  • Recently, bulk hetero-junction cells have been extensively studied by many researchers. Most of these cells were fabricated by spin coater. However, the spin coating process is not favorable to the large-scaled industry because it is not compatible with roll-to-roll process. One of the alternative methods is Doctor blading. In this study, we fabricated large OPV cells having total area of $100cm^2$. The buffer layer was Poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) : poly-(styrenesulfonate) aqueous dispersion (PEDOT:PSS) and the active material is poly (3-hexythiophene) (P3HT) and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blend in the solvent of Chlorobenzene. All of the organic layers were coated by dragging the blade with a speed of 5~20 mm/s on the stage with a temperature of $50^{\circ}C$. As-bladed PEDOT:PSS layer was baked at $120^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes to eliminate the water. The cell structure is patterned ITO substrate/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:PCBM/LiF/Al. The topmost electrode, LiF/Al, was deposited by thermal evaporation. After depositing electrode, and the cell was annealed at $150^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. The measured ISC, VOC, fill factor, and PCE were 2.95 A, 5.86 V, 0.32, and 0.78%, respectively. PCE was quite low but the large active area could be obtained successfully.

  • Indium free consisting of three alternating layers GTO/Ag/GTO has been fabricated by radio-frequency (RF) sputtering for the applications as transparent conducting electrodes and the structural, electrical and optical properties of the gallium tin oxide (GTO) films were carefully studied. The gallium tin oxide thin films deposited at room temperature are found to have an amorphous structure. Hall Effect measurements show a strong influence on the conductivity type where it changed from n-type to p-type at $700^{\circ}C$. GTO/Ag/GTO multilayer structured electrode with a few nm of Ag layer embedded is fabricated and show the optical transmittance of 86.48% in the visible range (${\lambda}$ = 380~770 nm) and quite low electrical resistivity of ${\sim}10^{-5}{\Omega}cm$. The resultant power conversion efficiency of 2.60% of the multilayer based OPV (GAG) is lower than that of the reference commercial ITO. GTO/Ag/GTO multilayer is a promising transparent conducting electrode material due to its low resistivity, high transmittance, low temperature deposition and low cost components.

  • In this study, we have investigated the power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells utilizing conjugated polymer/fullerene bulk-hetero junction(BHJ) device structures. We have fabricated poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT), poly[2methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyl-oxy)-1-4-phenylenevinylene] as an electron donor, [6,6]-phenyl $C_{61}$ butyric acid methylester(PCBM-$C_{61}$)as an electron acceptor, and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS) used as a hole injection layer(HIL), after fabricated active layer, between active layer and metal cathode(Al) deposited LiF interlayer(5 nm). The properties of fabricated organic solar cell(OSC) devices have been analyzed as a function of different thickness. The electrical characteristics of the fabricated devices were investigated by means J-V, fill factor(FF) and power conversion efficiency(PCE). We observed the highest PCEs of 0.628%(MDMO-PPV:PCBM-$C_{61}$) and 2.3%(P3HT:PCBM-$C_{61}$) with LiF inter-layer at the highest thick active layer, which is 1.3times better than the device without LiF inter-layer.

  • The performance dependence of the P3HT:PCBM based bulk hetero-junction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs) on the electrical and the optical properties of amorphous InZnSnO (a-IZTO) electrodes as a difference in film thicknesses are examined. With an increasing of the a-IZTO thickness, the series resistance ($R_{series}$) of the OSCs is reduced because of the reduction of sheet resistance ($R_{sheet}$) of a-IZTO electrodes. Additionally, It was found that the photocurrent density ($J_{sc}$) and the fill factor (FF) in OSCs are mainly affected by the electrical conductivity of the a-IZTO anode films rather than the optical transparency at thinner a-IZTO films. On the other hand, despite the much lower $R_{series}$ comes from thicker anode films, the dominant factor affecting the $J_{sc}$ became average optical transmittance of a-IZTO electrodes as well as power conversion efficiency (PCE) in same device configuration due to the thick anode films had as sufficiently low $R_{sheet}$ to extract the hole carrier from the active material.

  • In this study, we have shown the power conversion efficiency of organic thin film photovoltaic devices utilizing a conjugated polymer/fullerene bulk-hetero junction structure. We use MDMO-PPV(Poly[2-methoxy-5-(3,7-dimethyloctyloxy -1,4-phenylenevinylene) as an electron donor, PCBM([6,6]-Phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester) as an electron accepter, and PEDOT:PSS used as a HTL(Hole Transport Layer). We have fabricated OPV(Organic Photovoltaic) devices as a function of the MDMO-PPV/PCBM concentration from 1:1 to 1:5. The electrical characteristics of the fabricated devices were investigated by means of I-V, P-V, F·F(Fill Factor) and PCE(power conversion efficiency). The power conversion efficiency was gradually increased until 1:4 ratio, also the highest efficiency of 0.4996% was obtained at the ratio.

