  • Six malformin B's produced by Aspergillus niger van Tiegh. were separated by HPLC. Their structures determined by the methods of amino acid analyses, mass spectrometry, and two-dimensional NMR were revealed as cyclic pentapeptides structurally related to malformin $A_1$. Both the NMR and MS/MS data suggest that the respective structures of separated malformin B's were as follows; cyclo-D-Cys-D-Cys-L-Val-D-Leu-L-allo-Ile for $B_{1a}$, cyclo-D-Cys-D-Cys-L-Val-D-Leu-L-Leu for $B_{1b}$, cyclo-D-Cys-D-Cys-L-Val-D-Val-L-Leu for $B_2$, cyclo-D-Cys-D-Cys-L-Val-D-Ile-L-Leu for $B_3$, cyclo-D-Cys-D-Cys-L-Val-D-Ile-L-Ile for $B_4$, and cyclo-D-Cys-D-Cys-L-Val-D-Val-L-Ile for $B_5$. Among the malformin B's, the structure of $B_{1b}$ was the same as that of malformin $A_3$ or C. All the malformin B's showed physiological activities in the two assay systems using corn(Zea mays L.) roots and mung bean(Phaseolus aureus Roxb.) hypercotyl segments. The malformin B's with molecular weight 529 were more effective for inducing corn root curvature than those with molecular weight 515. The difference in molecular weight of malformin B's, i.e., the retention time on HPLC, results in the polarity change of the whole malformin molecule which affects the revealation of the malformin activities. In addition, the disulfide form of the malformin B's gives the rigidity of the molecule, whereas the combination of the fourth and the fifth amino acid residues provides the optimal three-dimensional configuration to the malformin receptor of plants. Presumably, these two factors are appeared to be essential for the greatest physiological activity of malformin B's. malformin $B_{1a}$ caused the corn root curvature by 90% at a concentration of $0.25{\mu}M$. However, such differential activities with molecular weight of 529 or 515 of malformin B's were not found in the mung bean hypercotyl segment test. Maximum stimulation of mung bean hypercotyl growth was observed at $0.1{\mu}M$ concentration of malformin B's. The growth of the segments treated with $B_5$ was 154% greater than that of the control.

  • To quantitatively estimate the influence of cuttlebone on the target strength (TS) of golden cuttlefish, the cuttlebone was carefully extracted from 19 live cuttlefish caught using traps in the inshore waters around Geojedo, Korea, in early May 2010 and the TS was measured using split-beam echosounders (Simrad ES60 and EY500). The TS-length relationships for the cuttlefish (before the extraction of cuttlebone, Fish Aquat Sci. 17:361-7, 2014) and the corresponding cuttlebone were compared. The cuttlebone length ($L_b$) ranged from 151 to 195 mm (mean $L_b$ = 168.3 mm) and the mass ($W_b$) ranged from 29.3 to 53.2 g (mean $W_b$ = 38.8 g). The mean TS values at 70 and 120 kHz were -33.60 dB (std = 1.12 dB) and -32.24 dB (std = 1.87 dB), respectively. The mean TS values of cuttlebone were 0.19 dB and 0.04 dB lower than those of cuttlefish at 70 and 120 kHz, respectively. For 70 and 120 kHz combined, the mean TS value of cuttlebone was -32.87 dB, 0.11 dB lower than that of cuttlefish (-32.76 dB). On the other hand, the mean TS value of cuttlebone predicted by the regression ($TS_b$ = 24.86 $log_{10}$ $L_b$ - 4.86 $log_{10}$ ${\lambda}$ - 22.58, $r^2$ = 0.85, N = 38, P < 0.01) was -33.10 dB, 0.04 dB lower than that of cuttlefish predicted by the regression ($TS_c$ = 24.62 $log_{10}$ $L_c$ - 4.62 $log_{10}$ ${\lambda}$ - 22.64, $r^2$ = 0.85, N = 38, P < 0.01). That is, the contribution of cuttlebone to the cuttlefish TS determined by the measured results was slightly greater than that by the predicted results. These results suggest that cuttlebone is responsible for the TS of cuttlefish, and the contribution is estimated to be at least 99 % of the total echo strength.

