In burst OFDM system, the frame synchronization should be performed first for the acquisition of received frame and the estimation of the correct FFT-window position. The conventional frame synchronization algorithms using design features of the preamble symbol, the repetition pattern of the OFDM symbol by pilot sub-carrier allocation rule and Cyclic Prefix(CP), has difficulty in the detection of precise frame timing because its correlation characteristics would increase and decrease gradually. Also, the algorithm based on the correlation between the reference signal and the received signal has performance degradation due to frequency offset. Therefore, we adopt a differential correlation method that is robust to frequency offset and has the clear peak value at the correct frame timing for frame synchronization. However, performance improvement is essential for differential correlation methods, since it usually shows multiple peak values due to the repetition pattern. In this paper, we propose an enhanced frame synchronization algorithm based on the differential correlation method that shows a clear single peak value by using differential correlation between samples of identical repeating pattern. We also introduce a normalization scheme which normalizes the result of differential correlation with signal power to reduce the frame timing error in the high speed mobile channel environments.

In wireless network environments, wireless channels are characterized by time-varying fading and interference conditions, which may lead to burst packet corruptions and delay variation. This can cause severe quality degradation of streaming media. To guarantee successful transmission of media over the hostile wireless networks, where channel conditions are highly fluctuating, a flexible and network-adaptive transport method is required. Thus, we propose a network-adaptive transport error control consisting of packet-level interleaved FEC and delay-constrained ARQ, which acts as an application-level transport method of streaming media to alleviate burst packet losses while adapting to the changing channel condition in wireless networks. The performances of the proposed network-adaptive transport error control, general error control schemes, and hybrid schemes are evaluated by a developed simulator at the transport-level and video quality of streaming media. Simulation results show that the proposed mechanism provides the best overall performance among compared other schemes in terms of the transport-level performance of error control and the performance of video quality for streaming media.

Underwater acoustic communication channel is often defined as a multipath fading channel since the multipath arrivals from various paths interfere with each other and cause frequency dependent constructive or destructive interference in received signals. Therefore signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of received signal fluctuates as a function of frequency. In addition, sea surface fluctuation induces frequency dependent time variant signal fading due to coherent component variation of surface bounce path. The frequency shift keying (FSK) system is known to be less sensitive and more robust under these interference and fading, and M-ary frequency shift keying (MFSK) system is adopted to increase a data rate. In this study, a bit error rate (BER) of 4 channels 4FSK system are examined in shallow sea multipath channel. Experimental results show that RS code reduces efficiently the BER of 4FSK system since frequency dependent time-varying fading is characterized to give burst errors. The BER of a different data rate or different source-to-receiver range depends on not only the channel coherent bandwidth but also frequency dependent multipath fading.
DVC(Distributed Video Coding) technique is a new paradigm, which is based on the Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv theorems. DVC offers not only flexible partitioning of the complexity between the encoder and decoder, but also robustness to channel errors due to intrinsic joint source-channel coding. Many conventional research works have been focused on the light video encoder and its rate-distortion performance improvement. However, in this paper, we propose a new DVC codec which is effectively applicable for error-prone environment. The proposed method adopts a quantiser without dead-zone and symmetric Gray code around zero value. Through computer simulations, the proposed method is evaluated by the bit errors position as well as the number of burst bit errors. Additionally, it is shown that the maximum and minimum transmission rate for the given application can be linearly determined by the number of bit errors.
Granule cells in dentate gyrus of hippocampus relay information from entorhinal cortex via perforant fiber to pyramidal cells in CA3 region. Their electrical activities are known to be closely associated with seizure activity as well as memory acquisition. Since action potential is a stereotypic phenomena which is based on all-or-none principle of $Na^+$ current, the neuronal firing pattern is mostly dependent on afterpotentials which follows the stereotypic $Na^+$ spike. Granule cells in dentate gyrus show afterdepolarization (ADP), while interneurons in dentate gyrus have afterhyperpolarizaton. In the present study, we investigated the ionic mechanism of afterdepolarization in hippocampal dentate granule cell. Action potential of dentate granule cells showed afterdepolarization, which was characterized by a sharp notch followed by a depolarizing hump starting at about $-49.04{\pm}1.69\;mV\;(n=43,\;mean{\pm}SD)$ and lasting $3{\sim}7$ ms. Increase of extracellular $Ca^{2+}$ from 2 mM to 10 mM significantly enhanced the ADP both in amplitude and in duration. A $K^+$ channel blocker, 4-aminopyridine (4-AP, 2 mM), enhanced the ADP and often induced burst firings. These effects of 10 mM $Ca^{2+}$ and 4-AP were additive. On the contrary, the ADP was significantly suppressed by removal of external $Ca^{2+},$ even in the presence of 4-AP (2 mM). A $Na^+$ channel blocker, TTX (100 nM), did not affect the ADP. From these results, it is concluded that the extracellular $Ca^{2+}$ influx contributes to the generation of ADP in granule cells.

