  • The major subject of this paper is the conceptual design of a cable-buoy system based on mechanics of floating bodies and mooring lines. The goal is to present a systematic relevant analysis procedure for the conceptual design of oceanographic buoy systems. The dynamics of a free floating body with an anchoring line is studied and a model is proposed through the primary engineering.

  • An innovative design of a floating-buoy wave energy converter (WEC) using hydrostatic transmission (HST), named HSTWEC, is presented in this paper. The system is designed to convert ocean wave fluctuation into electricity by using the HST circuit and an electric generator. Based on the floating-buoy concept, the wave forces the sub-buoy to move up and down. Consequently, the electric power can be obtained from the generator in both the moving directions of the sub-buoy through the HST circuit as shown in Fig. 1. In order to investigate the HSTWEC operations, a mathematical model of the system is indispensible. In addition, the method to control the HSTWEC, including: pump displacement control, tension adjustment control and ballast weight control, is also discussed in this paper. Finally, the design concept as well as simulation results indicated that this HSTWEC design is an effective solution and possible to fabricate for wave energy generation.

  • Hull design for a small scale Oceanographic buoy will be introduced in this paper. The hull structure design, the connection methods between all parts will be discussed. We mainly introduce a design process of this buoy hull. We use walls with two layers and a radial bone structure to support the body to increase overall intensity and capacity to resist impact.

  • Ship handling simulator should have capabilities of calculating ship motions (heave, pitch, and roll) at given sea state and displaying the calculated motions through a real-time 3D visualization system. Motion solver of a ship handling simulator generally calculates those motions in addition to position for an own ship, a main simulation target, but provides only position information for traffic ships. Therefore, it is required to simulate real-time traffic ship and buoy motions coupled with ocean waves in a ship handling simulator for the realistic visualization. In the paper, the authors propose a simple dynamics model by which ship and buoy motions are calculated with the input data of wave height and discuss a method for the implementation of a ship and buoy motions calculation module.

  • A buoy is a float attached by chain to the seabed to mark channels in a harbor or underwater hazards and can be classified into two major types as autonomous buoys and fixed buoys. When there is high demand such as marking channels in a harbor, monitoring ecology of ocean and environmental monitoring of coastal areas, smart buoys are developed. The smart buoys have wireless network systems such as GPS, CDMA and ZigBee. Using the GPS techniques, location and environments of buoy can be monitored and traced. However, the GPS in fixed buoy systems has a high power consumption and cost. Using many buoys on low power ZigBee basis allows dramatic reduction of the overall power consumption. In this study, it is aimed at the design of the trackable protocol for a buoy system which has low data rate and low power consumption. The proposed protocol has advantages that it can detect abnormal movement and gather trackable information without any system changes. In the introduced protocol, additional 2 bits and join request messages are used for trackable buoy system. The behaviors of improved protocol is modeled into petri-net and proved a reachability.

  • An evaluation of the structural integrity of an oceanographic buoy subjected to extreme loads was carried out in this study. Load components, such as the current, waves, and wind load, which were required for the sea's environmental conditions, were calculated precisely. A non linear finite element analysis was conducted to elucidate the structural response of the buoy under extreme environmental conditions. Based on the surface drift velocity scheme, a dynamic impact analysis was also carried out for the case of collision accidents. The proposed numerical technique would be a useful and cost effective tool for design scheme evaluation in the field of oceanographic buoys.

  • A new conceptual dual-buoy Wave Energy Converter (WEC) for the enhancement of energy extraction efficiency is suggested. Based on actual wave data, the design process for the suggested WEC is conducted in such a way as to ensure that it is suitable in real sea. Actual wave data measured in Korea's East Sea (position: $36.404N^{\circ}$ and $129.274E^{\circ}$) from May 1, 2002 to March 29, 2005 were used as the input wave spectrum for the performance estimation of the dual-buoy WEC. The suggested WEC, a point absorber type, consists of two concentric floating circular cylinders (an inner and a hollow outer buoy). Multiple resonant frequencies in proposed WEC affect the Power Ttake-off (PTO) performance of the WEC. Based on the numerical results, several design strategies are proposed to further enhance the extraction efficiency, including intentional mismatching among the heave natural frequencies of dual buoys, the natural frequency of the internal fluid, and the peak frequency of the input wave spectrum.
