  • The leachate from landfill (Andong city) contaminated by foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) contains 44%-50% hydrophilic organic matter, compared with 22%-27% in natural water bodies such as ground water, lake water, and river water. In such natural water, the organic matter content is reduced by the metabolism of microbes in the water. However, in the case of leachate-1 and -2, the concentrations of RTOC (refractory total organic carbon) and RDOC (refractory dissolved organic carbon) were higher than the initial TOC and DOC after burial. According to time elapsed after burial, the concentrations of RTOC and RDOC were decreased below the initial TOC and DOC. In the case of leachate-6 (386 days after burial), RDOC made up 91% of RTOC. This result shows that organic matter in the leachate was composed dominantly of RDOM, most of which was not removed by the metabolism of microbes. Hence, the presence and characteristics of RDOM provide a valuable indication of the effect of leachate on the quality of surface water and ground water. Such information is useful in understanding leachate environments.

  • Satellite imagery was applied to locating archeological sites and remains around northeastern areas of China, called as Manchuria, and Korean peninsular, such as Mountain Fortress of Goguryeo Dynasty era($37BC{\sim}771AD$), and firing torch and smoke beacon signal sites at mountain tops in Josun Dynasty era($1392{\sim}1910AD$) as well as burial sites below the ground level in the modern era. Information on archeological sites, fire posts and burial places could be found in various literatures, but real figures of such cultural assets have been disappearing due to land development programs and human activities in recent years. Some of these historical sites were identified in satellite images using GPS(Geographical Positioning System). Real locations of these sites would be further necessary to be verified.

  • Recently, electrical resistivity surveys have been used to obtain information related to underground structures including burial structure type and depth. However, various field conditions hinder understanding measured electrical resistance, and thus there is a need to understand how various geometries affect electrical resistance. This study explores the effect of geometric parameters of a structure and electrodes on electrical resistance in the framework of the finite element method. First, an electrical resistance module is developed using the generalized mesh modeling technique, and the accuracy of the module is verified by comparing the results with the analytical solution for a cylindrical electrode with conical tip. Then, 387 cases of numerical analysis including geometric parameters of a buried structure and electrodes are conducted to quantitatively estimate the detection depth under a steady-state current condition. The results show that electrical resistance is increased as (1) shallower burial depth of structure, (2) closer distance between ground electrode and structure, (3) longer horizontal electrode distance. In addition, the maximum detection depth corresponding to converged electrical resistance is deeper as (4) closer distance between ground electrode and structure, (5) shorter horizontal electrode distance. The distribution of the electric potential around the electrodes and underground structure is analyzed to provide a better understanding of the measured electrical resistance. As engineering purpose, the empirical equation is proposed to calculate maximum detection depth as first approximation.

  • Agricultural and municipal wastes arc serious nuisance. in Korea. Disposal of these wastes by land application, incineration or burial have created serious environmental problems such as air pollution and ground water contamination. Uncomposted waste materials are also potential sources of plant and soil pathogens. As available sites for waste burial become more difficult to find and air quality standards for incineration become stricter, composting as a method for treating solid wastes will become more attractive. This article discussed the recent topics on composting to further develop a rational strategy. The future of composting is developed based on the interacting factors of the price of energy and fertilizer, public policy, economic considerations, and biotechnology.

  • If animal disease, i.e., livestock foot-and-mouth disease, avian influenza, brings out, animals have to be disposed to prevent the virus spreading. Mainly, animals have been disposed by carcass disposal. However, If not done properly, carcass disposal can lead to environmental problems, i.e., soil and ground water pollution, etc. Therefore, various disposal methods, i.e., rendering, cremation, etc., have to be considered with burial. Also, various supplement policies are needed to prevent the animal disease. The purpose of this study was to find effective solutions for the prevention and biosecurity of animal disease.

  • Earthquake time-history analyses have been carried out for a buried gas pipeline of X65 which is of popular use in Korea. Parameters included are shape of a buried gas pipeline, soil characteristics, single and multiple earthquake input ground motions and burial depths. Predicted response of strain and relative displacement are then compared with allowable strain and displacement capacity calculated by Guidelines for the Seismic Design of Buried Gas Pipelines, KOGAS. Comparative studies show that strains are in general affected by the burial depths together with change of soil conditions. Regarding the relative displacement, while axial relative displacement is not influenced by the burial depths, transverse relative displacement is affected by both burial depths as well as soil conditions. In all, the current study is encouraged to give a useful information for healthy earthquake evaluation of a buried pipeline.

  • This paper presents a damage assesment method for buried pipelines subjected to Deep Excavation-induced ground movements. Ground deformation characteristics resulting from 3D finite element analysis was represented mathematically by a hyperbolic tangential function. A parametric study was performed on excavation depth and burial position of pipeline. The result of the parametric study indicate that length of hyperbolic tangential function affects the results of damage assessment. Using numerical studies for buried pipeline response to ground movements by relative flexibility of the pipe-soil system. The result of numerical studies are presented in forms of design charts which can be readily used for various condition encountered in practices.

  • A simplified analytical solution for seismic response of tunnel cross section in horizontally layered ground subjected to oblique incidence of SH wave is deduced in this paper. The proposed analytical solution consists of two main steps: free-field response in layered field and tunnel response. The free field responses of the layered ground are obtained by one-dimensional finite element method in time domain. The tunnel lining is treated as a thick-wall cylinder to calculate the tunnel response, which subject to free field stress. The analytical solutions are verified by comparing with the dynamic numerical results of two-dimensional ground-lining interaction analysis under earthquake in some common situations, which have a good agreement. Then, the appropriate range of the proposed analytical solution is analyzed, considering the height of the layered ground, the wavelength and incident angle of SH wave. Finally, by using the analytical solutions, the effects of the ground material, burial depth of the tunnel, and lining thickness and the slippage effect at the ground-lining interface on the seismic response of tunnels are investigated. The proposed solution could serve as a useful tool for seismic analysis and design of tunnels in layered ground.

  • In Korea, 'forest welfare' is officially included as a policy object and used as an academic term. The Korea Forest Service strives to provide a forest welfare services suitable for each life cycle from birth to death, and the public is highly aware of the need for these policies. The demand for National Woodland Burial Grounds is expected to increase as the interest in natural burials including woodland burial is increasing. As the demand for the Woodland Burial Grounds is increasing, there is only one National Woodland Burial Grounds currently available. Although other forest welfare facilities, such as natural recreation forests, must have undergone feasibility assessment according to relevant laws before approval of the designation, there are no institutions performing Woodland Burial Grounds feasibility assessments at the time. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the policies to cope with the increased demand. This study used GIS to prepare the basic data to be used in the process of selecting suitable forest locations. The area that cannot be used according to related laws was analyzed and the size of the possible areas in the state forests was assessed.
