Purpose: We accessed epidemioloy of 908 acute burns (7 years) in the military, of injuries and propose proper educational programs to suit community. Methods: We surveyed burn demographics, circumstances of injuries, size, result of treatment. Results: The mean age was 20.6 years. The flame burns (FB) (325, 35.8%) were most common, followed scald (SB) (305, 33.6%), contact (CB) (219, 24.1%), electric (EB) (45, 5.0%) and chemical burns (ChB) (14, 1.5%). The more occurred during winter (29.7%). SB had mean 3.9% total body surface area (TBSA). The 251 (82.3%) had superficial burns by spillage of hot water/food on lower limbs (45.6%), feet (33.8%) in summer (34.8%), treated with simple dressing (92.8%). Morbidity rate was 5.6%; post traumatic stress disease (PTSD) (0.7%). FB had large wound (9.3% TBSA). The 209 (64.3%) had superficial burns by ignition to flammable oils (31.7%) and bomb powders (29.2%) on head/neck (60.3%), hands (58.6%) in summer (31.7%), autumn (30.2%). They underwent simple dressing (83.4%) and skin graft (16.0%). Morbidity rate was 18.8%; PTSD (10.5%), inhalation injuries (4.0%), corneal injury (3.7%), amputations (0.9%), and mortality rate (1.2%). CB had small (1.1% TBSA), deep burns (78.5%) by hotpack (80.4%) on lower limbs (80.4%). The more (59.8%) underwent skin graft. EB had 6.8% TBSA. The 29 (64.4%) had superficial burns by touching to high tension cable (71.1%) on hand (71.1%), upper limbs (24.4%) in autumn (46.8%). They underwent simple dressing (71.1%) and skin graft (24.4%). They showed high morbidity rate (40.0%); loss of consciousness (13.3%), nerve injuries (11.1%), neuropathy (8.9%), amputations (2.2%), and mortality rate (2.2%). Conclusions: The cook should wear apron over the boots during work. The lighter or smoking should be strictly prohibited during work with flammable liquids or bomb powders. Don't directly apply hotpack to skin for a long time. Use insulating glove during electric work. Keep to the basic can prevent severe injury and proper education is important.
Allogenic keratinocyte application is widely used for treatment of second degree burns. However, there is no significant body of report on application of allogenic keratinocyte to third degree burns. A geriatric patient visited our burn center showing second to third-degree burn on dorsum of her left hand. Considering the surface area and wound depth, surgery was indicated but her medical condition and age made the surgery high risk for a long operation. Therefore, chemical escharolysis, serial bedside debridement, and cultured allogenic keratinocyte (Kaloderm®, Tegoscience, Seoul, Korea) application was done. The wound was completely epithelialized after four rounds of Kaloderm® application. For third-degree burns where definitive surgical reconstruction is precluded due to medical comorbidity of the patient, we investigated the possibility of allogenic keratinocyte treatment which may allow to avoid high-risk anesthesia and surgery.
The pedicled fillet flap concept has been successfully applied in both the upper and lower extremities for the treatment of difficult wounds. However, in case of complete extremity amputation in eletrical burn patient, the transfer of pedicled flaps from the amputated part is not possible. In such instances, we have designed total arm musculocutaneous free-fillet flaps from the amputated limb to provide wound coverage, when replantation of the amputated part was contraindicated. now we present such a case. This technique allows immediate wound coverage without the morbidity of an additional donor site. The flap provides the ideal combination of large surface area, muscle bulk, and long vascular pedicle. It can be dissected rapidly to minimize ischemic time and could therefore be applicable to traumatic forequarter amputations.
Channel-aquifer interaction is one of the key hydrological processes that determine water flows in the stream/river channel. Field measurements of channel-aquifer interaction, however, is very difficult and costly, particularly when one intends to understand its variations across a catchment for a long period. Hydrological simulations using a catchment model are a relatively easier and cheaper alternative provided the model structure is appropriate for describing channel-aquifer interaction. In this study, a catchment model called CAMEL (Chemicals from Agricultural Management and Erosion Losses) is used for estimating channel-aquifer interaction over time and space. CAMEL is a distributed catchment model to simulate transformation and transport processes of sediment and pollutants as well as water flows at the catchment scale. In the model, a catchment is represented using a network of square columns each of which is comprised of various storages of water. CAMEL explicitly simulates both surface and subsurface processes including channel-aquifer interaction. This paper presents an application study results of CAMEL for the Tarland Burn Catchment, a small (catchment area $52\;km^2$) rural catchment in Scotland, UK, demonstrating some of the channel-aquifer interaction dynamics across the catchment during a 2-year period.
The modeling of combustion process is an important part in an engine simulation program. In this study, calculated results using a conventional B-K model and the other model which is called GESIM were compared with experimentally measured data of a three-cylinder spark-ignition engine under wide range of operating conditions. The burn rates calculated from the combustion models were compared with the burn rate calculated from the one-zone heat release analysis that uses measured pressure data as an input data. As a result of the two models' comparison, the GESIM combustion model conformed to be closer to the data acquired from the experiment in wide operating ranges. The GESIM model has been improved by introducing a variable that considers the flame size, the area of flame conacting the piston surface into the model, based on the comparison between the experimental result and the calculated results. The improved combustion model predicts experimental results more precisely than that of GESIM combustion model.

