  • The th ermal and optical properties of multicomponent oxide glass optical fiber by adding heavy metal oxide Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$(0-20wt%) were investigated. The fiber samples were made by the method of rod in tube. The optical loss of fiber was measured in 0.3-1.8.mu.m wavelength region. As Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$ increased up to 20wt%, the transition and softening temperature of bulk glass were increased from 495.deg. C to 579.deg. C and from 548.deg. C to 641.deg. C, respectively. Whereas the thermal expansion coefficient was decreased from 102 to 79.1x10$^{-7}$ /.deg. C. The refractive index was increased from 1.621 to 1.665, and IR cut-off wavelength was enlarged from 4.64.mu.m to 6.1.mu.m. The optical loss of fiber was remarkably decreased in 1.146.mu.m-1.8.mu.m wavelength region.

  • Two major cellulase components purified with sephadex G-75 and DEAE sepharose were applied to bleached kraft pulp to inverstigate the change of fiber properties. Cellulose viscosity was very sensitive to $C_x$ component treatment (more than 15% drop was observed) while being little influenced by $C_1$, component (only 2% drop). Fiber fraction longer than 2mm was reduced by $C_x$ treatment while short fiber fraction was increased greatly by more than 15%. There was little change in fiber length distribution by combined treatment of $C_1$ 1 and $C_x$ at equal. In this case, fine contents increased by more than 2.5% at equivalent refining time. WRV and Density were increased as the amount of $C_1$ or $C_x$ treatment was increased. $C_{x}$ was main cause for increasing them. But the effect fell as enzyme dosage.

  • Polyaluminocarbosilane was synthesized by direct reaction of polydimethylsilane with aluminum(III)-acetylacetonate in the presence of zeolite catalyst. A fraction of higher molecular weight polycarbosilane was formed due to the binding of aluminium acetylacetonate radicals with the polycarbosilane backbone. Small amount of Si-O-Si bond was observed in the as-prepared polyaluminocarbosilane as the result. Polyaluminocarbosilane fiber was obtained through a melt spinning and was pyrolyzed and sintered into SiC fiber from $1200{\sim}2000^{\circ}C$ under a controlled atmosphere. The nucleation and growth of ${\beta}-SiC$ grains between $1400{\sim}1600^{\circ}C$ are accompanied with nano pores formation and residual carbon generation. Above $1800^{\circ}C$, SiC fiber could be sintered to give a fully crystallized ${\beta}-SiC$ with some ${\alpha}-SiC$.

  • This study evaluated the mechanical performance, shrinkage crack and fire resistance of hybrid fiber (blended steel and polypropylene fiber with different diameter and length) reinforced concrete at elevated temperature. The compressive, splitting tensile, flexural, plastic shrinkage test were conducted to the evaluate the mechanical properties and the resistance of shrinkage crack. Also, the surface investigation, reduction rate of mass and residual compressive test were performed to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties after 400$^{\circ}C$, 600$^{\circ}C$, 800$^{\circ}C$ and 1,200$^{\circ}C$ exposure. Test results showed that the hybrid fiber reinforced concrete improved the mechanical performance, shrinkage crack and fire resistance. The reduction of performance with a temperature change were high at the temperature of $600\sim800^{\circ}C$.

  • The PAN (Polyacrylonitrile) based carbon fiber-ceramic composites (CFCC) were prepared from mixtures of short carbon fibers, phenolic resin and ceramic binder. The effects of carbonization temperature of a pre-cursor fiber, the stabilized PAN fiber, on the specific surface area and the bending strength of the activated CFCC were studied in this work. The precursor fiber was carbonized at 80$0^{\circ}C$ and 100$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The CFCC were activated at 85$0^{\circ}C$ in carbon dioxide for 10~90 minutes. As the burn-off of the activated CFCC made of the precursor fiber carbonized at 80$0^{\circ}C$ was increased from 37% to 76%, the specific surface area in-creased from 493m2/g to 1090m2/g, and the bending strength decreased from 4.5MPa to 1.4MPa. These values were about two times larger than those of the activated CFCC of which precursor fiber was car-bonized at 100$0^{\circ}C$. The effects of carbonization temperature of a precursor fiber on the specific surface area and bending strength of the activated CCFC were explained by bonding force between carbon fiber and car-bonized phenolic resin as well as by relative shirnkage between carbon fiber and ceramic film.

  • The novel carbon coating process for interlayer of fiber reinforced ceramic composites between fiber and matrix was performed by carbonizing phenolic resin solution that coated on fiber surface in $N_2$ atmosphere at $600^{\circ}C$ to improve the strength and fracture toughness of CMC(ceramic matrix composite). 160 nm carbon layer was coated on fiber surface with 5 vol% of phenolic resin solution. Since the process temperature ($600^{\circ}C$) is lower than chemical vapor deposition($900{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$), the strength and toughness could be preserved. Furthermore the coating thickness uniformity was improved to 8% of deviation along the stacking sequence. Therefore, prevention from fiber degradation during coating process and controlling coating thickness uniformity along the preform depth were achieved by coating with phenolic resin carbonizing method.

  • We demonstrate a fiber-optic sensor scheme, capable of the simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature using a single fiber Bragg grating written in an erbium: ytterbium-doped fiber. This novel and compact fiber grating based sensor scheme can be used for synchronous measurement of strain and temperature over ranges of $1100\;{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ and $50-180\;^{\circ}C$ with rms errors of $55.8\;{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ and $3^{\circ}C$, respectively. The simple and low-cost sensor approach has a considerable potential, particularly for wide-range strain sensing applications in which high resolution is not required.

  • Environment-friendly composites reinforced with bagasse fiber (BF), a kind of natural fiber as the remains from squeezed sugarcane, were fabricated by injection molding and press molding. As appropriate matrices for injection molding and press molding, polypropylene (PP) and polycaprolactone-cornstarch (PCL-C) were selected, as a typical recyclable resin and biodegradable resin, respectively. The mechanical properties of BF/PP composites were investigated in view of fiber mass fraction and injection molding conditions. And the mechanical properties and the biodegradation of BF/PCL composites were also evaluated. In the case of injection molding, the flexural modulus increased with an increase in fiber mass fraction, and the mechanical properties decreased with an increase in cylinder temperature due to the thermal degradation of BF. The optimum conditions increasing the flexural properties and the impact strength were $90^{\circ}C$ mold temperature, 30 s injection interval, and in the range of 165 to $185^{\circ}C$ cylinder temperature. On the other hand, as to BF/PCL-C fully-green composites, both the flexural properties and the impact strength increased with an increase in fiber mass fraction. It is considered that the BF compressed during preparation could result in the enhancement in mechanical properties. The results of the biodegradability test showed the addition of BF caused the acceleration of weight loss, which increased further with increasing fiber content. This reveals that the addition and the quantities of BF could promote the biodegradation of fully-green composites.
