mu}m$ in $LAVA^{TM}$, and as for the mean internal gap, it was $94.11{\pm}30.07{\mu}m$ in $Cerasys^{(R)}$, $92.31{\pm}25.18{\mu}m$ in KaVo $Everest^{(R)}$, and $94.99{\pm}18.74 {\mu}m$ in $LAVA^{TM}$. There was no significant statistically deference among the total average gap of three systems. The internal gap in KaVo $Everest^{(R)}$ seemed to be smaller than $LAVA^{TM}$ (P < .05). The internal gap in the incisal area was larger in all of the three systems. Conclusion: There was no difference in marginal fitness in $Cerasys^{(R)}$, KaVo $Everest^{(R)}$ and $LAVA^{TM}$. As for the internal fitness, it was smaller in KaVo $Everest^{(R)}$ system than $LAVA^{TM}$ system. In all of the three systems, there was a larger gap in incisal area. The marginal and internal gap was within the clinically allowed range in all of the three systems.

  • State of problem: Cement-retained implant-supported prostheses are routinely used in dentistry. The use of high strength cements has become more popular with the increasing confidence in the stability of the implant-abutment screw connection and the high survival rates of osseointegrated implants. No clinical data on retention of metal copings using CAD/CAM. To evaluate retention of metal copings using CAD/CAM system bonded to short titanium abutment with four different cements and compare retentive strength of metal copings with sandblasting or without sandblasting before cementation. Forty titanium abutment blocks were fabricated and divided into 4 groups of 10 samples each. Forty metal copings with occlusal hole to allow for retention testing were fabricated using CAD/CAM technology. The four cements were Fujicem(Fuji, Japan), Maxcem Elite(Kerr, USA), Panavia F2.0(Kurarary, Japan) and Superbond C&B(Sunmedical, Japan). The copings were cemented on the titanium abutment according to manufacture's recommendation. All samples were stored for 24h at 37oC in 100% humidity and tested for retention using universal testing machine(Instron) at a crosshead speed of 1.0mm/min. Force at retentive failure was recorded in Newton. The mode of failure was also recorded. Means and standard deviations of loads at failure were analyzed using ANOVA and Paired t-test. Statistical significance was set at P<0.05. Panavia F2.0 provided significantly higher retentive strength than Fujicem, Maxcem Elite(P<0.05). Sandblasting significantly increased bond strength(P<0.05). The mode of failure was cement remaining principally on metal copings. Within the limitation of this study, Panavia F2.0 showed significantly stronger retentive strength than Fujicem, Maxcem Elite(p<0.05). The Ranking order of the cements to retain the copings was Panavia F2.0, Fujicem = Maxcem Elite. Sandblasting significantly increased bond strength(P<0.05). The retentive strength of metal copings on implant abutment were influenced by surface roughness and type of cements.
