  • The failure pressure for corroded pipeline was measured by burst testing and classified with respect to corrosion sizes and corroded regions - the body, the girth weld and the seam weld of pipe. A series of finite element analyses were performed to obtain a limit load solution for corrosion defects on the basis of burst test. As a result, the criteria for failure assessment of corrosion defect within the body, the girth weld and the seam weld of API 5L X65 gas pipeline were proposed.

  • Evaluation of the performance of aging structures is essential in the oil and gas industry, where the inaccurate prediction of structural performance can have significantly hazardous consequences. The effects of structure failure due to the significant reduction in wall thickness, which determines the burst strength, make it very complicated for pipeline operators to maintain pipeline serviceability. In other words, the serviceability of gas pipelines and elbows needs to be predicted and assessed to ensure that the burst or collapse strength capacities of the structures remain less than the maximum allowable operation pressure. In this study, several positions of the corrosion in a subsea elbow made of API X42 steel were evaluated using both design formulas and numerical analysis. The most hazardous corrosion position of the aging elbow was then determined to assess its serviceability. The results of this study are applicable to the operational and elbow serviceability needs of subsea pipelines and can help predict more accurate replacement or repair times.

  • The analysis methods of blast analysis models are classified into direct analysis and indirect analysis, and the latter is divided into semi-empirical and numerical analysis methods. In order to evaluate the applicability of the ELS blast analysis program, which is a program for analyzing the semi-empirical models, this study selected a simplified analytical model and examined the blast load characteristics of free-air burst explosion and surface burst explosion by using AT-Blast, RC-Blast, and Kinney and Graham's empirical equations, which are the semi-empirical analysis programs. As a result of analyzing the explosion pressure for the scaled distance and the incidence angle for the simplified analytical model, an appropriate analysis can be performed when the range of the scaled distance in the free-air burst explosion analysis was 0.3~0.461 and when the range of the scaled distance in the surface burst explosion analysis was 0.378~0.581. In terms of the incidence angle, the results analyzed within $45^{\circ}$ were considered to be appropriate.

  • Operating experience of steam generators shows that the tubes are degraded by stress corrosion cracking, fretting wear and so on. These defected tubes could stay in service if it is proved that the tubes have sufficient structural margin to preclude the risk of tube bursting. This paper provides detailed plastic limit pressure solutions for through-wall cracks in the steam generator tubes. These are developed based on three dimensional(3D) finite element analyses assuming elastic-perfectly plastic material behavior. Both axial and circumferential through-wall cracks in free span and in u-bend regions are considered. The resulting limit pressure solutions are given in a polynomial form, and thus can be simply used in practical integrity assessment of the steam generator tubes.

  • A hydraulic test on a filament wound case of Kick-Motor was conducted to evaluate the structural stiffness degradation and to confirm the burst performance. Failure criteria have been defined with bursting above 150% of MEOP(Maximum Expected Operation Pressure) and failure in the cylinder. The analysis result showed that filament fiber in the cylinder should be broken at about 2088psig. From a hydraulic test it has been verified that composite case meets the failure requirements, and that the stiffness does not decrease even after a year since the manufacturing.

  • Volute casings for liquid rocket turbopump are designed and evaluated in a structural point of view. At the design step 3D modeling and finite element analyses are conducted iteratively. During the step various loads such as internal pressure, casing stiffness and mounting forces are considered in the analyses, along with the weight minimization effort. After the design step volute casings are manufactured by metal casting process, and then they are subjected to burst test for structural verification. In the burst test strains at several points are measured and compared with predicted values.

  • This paper shows the Development of In-tank pressure regulator and Solenoid Valve used in FCV(Fuel Cell Vehicle). We have developed new type of Regulator and Solenoid through analysis of the structure and characteristics of component of FCS(Fuel Cell System) from the advanced technology. Now it is possible to localize the component by making use of the development of Regulator and Solenoid made by us. Regulator and Solenoid is a equipment to control hydrogen pressure supplied into a stack. Therefore, outlet pressure, a flow of fluid and temperature are important parameters according to a inlet pressure. And leak test, endurance test and burst test should be done to guarantee the performance and safety of Regulator and Solenoid used in the fuel of high pressure. Also, Hydrogen friendly materials are applied to inner parts of the Regulator, Solenoid and weight reduction is done to cost saving in part not related to performance. As a result, we have proven the good performance and reliability in endurance of Regulator, Solenoid and will make an development in performance as well as durability to ensure industrialization.

  • The objective of study on composite cylinder for alternative fuel vehicle is to develop safe, efficient, and commercially viable, on-board fuel storage system for the fuel cell vehicle or natural gas vehicle that use highly compressed gaseous fuel such as hydrogen or natural gas. This study presents the whole procedure of development and certification of a type 3 composite cylinder of 207bar service pressure and 70 liter water capacity, which includes design/analysis, processing of filament winding, and validation through various testing and evaluation. Design methods of liner configuration and winding patterns are presented. Three dimensional, nonlinear finite element analysis techniques are used to predict burst pressure and failure mode. Design and analysis techniques are verified through burst and cycling tests. The full qualification test methods and results for validation and certification are presented.

  • CNG buses were introduced in 2002 to reduce air pollution to the big cities. The durability and safety evaluation were performed for the NGV-2 type cylinders taken from two buses after 30 months of running. No external damage and no internal corrosion was observed on the container surfaces. Defect exceeding the allowable limit was not found in the UT test. Permanent volume expansion was about 1.2% which is much smaller than the required design limit. Cycling test showed no failure after 11,250cycles and burst pressures were still above the maximum design pressure. Both the longitudinal and circumferential failure mode were observed, where both the fracture strengths were far above the design limit. This study showed the present CNG fuel cylinders were safe enough for further usage.
