This paper describes an integrated CAD and CAPP system for prismatic parts of injection mold which generates a complete process plan automatically from CAD data of a part without human intervention. This system employs Auto CAD as a CAD model and GS-CAPP as an automatic process planning system for injection mold. The proposed CAD/CAPP system consists of three modules such as CAD data conversion module, manufacturing feature recognition module, and CAD/CAPP interface module. CAD data conversion module transforms design data of AutoCAD into three dimensional part data. Manufacturing feature recognition module extracts specific manufacturing features of a part using feature recognition rule base. Each feature can be recognized by combining geometry, position and size of the feature. CAD/CAPP interface module links manufacturing feature codes and other head data to automatic process planning system. The CAD/CAPP system can improve the efficiency of process planning activities and reduce the time required for process planning. This system can provide a basis for the development of part feature based design by analyzing manufacturing features.

Static CAD models are the CAD models that do not have feature information and modeling history. These static models are generated by translating CAD models in a specific CAD system into neutral formats such as STEP and IGES. When a CAD model is translated into a neutral format, its precious feature information such as feature parameters and modeling history is lost. Once the feature information is lost, the advantage of feature based modeling is not valid any longer, and modification for the model is purely dependent on geometric and topological manipulations. However, the capabilities of the existing methods to modify static CAD models are limited, Direct modification methods such as tweaking can only handle the modifications that do not involve topological changes. There was also an approach to modify static CAD model by using volume decomposition. However, this approach was also limited to modifications of protrusion features. To address this problem, we extend the volume decomposition approach to handle not only protrusion features but also depression features in a static CAD model. This method first generates the model that contains the volume of depression feature using the bounding box of a static CAD model. The difference between the model and the bounding box is selectively decomposed into so called the feature volume and the base volume. A modification of depression feature is achieved by manipulating the feature volume of the static CAD model.

For CAD data users, few things are as frustrating as receiving CAD data that is unusable due to poor data quality. Users waste time trying to get better data, fixing the data, or even rebuilding the data from scratch from paper drawings or other sources. Most related works and commercial tools handle the boundary representation (B-Rep) shape of CAD models. However, we propose a design history?based approach for healing CAD model errors. Because the design history, which covers the features, the history tree, the parameterization data and constraints, reflects the design intent, CAD model errors can be healed by an interdependency analysis of the feature commands or of the parametric data of each feature command, and by the reconstruction of these feature commands through the rule-based reasoning of an expert system. Unlike other B Rep correction methods, our method automatically heals parametric feature models without translating them to a B-Rep shape, and it also preserves engineering information.

The exchange of parameterized feature-based CAD models is important for product data sharing among different organizations and automation systems. The role of feature-based modeling is to gonerate the shape of product and capture design intends In a CAD system. A feature is generated by referring to topological entities in a solid. Identifying referenced topological entities of a feature is essential for exchanging feature-based CAD models through a neutral format. If the CAD data contains the modification history in addition to the construction history, a matching mechanism is also required to find the same entity in the new model (post-edit model) corresponding to the entity in the old model (preedit model). This problem is known as the persistent naming problem. There are additional problems arising from the exchange of parameterized feature-based CAD models. Authors have analyzed previous studies with regard to persistent naming and characteristics for the exchange of parameterized feature-based CAD models, and propose a solution to the persistent naming problem. This solution is comprised of two parts: (a) naming of topological entities based on the object spore information (OSI) and secondary name (SN); and (b) name matching under the proposed naming.

The exchange of model design data among heterogeneous CAD systems is very difficult because each CAD system has different data structures suitable for its own functions. STEP represents product information in a common computer-interpretable form that is required to remain complete and consistent when the product information is needed to be exchanged among different computer systems. However, STEP has complex architecture to represent point, line, curve and vectors of element. Moreover it can't represent geometry data of feature based models. In this study, a structure of XML document that represents geometry data of feature based models as neutral format has been developed. To use the developed XML document, a converter also has been developed to exchange modules so that it can exchange feature based data models among heterogeneous CAD systems. Developed XML document and Converter have been applied to commercial CAD systems.

The integrated design system for injection molding has been studied. The current CAD system do not provide mold designers with necessary function for CAD/CAPP/CAE interface except the geometric modeling capability. This paper describes a feature-based CAD system for mold and moldbase design which enables the concurrent design and CIM, with integrated design procedure, at the initial design stage of injection molding A new design methodology and resulting feature data files for this design system are also discussed.

As collaborative design and configuration design are of increasing importance in product development, it becomes essential to exchange the feature and parametric CAD models among participants. A history-based parametric method has been proposed and implemented. But each translator which exchanges the feature and parametric information tends to be heavy because to implement duplicated functions such as the identification of the selected geometries, mapping between features which have different attributes. Furthermore. because the history-based parametric translator uses the procedural model as the neutral format, which is the XML macro file, the history-based parametric translators need a geometric modeling kernel to generate an internal explicit geometric model. To ease the problem, we implemented a shared integration platform, the TransCAD. The TransCAD separates translators from the XML macro files. The translators for various CAD systems need to communicate with only the TransCAD. To support the communication with the TransCAD, we exposed the functions of the TransCAD by using the Automation APIs, which is developed by Microsoft. The Automation APIs of the TransCAD consist of the part modeling functions, the data extraction functions, and the utility functions. Each translator uses these functions to translate a parametric CAD model from the sending CAD system into the XML format, or from the in format into the model of the receiving CAD system This paper introduces what the TransCAD is and how it works for the exchange of the feature and parametric models.

As the networks connect the world, enterprises tend to move manufacturing activities into virtual spaces. Since different applications use different data terminology, it becomes a problem to interoperate, interchange, and manage electronic data among different systems. According to RTI, approximately one billion dollar has been being spent yearly for product data exchange and interoperability. As commercial CAD systems have brought in the concept of design feature for the sake of interoperability, terminologies of design feature need to be harmonized. In order to define design feature terminology for integration, knowledge about feature definitions of different CAD systems should be considered. STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product model data) have attempted to solve this problem, but it defines only syntactic data representation so that semantic data integration is unattainable. In this paper, we utilize the ontology concept to build a data model of design feature which can be a semantic standard of feature definitions of CAD systems. Using feature ontology, we implement an integrated virtual database and a simple system which searches and edits design features in a semantic way. This paper proposes a methodology for integrating modeling features of CAD systems.

With the advancements of the Internet and CAD data translation techniques, more CAD models are transferred from a CAD system to another through the network and interoperability is getting a common word in the CAD industry. However, when a CAD model is translated for an incompatible system into a neutral format such as STEP or IGES, its precious feature information is lost. When this feature information is lost, the advantage of feature based modeling is not valid any longer, and modification for the model is purely dependent on geometric and topological manipulations. However, the capabilities of the existing methods to modify these feature-independent models are limited as the modification involves a topological change in the model. To address this issue, we present a volumetric method to modify the solid models in neutral format. First, this method selectively decomposes the solid model to separate the portion of interest called feature volume. Next, the designer modifies the feature volume without concerning a topological change. Finally, the feature volume is united with the original solid model to complete the modification process. The results of test cases are presented to attest the usefulness of the proposed method.