Purpose: This study evaluated woven silk textile for burn wound dressing materials in an animal model. Methods: Ten rats were used in this experiment. Full-thickness $2{\times}2cm$ burn wounds were created on the back of the rats under anesthesia. In the experimental group, the wounds were treated with three different dressing materials from woven silk textile. In the control group, natural healing without any dressing material was set as control. The wound surface area was measured at five days, seven days, and 14 days. Wound healing was evaluated by histologic analysis. Results: There were no statistically significant differences among groups at five days post injury. The mean defect size at seven days was largest in Group 3 ($462.87mm^2$), and smallest in Group 1 ($410.89mm^2$), not a significant difference (P=0.341). The mean defect size at 14 days was smallest at the Group 3 ($308.28mm^2$) and largest in the control group ($388.18mm^2$), not a significant difference (P=0.190). The denuded area was smaller in Group 1 ($84.57mm^2$) and Group 2 ($82.50mm^2$) compared with the control group ($195.93mm^2$), not statistically significant differences (P=0.066, 0.062). The difference between Group 3 and control was also not statistically significant (P=0.136). In histologic analysis, the experimental groups re-epithelialized more than control groups. No evidence was found of severe inflammation. Conclusion: The healing of burn wounds was faster with silk weave textile more than the control group. There was no atypical inflammation with silk dressing materials. In conclusion, silk dressing materials could be used to treat burn wounds.
Silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) powder was mixed into a reformed pitch precursor. Then, the silver-containing pitch was melt spun to form round and "C" shape fibers. A wire mesh was inserted prior to the nozzle to improve the spinnability of the silvercontaining precursor pitch. Silver particles in the carbon fibers (CFs) were detected by XRD and TEM. These tests showed that silver particles were uniformly distributed and the total amount of silver remained constant during stabilization and carbonization. Next, the silver-containing CFs were activated by steam diluted in nitrogen gas. Silver particles accelerated the activation rate, but the specific surface areas of the silver-containing ACFs were similar to those of non-silver containing ACFs at the same burn-off levels. The specific surface area of the C-shaped activated carbon fibers was larger than that of the round activated carbon fibers. The likely reason is that the surface area of a C-shaped CF is about two times larger than that of a round CF when equivalent cross-sectional areas are compared. A small amount of silver particles in the periphery of the CFs was removed during the activation, but the remainder of silver was stayed within the ACFs.
Rubber reinforcing carbon black N330 was treated by physical activation under $CO_2$ to different degrees of burn-off. The mechanical properties indicating the reinforcement of SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) vulcanizates filled by activated carbon blacks, such as tensile strength, modulus at 300% strain and elongation at break were determined. During $CO_2$ activation of fresh carbon blacks, the development of microporous structure caused an increase of extremely large specific surface area and the porosity turned out to be an increasing function of the degree of burn-off. The tensile strength and modulus at 300% of activated carbon blacks filled rubber composites were improved at lower loading ratios of 20 and 30 phr, but decreased drastically after 30 phr, which is considered that it might be difficult to get a fully dispersed rubber mixture at higher loading ratios for fillers having very large specific surface areas. However, the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of SBR rubber composites having activated carbon black at 74% yield were improved at a large extent when compared to those having raw carbon black and increased significantly as a function of increasing loading ratio.
Background The scalp, an excellent donor site for thin skin grafts, presents a limited surface but is rich in stem cells. The purpose of this study was to test a double harvesting procedure from the scalp and to evaluate the capacity of the dermal layer. Methods Two layers corresponding to a split-thickness skin graft (SSG) and a split-thickness dermal graft (SDG) were harvested from the scalp using a Zimmer dermatome during the same procedure. Healing of the scalp donor site, reason for recipient site grafting, and the percentage of graft loss were evaluated. Results Fourteen patients, comprising six men and eight women with a mean age of 34.2 years, were treated according to our protocol. The most common reason for a recipient site graft was a postburn scar deformity (10/14 patients). The mean area of scalp SSGs was 151.8 cm2. The mean area of scalp SDGs was 88.2 cm2. The mean healing time of scalp donors was 9.9 days. The only donor complication was a tufted scar deformity. Conclusions Skin defects in the scalp of donors healed faster and led to less scarring than defects at other donor sites. Scalp SDGs needed 10 days for adequate epithelization. The scalp was the best donor site for SSGs and SDGs for burn reconstructive patients.

Breast deformity, in post-burn patients, is a common problem leading to lower self-esteem and reclusive behavior that impairs quality of life. The authors present the course of treatment of an 18-year-old immigrant girl who suffered second- to third-degree burns over approximately 20% of her total body surface area in her early childhood. The second- to third-degree burns were located on her right trunk and abdomen, as well as her right shoulder, neck, and right groin area. Since it was not offered in her home country, reconstructive surgery, including microsurgical breast reconstruction, was sought abroad. Due to the lack of available skin and soft tissue, a bilateral breast reconstruction with free transverse myocutaneous gracilis flaps was offered. This case illustrates one method of using microsurgery to address post-burn breast deformities in order to alleviate psychological suffering and improve quality of life.
