  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to determine the absolute value of the root/crown ratio (R/C ratio) using panoramic radiographs (PRGs) in a healthy Korean population. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In total, 99 patient radiographs (of 50 males and 49 females subjects; aged 16 to 24 years old) were examined, and 2,770 teeth were analyzed. Crown lengths and root lengths were measured with modified Lind's measurements using PACS tools by two examiners in two separate sessions two months apart. All data were analyzed using SPSS. The independent t-test was used to assess for gender differences, and the paired t-test was used to compare both arches with a significance level of P<.05. RESULTS. The mean R/C ratios varied from 1.29 to 1.89 (male: 1.28-1.84; females: 1.31-1.94). The highest R/C ratios were recorded for the mandibular canines (1.89), followed by the maxillary canines (1.79). The lowest R/C ratios were recorded for the maxillary second molars (1.31). In comparison with the maxillary teeth (1.29-1.78), the mandibular teeth yielded the higher R/C ratio (1.47-1.89), and this difference was significant in the females (P<.05). The difference between the genders was not statistically significant, except for the maxillary central incisors, mandibular canines and mandibular first premolars. CONCLUSION. These data may enhance the understanding of the clinical R/C ratio as a useful guideline for determining the status of teeth and the ethnic difference.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate isokinetic strength changes of knee joint in accordance with short-term weight loss of wrestlers. For this purpose, 14 male wrestlers of a K technical high school in B city participated in our research. The wrestlers were divided into two groups; one group of the wrestlers didn't lose any weight, and the other lost over 5% of their weights. The isokinetic strength was also observed before and after weight loss. The isokinetic strenght test were processed at test speed of the$60^{\circ}C$/sec, $90^{\circ}C$/sec, and $250^{\circ}C$/sec with the CYBEX NORM system(Cybex 770+TMS, USA). Peak torque, peak torque %BW, total work, total work %BW, and endurance ratio were measured. Results showed that the isokinetic strength after the short-term weight loss of wrestlers decreased meaningfully Although endurance ratio didn't show any meaningful difference in our research, but more accurate research may find out the relationship between short-term weight loss and the endurance ratio of isokinetic strength.

  • Comprehensive numerical computations are made of a homogenous spin-up in a cylindrical cavity with a time-dependent rotation rate. Numerical solutions are acquired to the governing axisymmetric cylindrical Navier-Stokes equation. A rotation rate formula is ${\Omega}_f={\Omega}_i+{\Delta}{\Omega}(1-{\exp}(-t/t_c))$. If $t_c$ is large, it implies that a rotation change rate is small. The Ekman number, E, is set to $10^{-4}$ and the aspect ratio, R/H, fixed to I. For a linear spin-up(${\epsilon}<<$), the major contributor to spin-up in the interior is not viscous-diffusion term but inviscid term, especially Coriolis term, though $t_c$ is very large. The viscous-diffusion term only works near sidewall. But for spin-up from rest, when $t_c$ is very large, viscous-diffusion term affects interior area as well as sidewall, initially. So azimuthal velocity of interior for large $t_c$ appears faster than that of interior for relatively small $t_c$. However, the viscous-diffusion term of interior decreases as time increases. Instead, inviscid term appears in the interior.

  • Biological nutrient removal(BNR) process used in this study, which was packed with EPS(expanded polystylene) media, has more many advantages in aspect of reducing hydraulic retention time(HRT) of the process and having less effect of temperature in the winter season than commercial process in the present. Bench-scale study was performed using domestic wastewater. In the results, it was observed that the T-N removal efficiencies in HRT 6 hr and HRT 4 hr were 55% and 51%, respectively, showing the small reduction (about 4%) of T-N removal efficiency according to shortening of HRT. In comparison of T-N removal characteristic in summer and winter seasons, it showed that T-N removal efficiencies in summer and winter seasons were 65% and 54%, respectively, showing the 11% lower T-N removal efficiency in winter season than in summer season due to deterioration of nitrification in winter season. In the studies of influent loading rate and C/N ratio, the process showed stable effluent quality under the condition of broad influent loading rate and C/N ratio. Therefore, it is anticipated that the developed process in this study could be applicable to small wastewater treatment plant in nutrient removal.