An interleaver rearranges a channel-encoded data in the symbol unit to spread burst errors occurred in channels into random errors. Thus, the interleaving process makes it difficult for a receiver, who does not have information of the interleaver parameters used in the transmitter, to de-interleave an unknown interleaved signal. Recently, various researches on the reconstruction of an unknown interleaved signal have been studied in many places of literature by estimating the interleaver parameters. They, however, have been mainly focused on the estimation of the block interleaver parameters required to reconstruct the de-interleaver. In this paper, as an extension of the previous researches, we estimate the convolutional interleaver parameters, e.g., the number of shift registers, a shift register depth, and a codeword length, required to de-interleave the unknown data stream, and propose the de-interleaving procedure by reconstructing the de-interleaver.

In the recent years, due to long-lasting heavy rainfall events, a large number of landslides have been observed in the mountainous area of the world. Such landslides can also form a dam as it blocks the course of a river, which may burst and cause a catastrophic flood. Numerical analysis of landslide dam formation is rarely available, while laboratory experimental studies often use assumed shape to analyze the landslide dam failure and flood hydraulics in downstream. In this study, both experimental and numerical studies have been carried out to investigate the formation of landslide dam. Two case laboratory experiments were conducted in two flumes simultaneously. The first flume (2.0 m 0.6 m 0.5 m) was set at $22^{\circ}$ and $27^{\circ}$ slope to generate the landslide using rainfall intensity of 70.0 mm/hr. On the other hand, the second flume (1.5 m 0.25 m 0.3 m) was set perpendicularly at the downstream end of the first flume to receive the landslide mass forming landslide dam. The formation of landslide dam was observed at $15^{\circ}$ slope of the second flume. The whole processes including the landslide initiation and movement of the landslide mass into the second channel was captured by three digital cameras. In numerical analysis, a two-dimensional (2D) seepage flow model, a 2D slope stability model (Spencer method) and a 2D landslide dam-geometry evaluation model were coupled as a single unit. This developed model can determine the landslide occurrence time, the failure mass and the geometry of landslide dam deposited in the second channel. The data obtained from numerical simulation results has good agreement with the experimental measurements.

This paper is about the research to maintain and enhance the flow of data of the wireless traffic control. Various types of burst traffic that were found at TCP window flow control have been removed or mitigated using the two-way traffic control. Currently, TCP ACK Compression problem appears during the transmission of the wireless communication control channel because the queues are mostly located at the end system. Therefore, in this paper, the periodic bursty characterist of the source IP queue wilt be analyzed to predict the maximum value of queues. And then the prediction tool will be applied to wireless communication traffic control to handle symmetric traffic as to increase the throughput and improve the performance.

In this paper, a contention-based reservation access control algorithm and a slot allocation algorithm are proposed for non-real-time bursty traffic services in the wireless ATM networks. In order to reduce the collisions of the reservation request packets, the base station scheduler calculates the transmission probability using the number of RAS minislots and the estimated load of the reservation request packets. And it broadcasts the calculated transmission probability over the downlink control channel. Mobile terminals, which have traffic burst, select randomly a RAS minislot and transmit the reservation request packet by the received transmission probability. The reservation request packet contains the number of packets in the buffer. The slot allocation is based on the buffer status of the received reservation request packets. The base station scheduler allocates slots in proportion to the total number of slots that are requested by each terminal.

In this paper, a channel access control algorithm and a slot allocation algorithm are proposed as MAC protocol for multimedia services in TDMA/TDD-based wireless ATM networks. In the proposed protocol, VBR terminals that require real-time services transmit a reservation request through a random access minislot. VBR terminals, which are successfully transmitted the reservation request, transmits the dynamic parameters through a dynamic parameter minislot without contention. On the other hand, ABR terminals transmit a reservation request with contention basis whenever a non-real-time traffic burst is generated. Based on the received dynamic parameters and the number of requested slots, the base station scheduler allocates a dynamic parameter minislot as well as uplink data slots into VBR terminals. Also the scheduler allocates uplink data slots into ABR terminals in proportion to the number of requested slots.