  • Polymer-fullerene based bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells can be fabricated in large area using low-cost roll-to-roll manufacturing methods. However, because of the low mobility of the BHJ materials, there is competition between the sweep-out of the photogenerated carriers by the built-in potential and recombination within the thin BHJ film [12-15]. Useful film thicknesses are limited by recombination. Thus, there is a need to increase the absorption by the BHJ film without increasing film thickness. Metal nanoparticles exhibit localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) which couple strongly to the incident light. In addition, relatively large metallic nanoparticles can reflect and scatter the light and thereby increase the optical path length within the BHJ film. Thus, the addition of metal nanoparticles into BHJ films offers the possibility of enhanced absorption and correspondingly enhanced photo-generation of mobile carriers. In this work, we have demonstrated several positive effects of shape controlled Au and Ag nanoparticles in organic P3HT/PC70BM, PCDTBT/PC70BM, Si-PCPDTBT/PC70BM BHJ-based PV devices. The use of an optimized concentration of Au and Ag nanomaterials in the BHJ film increases Jsc, FF, and the IPCE. These improvements result from a combination of enhanced light absorption caused by the light scattering of the nanomaterials in an active layer. Some of the metals induce the plasmon light concentration at specific wavelength. Moreover, improved charge transport results in low series resistance.

  • Transparent and conductive multilayer thin films consisting of three alternating layers FZTO/Ag/$WO_3$ have been fabricated by radio-frequency (RF) sputtering for the applications as transparent conducting oxides and the structural and optical properties of the resulting films were carefully studied. The single layer fluorine doped zinc tin oxide (FZTO) and tungsten oxide ($WO_3$) films grown at room temperature are found to have an amorphous structure. Multilayer structured electrode with a few nm Ag layer embedded in FZTO/Ag/$WO_3$ (FAW) was fabricated and showed the optical transmittance of 87.60 % in the visible range (${\lambda}=380{\sim}770nm$), quite low electrical resistivity of ${\sim}10^{-5}{\Omega}cm$ and the corresponding figure of merit ($T^{10}/R_s$) is equivalent to $3.0{\times}10^{-2}{\Omega}^{-1}$. The resultant power conversion efficiency of 2.50% of the multilayer based OPV is lower than that of the reference commercial ITO. Asymmetric D/M/D multilayer is a promising transparent conducting electrode material due to its low resistivity, high transmittance, low temperature deposition and low cost components.

  • Solution-processed tungsten oxide thin film with thickness of about 30 nm is prepared from ammonium tungstate. This layer is introduced into the interface between the poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) layer and the ITO electrode to be used as an electron blocking layer. The annealed tungsten oxide thin films at $150^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$ show amorphous phase, while the $400^{\circ}C$ -annealed tungsten oxide film shows crystalline phase. At $150^{\circ}C$ annealing temperature, the conversion efficiency is significantly improved from 0.71% to 1.42% as the condition is changed from vacuum to air atmosphere, which is related to oxidation state of tungsten in amorphous phase. For the air annealing condition, the conversion efficiency is further increased from 1.42% to 2.01% as the temperature is increased from $150^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$, which is mainly due to the removal of the chemisorbed water. However, a slight deterioration in photovoltaic performance is observed when the temperature is increased to $400^{\circ}C$, which is ascribed to poor electron blocking ability due to the formation of crystalline phase. It is concluded that $W^{6+}$ oxidation state and amorphous nature in tungsten oxide interlayer is essential for blocking electron effectively from the active layer to the ITO electrode.

  • Inverted bulk hetero-junction polymer solar cells (iPSC) composed of P3HT/PC61BM blends on the ZnO modified with benzoic acid derivatives-based self-assembled monolayers (SAM) are fabricated. Compared with the device using the pristine ZnO, the devices with ZnO surface modified SAMs derived from benzoic acid such as 4-(diphenylamino)benzoic acid (DPA-BA) and 4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzoic acid (Cz-BA) as an electron transporting layer show improved the performances. It is mainly attributed to the favorable interface dipole at the interface between ZnO and the active layer, the eective passivation of the ZnO surface traps, decrease of the work function and facilitating transport of electron from PCBM to ITO electrode. The power conversion eciency (PCE) of iPSCs based on DPA-BA and Cz-BA treated ZnO reaches 2.78 and 2.88%, respectively, while the PCE of the device based on untreated ZnO is 2.49%. The open circuit voltage values ($V_{oc}$) of the devices with bare ZnO and SAM treated ZnO are not much different. Whereas, higher the fill factor (FF) and lower the series resistance ($R_s$) are obtained in the devices with SAMs modification.