  • The present paper studied neurosecretory cell types and their seasonal secretory activity in the eyestalk of Palaemon macrodactylus. The samples were monthly collected in Nakdong estuary for one year. The eyestalk consisted of lamina ganglionaris, medulla externa medulla interna, and medulla terminaris. four types of neurosecretory, A-, B-, C- and D-cells are found in the eyestalk. The A-cells are located in the medulla externs. Althoush the B- and C-cells are located in the medulla interna and medulla terminalis, B-cells are predominant in medulla interna and C-cells are usually distributed in medulla terminaris. The size of D-cells are larger than other types of cells in size. The neurosecretory cells except D-cells show a remarkable change with month. The A-, B-, and C-cells are activated from March and April to July, and decreased at August.

  • Annealing effects on the permeability aftereffect(disaccommodation) of liquid quenched single strip $Fe_{73.5}Cu_1Nb_3Si_{16}B_{6.5}$ alloys were investigated with pulse method. The initial susceptibility X, $B_{10},$ (the flux density at 10 Oe) and disaccommodation intensity D (D = [X(1 s)-X(64 s)]/X(1 s), where X(1 s) and X(64 s) are the susceptibility of 1 and 64 s of rest time after A. C. demagnetization) were about 800, 0.8 T and 16 %, respectively. The soft magnetic properties were improved with isothermal annealing for 1 hour at $300{\sim}600^{\circ}C.$ X, $B_{10},$ and D at $570^{\circ}C$ of optimum annealing temperature were 15000, 1.2 T and 1.1 %, respectively. The origin of the change of characteristics were examined with fine crystalline structure and magnetostriction.

  • In this paper, FG-CPW (Finite-Ground Coplanar Wave-Guide) balanced diode mixer is presented. Frequency bandwidth is selected for a C-band, which is 5.72~5.82 GHz for RF, 5.58~5.68 GHz for LO, and 140 MHz for IF signals. A rat-race hybrid is designed for the accomplishment of single balanced type. A low pass filter (LPF) with CPW structure is used far good conversion loss and unwanted harmonics suppression. When LO signal with the power of 4 dBm at 5.635 GHz is injected, a conversion loss of 6.2 dB is obtained for the mixer. Also, the LO to RF and LO to IF isolation of 30 dB and 40 dB are obtained, respectively. This mixer can be used in the area on wireless LAN application.

  • This study was carried out to examine characteristics of various acoustic indicators evaluating speech intelligibility such as reverberation time(T30), D50, C50 and speech transmission index(STI) in Korean elementary school classrooms. Results showed that mean T30 at middle frequencies(500 Hz to 2000 Hz) measured in 9 classrooms was about 0.75 s, which exceeds a regulation specified on American National Standards(ANSI); 0.60 s. Mean D50, C50 and STI were 60 % to 66 %, +2 dB to +3 dB, and 0.65, respectively. The maximum difference in D50 and C50 according to different receiver points in a classroom was 13 % and 2.5 dB, while the maximum difference in T30 was 0.03 s. Whereas STI measured in classrooms has relatively low correlation with other indicators, correlation between D50 and C50 was high, R2=.9964. In addition, T30 and C50 were fitted well as logarithmic regression curve with R2=.9610. It was +3.73 dB in C50 and 68 % in D50 which are the value corresponding to 0.60 s in T30 on this curve.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of increases of nutrient level of TMR on dry matter intake, digestibility, nitrogen and energy balance in growing dairy goats (Saanen). Twelve growing dairy goats weighing 17.5kg were randomly assigned to one of four TMRs; low energy-low crude protein (CP) TMR (control; A), high energy-low CP TMR (B), low energy-high CP TMR (C) and high energy-high CP TMR (D). The content of total digestible nutrients (TDN) and CP in the control diet were 67% and 11%. The TDN content of the high energy TMR was 73.7% and the CP content of the high CP TMR was 13%. Dry matter intake was highest in D, and significantly higher in B than in C (p<0.05). Digestibility for dry matter and cell contents increased in proportion to dry matter intake. NDF digestibility was higher in D than in A, while ADF digestibility was higher in A and C than in B, but was not significant. Digestible nitrogen, apparently digested nitrogen and retained nitrogen were correlated with intake, and significantly higher in B than in C (p<0.05). Digestible energy and metabolizable energy were highest in D, and significantly higher in B than in C (p<0.05). Therefore, the present results showed that D or B were better than C for high intake, digestibility, nitrogen and energy utilization.
