Analysis of Bacterial Community Structure in Bulk Soil, Rhizosphere Soil, and Root Samples of Hot Pepper Plants Using FAME and 16S rDNA Clone Libraries

  • A culture-independent and -dependent survey of the bacterial community structure in the rhizosphere and soil samples from hot pepper plants was conducted using 16S rDNA clone library and FAME analyses. Out of the 78 clones sequenced, 56% belonged to Proteobacteria, 4% to high G+C Gram- positive group, 3% to Cytophyga-Flexibacter-Bacreroides, and 32% could not be grouped with any known taxonomic division. Among the 127 FAME isolates identified, 66% belonged to low G+C Gram-positive bacteria (Baciilus spp.) and 26% to high G+C Gram-positive bacteria. In a cluster analysis, the results for both methods were found to be strikingly dissimilar. The current study is the first comparative study of FAME and 165 rDNA clonal analyses performed on the same set of soil, rhizosphere soil, and root samples.

A Study on The Glass-Ceramics Containing Fluorine (불소 함유 결정화유리에 관한 연구)

  • The batches having excess SiO2 to tetrasilicic mica KMg2.5 (Si4O10)F2 were melted at 1450℃. The fabricated samples were heat-treated for the nucleation and the crystallization. The crystallized samples were investigated on several properties. The tetrasilicic mica composition with excess 10 wt% SiO2 was successful both in glassifying and in crystallizing. The optimum temperatures for the nucleation and the crystallization were 680℃ and 1000-1100℃, respectively. The mica and the cristobalite crystallines were identified after heat-treatment. The properties of the samples processed appropriately were as follows, bulk density 2.64g/㎤, thermal expansion coefficient ∼80×10-7/℃, Vicker's hardness ∼105 Kgf/㎟, bending strength ∼666Kgf/㎟, dielectric constant ∼11.1, tan δ 2.5%, volume resistivity 2.35×107∼1.3×1011{{{{ OMEGA }}cm, surface roughness 6.984㎛.

Magnetic levitation properties of single- and multi-grain YBCO bulk superconductors

  • Single-grain (c-normal or c-parallel) and multi-grain YBCO superconductors were prepared by a melt growth process with/without seeding. The magnetic levitation force and trapped magnetic field at liquid N2 temperature (77 K) of the YBCO superconductors were investigated. Samples for the levitation force measurement were zero-field cooled (ZFC) to 77 K, and samples for trapped field measurement were field-cooled (FC) using Nd magnets. As for the magnetic levitation force, the c-normal, single grain sample showed the largest value, whereas the multi-grain sample showed the lowest value. The trapped magnetic field of the c-normal and c-parallel single-grain samples was 4-5 times that of the multi-grain sample. In addition, as the external magnetic field (the number of magnets) increased, the both properties increased proportionally. These results were explained in terms of the orientation dependence of the levitation forces and the magnetic field trapping capability of the YBCO superconductor.

  • This aim of this study was to develop a process for creating bulk single-crystal YBaCuO superconductors in a high magnetic field. To support the bulk unidirectional growth of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$, $SmBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ seeds were planted inside YBaCuO composites and samples were produced by melting, enabling the growth of two YBaCuO superconductors. Due to the magnetism generated inside the superconductor of the upper sample, the magnetization inside the superconducting single crystals was evenly distributed, the sharpness of the induced magnetic force was improved, and the superconducting magnetization were significantly improved. This approach is widely applicable for the production of superconducting wires and current leads used for DC power breakers.

  • Properties of newly developed paper from Red Algae Pulp (RAP) were examined. The paper samples were prepared according tomixing RAP fiber with wood fibers, HwBKP and SwBKP, to form a paper with 60 g/$m^{2}$ in weight. It was prepared in three to four different levels of refining degree and pressure so that it can reveal different bulk level in order to clearly compare the opacity at equivalent bulk for each furnish compositions. printability of RAP fiber revealed superior effect on print through repression and initial ink absorption. Those properties are expected to improve further if printability improvement effect due to smoothness improvement is added.

  • Many researches were focused on the data which obtained from chemical bulk analysis. It is difficult to evaluate source contribution by wet type chemical bulk analysis. In this study, we have reviewed the characterization of individual particle for source identification. We analyzed by SEM/EDX methods. We have obtained average geometric particle diameter measured by optical diameter which were resulted from SEM/EDX image scan, representative physical diameter of individual particle was $3.38\;{\mu}m\;in\;A,\;3.67\;{\mu}m\;in\;B$. In the result of image analysis at each spots particles, both samples non-sphere shapes, C-rich particles. In consequence of chemical analysis of individual particle, each sampling sites some elements.

  • Thermoelectric materials convert temperature difference to electric power for power generation and vice versa for refrigeration. Recent advances in enhancing the thermoelectric figure-of-merit shed light on efficient power generation from the waste heat available in industries and vehicles. Nanoscale phenomena with both nanoscale constituent-embedded bulk samples and nanoscale materials proving enhanced thermoelectric performance have been widely reviewed. Bulk materials of crystal-orientation and nano-structured particle embedding seem to promise a higher thermoelectric figure-of-merit and an effective power generation application. As a preliminary study, Si-Ge nanocomposite was prepared with spark plasma sintering method and its properties were examined.

  • This study was conducted to measure the moisture content of soil using RF impedance in the range of 1 to 30MHz. Considering the water potential flow in the soils, two types of sensor such as parallel cylinder and perpendicular plate type were fabricated and tested. The capacitance and resistance of sonsors for soil samples having moisture content range of 2 to 27% were measured by Q-meter (HP4342). The higher soil moisture content was and the larger soil bulk density was, the more the capacitance of sensors increased. To eliminate the effect of bulk density on measuring soil moisture content using RF impedance, two kinds of model having the density independent functions such as the ratio of capacitance change to conductance change and weight of water and dry soils respectively were developed and estimated by regression analysis.

  • The SmBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$\sub$x/ single crystals were used as seeds to induced YBCO growth in MTG process. As the result, the large bulk oriented YBCO superconductors were prepared with dimension of plane 21mm and 32mm in diameter and 10mm in height. The typical Jc value of the sample is 6.5${\times}$10$^4$A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and its flux float force is 4.6N/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The oxygen absorption in large bulk textured YBCO samples in pure oxygen was studied at several constant temperatures. It can be divided into two steps: a chemical reaction step and a diffusion step.
