Irradiation Induced Defects in a Si-doped GaN Single Crystal by Neutron Irradiation

  • The local structure of defects in undoped, Si-doped, and neutron irradiated free standing GaN bulk crystals, grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy, has been investigated by employing electron magnetic resonance(EMR), Raman scattering and cathodoluminescence. The GaN samples were irradiated to a dose of $2{\times}10^{17}$ neutrons in an atomic reactor at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. There was no appreciable change in the Raman spectra for undoped GaN samples before and after neutron irradiation. However, a forbidden transition, $A_1$(TO) mode, appeared for a neutron irradiated Si-doped GaN crystal. Cathodoluminescence spectrum for the neutron irradiated Si-doped GaN crystal became much broader or was much more broadened than that for the unirradiated one. The observed EMR center with the g value of 1.952 in a neutron irradiated Si-doped GaN may be assigned to a Si-related complex donor.

'Hillslope Erosion Assessment using 137Cs radionuclide in Granite and Sedimentary rock basins in South Korea'

  • The soil erosion processes have estimated using spatial distribution of 137Cs radionuclide in Granite and Sedimentary Hillslopes in South Korea. The local variability of 137Cs inventory indicates that was related positively to organic matter content, clay content and water content and negatively to hydraulic permeability and slope gradient for bulk samples in different landforms within Granite and Sedimentary rock basins. The vertical variability of 137Cs inventory shows that most of 137Cs concentration and organic matter were accumulated between 0 and 2cms and gradually decrease with soil depth in incremental samples in both basins. The vertical variability of 137Cs inventories shows that 137Csinventories increase as we go to toward downslope in both basins. Finally, the soil loss values indicate that hillslope erosion processes are more intensive in Granite rock basin than those in Sedimentary rock basin.

Uranium Isotopic Ratio Analysis of U-Bearing Particulates By SIMS in CIAE

  • In this paper measurement method of uranium isotope ratio of uranium-bearing particles in swipe samples was introduced; Swipe sample screening program was proposed on the basis of studying various destructive assay and non-destructive assays. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence(XRF) system was applied to locate the deposited uranium-containing particles on the graphite support, particle's composition and size can be identified. Some isotope ratio results were compared with those of other bulk analytical methods; By measuring the same prepared sample, we got the U-particle isotopic ratio data similar to those from IAEA NWAL, indicating that our operation parameters and experimental conditions are viable and can be used for measurement of U-particle isotopic ratio from swipe samples.

Evaluation of Grain Boundary Property in Oxide Ceramics by Isothermal Capacitance Trasient Spectroscopy (ICTS법을 이용한 산화물 세라믹스에서의 입계물성평가)

  • The principle of the Isothermal Capacitance Transient Spectroscopy[ICTS] were explained to measure the electronic trap levels in oxide ceramics. The measurement apparatus and the theory of the ICTS were described in detail. The trap energy evaluation was performed for the ZnO varistor and BaTiO3 ceramics. The grain boundary interface trap levels were detected at -5$0^{\circ}C$~6$0^{\circ}C$ in the case of ZnO varistor and PTCR samples, and the bulk trap levels were detected at 2$0^{\circ}C$~60~ in BaTiO3. The trap energy levels of the above samples could be directly determined by ICTS measurement.

Characterization of Artificial Graphite Electrodes

  • Physical properties of artificial graphite electrodes were evaluated along three different directions; circumferential (X), radial (Y), and axial (Z) directions. Four kinds of commercial electrode products were used in this study for the evaluation; pole (AP) and nipple (AN) of manufacturer A, pole (BP) and nipple (BN) of manufacturer B. The mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties in X and Y directions were very similar to each other. In Z direction, however, the mechanical properties, including flexural strength and compressive strength, were higher, and electric resistance and thermal expansion were much lower than those in the other directions. The microstructures observed by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope revealed that the differences in properties by the measuring direction were caused by the preferential alignment of needle cokes along the Z direction. When comparing the properties of the electrode samples in the same direction, the mechanical properties mainly depended on the bulk density or porosity of the samples as well as preferential alignment of needle cokes.

  • Nanostructured aluminum powders were obtained by means of planetary ball milling with methanol as the Process Control Agent (PCA). The behavior, during milling, was considered measuring the microhardness and grain size at different milling times. Bulk near-full density samples were sintered using the Spark Plasma Sintering technology with different schedules: temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$, pressure of 30 MPa and 60 MPa and different modes of applying the pressure were changed in order to understand the behavior during sintering. All the samples retained their nanostructure with an increase of the grain size from about 46 up to 70-90 nm.

  • The hypereutectic Al-20 wt%Si powders including some amount of Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn were prepared by a gas atomization process. In order to get highly densified Al-Si bulk specimens, the as-atomized and sieved powders were extruded at $500^{\circ}C$, Microstructure and tensile properties of the extruded Al-Si alloys were investigated in this study. Relative density of the extruded samples was over 98%. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) in stress-strain curves of the extruded powders increased after T6 heat treatments. Elongation of the samples was also increased from 1.4% to 3.2%. The fracture surfaces of the tested pieces showed a fine microstructure and the average grain size was about $1{\mu}m$.

Net Methane Oxidation Performance of Anaerobic Sewage Sludge

  • The anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) in anaerobic sewage sludge was characterized. The net methane oxidation was observed in samples amended with methane plus sulfate or with methane alone, whereas methane formation was observed in the samples without methane, indicating that methane oxidation and formation occurred simultaneously. The ratio of the net methane oxidation rate to $H_2S$ formation was 100:1, suggesting that the AOM was not closely associated with sulfate reduction in the anaerobic sludge. The net AOM was positively associated with the methane concentration and sludge dilution ratio. However, the rate of AOM was negatively correlated with organic substrate (acetate) concentration. Therefore, the production and oxidation of methane could be controlled by environmental conditions and dissolved organic compounds in the bulk solution.

Quantitative Analysiss and Physicl Properties of Dietary Fibers in Vegetables (채소류의 식이섬유 함량 및 물리적특성)

  • The contents of dietary fiber and its physical properties of vegetables were determined. The samples selected in this study were soybean sprouts (Glycine max MERILL sprouts) butterber (Petasites japonicus MIQ), taro stem(Colcasia antiquorum SCHOTT stem), bracken (Pteridium aquilinum KUHN)and dried Korean cabbage leaves(Brassica compestris L.leaves). The contents of dietary fiber were 20.96~50.62% of neutral detergent figer, 10.60-38.19% of acid detergent fiber, 1.74-10.88% of lignin, 5.79~33.29% of hemicellulose and 5.79-33.29% of cellulose. Butterber had the highest dietary fiber content. Mean waterholding capacity of samples was 5.65-12.26g.water/g.acetone dried powder and butterber and dried Korean cabbage leaves had higher water holding capacity value than the others. Densities were 140-250mg/ml of direct density and 385-417 mg/ml of bulk density.

[ $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ ] Superconductor by Adding with Non-superconducting Additives

  • The improvement of critical temperature $(T_c)$, critical magnetic field $(H_c)$, and critical current density $(J_c)$ of superconductor is important for practical applications. In this study, the additives such as metal oxides were used to improve the preparation conditions of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ superconducting bulk samples and depending on additives the properties of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ superconductor were studied. The effects of additives to the density, grain alignment, and porosity of samples that affect the critical current density of superconductor also have been investigated.