  • An excess application of N fertilizer causes physiological and morphological disorder known as ammonium ($NH_4{^+}$) toxicity in Chinese cabbage and it has been to be an issue for appropriate N fertilizer management. Hence, the pot experiment was conducted in order to evaluate the alleviating effect of the application of the easily decomposable carbohydrate on $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity in Chinese cabbage. Four levels of urea at 0, 160, 320, and $640kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$, represented as T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively, were applied. In order to evaluate the alleviating effect of the application of the easily decomposable carbohydrate (sucrose) at T3 and T4 where $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity had occurred, five levels of sucrose were applied to meet C/N ratios of 0, 2, 4, 6, and 10, respectively. Our results showed that the $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity was observed at T3 and T4 at 5 days after treatment (DAT). $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity contributed to decrease fresh weight, length of leaves, length of root, and number of leaves significantly (p<0.05). The application of sucrose as a source of mitigating $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity had a good performance at T3 with the alleviating effect as 73 % and reduced in $NH_4{^+}-N$ content in soil at 29 DAT. In the maximum N rate of T4, however, sucrose application recovered it as 32 % only compared to T2 even though the same C/N ratio was treated. Consequently, sucrose as the easily decomposable carbohydrate played crucial role to reduce $NH_4{^+}$ concentration in soil and finally alleviated $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity in plant.

  • $^{13}C$ NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) measurements have been performed to investigate the local electronic structure of a superconducting graphite intercalation compound $CaC_6$ ($T_c$ = 11.4 K). A large number of single crystals were stacked and sealed in a quartz tube for naturally abundant $^{13}C$ NMR. The spectrum, Knight shift, linewidth, and spin-lattice relaxation time $T_1$ were measured in the normal state as a function of temperature down to 80 K at 8.0 T perpendicular to the c-axis. The $^{13}C$ NMR spectrum shows a single narrow peak with a very small Knight shift. The Knight shift and the linewidth of the $^{13}C$ NMR are temperature-independent around, respectively, +0.012% and 1.2 kHz. The spin-lattice relaxation rate, $1/T_1$, is proportional to temperature confirming a Korringa behavior as for non-magnetic metals. The Korringa product is measured to be $T_1T\;=\;210\;s{\cdot}K$. From this value, the Korringa ratio is deduced to be $\xi$ = 0.73, close to unity, which suggests that the independent-electron description works well for $CaC_6$, without complications arising from correlation and many-body effects.

  • Treatment duration of 12 pepper species by 3, 5, 7 days examined result, optimum processor of 12 pepper cultivars and carrier : water proportion was difference in species. However, radicle protrusion during priming(RPDP) does not happened and heightens germination rate, and Wang and Manitta species were 1:3(ratio), 7 day by treated that can shorten $T_{50}$, and all of the 10 cultivars were regard to processing of 1:7(ratio), 3 days was make satisfactory progress. Also cultivars of Jongggip was investigated by cultivars which germination rate and $T_{50}$ according to treatment duration and water proportion was irregular tendency than other cultivars. It was suggested that $20^{\circ}C$ was stable to radical protrusion and improved germination, while from $15^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$ examined.

  • The distributions and content of geometrical isomers of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) in dairy foods such as milk, yogurt, and cheese, produced or being sold in the Quebec province of Canada, were investigated by gas chromatographic analysis. The mean contents of total CLA (mg/g fat) were $5.06{\pm}0.74$ in 4 low-fat milk samples, $14.14{\pm}4.95$ in 6 yogurt samples, and $18.22{\pm}7.89$ in 5 natural ripened cheeses. Among the yogurt samples, YY contained the highest content of total CLA ($20.68{\pm}5.17\;mg/g$ fat). Among the cheese samples, Gruyere contained the highest amount of total CLA ($29.86{\pm}0.62$) as well as c-9,t-11 ($22.03{\pm}0.36\;mg/g$ fat), followed by Jarlsberg ($22.76{\pm}0.14$), Provolone ($16.42{\pm}0.52$), Cheddar ($13.83{\pm}0.81$), and Swiss ($8.23{\pm}1.11$). Based on the distribution ratios of CLA isomers in these dairy foods, the c-9,t-11 isomer appeared to be the major CLA isomer in both the low-fat milk ($89.87{\pm}2.39%$) and yogurt ($90.98{\pm}4.42%$). In the cheeses, however, the ratio of c-9,t-11 ($54.86{\pm}13.06%$) was slightly higher than that of c-10,c-12 ($40.81{\pm}13.40%$).
