  • An aircraft maintenance hangar is a building that stores, maintains, and inspects expensive aircraft. The frequency of fire occurrence is low, but the resulting human and material damage can be very serious. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a qualitative analysis of the fire safety of the currently operating fire suppression systems for aircraft maintenance hangars using the Fault Tree method, and then performed a quantitative analysis using the failure rate data for the derived basic events and analyzed the importance of the minimal cut sets. As a result of the qualitative analysis by the minimal cut set, it was found that there were 14 accident paths that could be expanded to a large fire, due to the fire control failure of the aircraft hangar fire suppression system. The quantitative analysis revealed that, the probability of the fire expanding into a large one is $2.08{\times}E-05/day$. The analysis of the importance of the minimal cut set shows that four minimal cut sets, namely the fire detector and foam head action according to the zone and blocking of the foam by the aircraft wing and the fire plume, had the same likelihood of causing the fire to develop into a large one, viz. 24.95% each, which together forms the majority of the likelihood. It was confirmed for the first time by fault tree method that the fire suppression system of aircraft maintenance hangars is not suitable for fires under the aircraft wings and needs to be improved.

  • Purpose: To propose a conceptual design of a novel source for intensity modulated brachytherapy. Materials and Methods: The source design incorporates both radioactive and shielding materials (stainless steel or tungsten), to provide an asymmetric dose intensity in the azimuthal direction. The intensity modulated intravascular brachytherapy was performed by combining a series of dwell positions and times, distributed along the azimuthal coordinates. Two simple designs for the beta-emitting sources, with similar physical dimensions to a $^{90}Sr/Y$ Novoste Beat-Cath source, were considered in the dosimetric feasibility study. In the first design, the radioactive and materials each occupy half of the cylinder and in the second, the radioactive material occupies only a quater of the cylinder. The radial and azimuthal dose distributions around each source were calculated using the MCNP Monte Carlo code. Results: The preliminary hypothetical simulation and optimization results demonstrated the 87$\%$ difference between the maximum and minimum doses to the lumen wall, due to off-centering of the radiation source, could be reduced to less than 7$\%$ by optimizing the azimuthal dwell positions and times of the partially shielded intravascular brachytherapy sources. Conclusion: The novel brachytherapy source design, and conceptual source delivery system, proposed in this study show promising dosimetric characteristics for the realization of intensity modulated brachytherapy in intravascular treatment. Further development of this concept will center on building a delivery system that can precisely control the angular motion of a radiation source in a small-diameter catheter.

  • Cement-bonded particleboard is being used as outdoor siding material all over the world, because this composite particularly bears a light weight, high resistance against fire, decay, and crack by cyclic freezing and thawing, anti-shock property, and strength enhancement. Construction systems are currently changing into a frame-building style and wooden houses are being constructed with prefabrication type. Therefore, they require a more durability at outdoor-exposed sides. In this study, the cement hydration property for Korean pine particle, Japanese larch particle and face- and middle layer particles (designated as PB particle below) used in Korean particleboard-manufacturing company was investigated, and the rapid manufacturing characteristics of cement-bonded particleboard by supercritical $CO_2$ curing was evaluated. Korean pine flour showed a good hydration property, however, larch flour showed a bad one. PB particle had a better hydration property than larch flour. The addition of $Na_2SiO_3$ indicated a negative effect on hydration, however, $MgCl_2$ had a positive one. Curing by supercritical $CO_2$ fluid gave a conspicuous enhancement in the performances of cement-bonded particleboards compared to conventional curing. $MgCl_2$ 3%-added PB particle had the highest properties, and $MgCl_2$ 1%-added Korean pine particle had the second class with the conditions of cement/wood ratio of 2.7, a small fraction-screened particle and supercritical curing. On the contrary, the composition of non-hammermilled or large fraction-screened particle at cement/wood ratio of 2.2 was poorer. Also, the feasibility for actual use of 3%-added, small PB particle-screened fraction was greatest of all the conventional curing treatments. Relative superiority of supercritical curing vs. conventional curing at dimensional stability was not so apparent as in strength properties. Through the thermogravimetric analysis, it was ascertained that the peak of a component $CaCO_3$ was highest, and the two weak peaks of calcium silicate hydrate and ettringite and $Ca(OH)_2$ were present in supercritical treatment. Accordingly, it was inferred that the increased formation of carbonates in board contributes to strength enhancement.

  • As a typical construction material, concrete has been used in building all kinds of structures since the late $19^{th}$ century. Although it was recognized to secure durability as long as the regulations on design and construction have been reasonably complied, the trends of life-shortening and deterioration have frequently occurred due to all kinds of the external effects that have been experienced during the procedures of using the structures. To make matters even worse, deterioration of the concrete structures according to deterioration can not be controlled any more. Finally, the reality is that repair and maintenance are necessary in the maintenance aspect of the concrete structure. In this study, CRM(Chemical Resistance of Laminating Reinforcement Method), which had been developed to reinforce the surface of concrete and specially improve chemical resistance performance, has been applied to enhance the existing repairing and maintenance method. Therefore, the result has been drawn with comparison and analysis of the specimens applied with the general repairing and maintenance method and CRM through a variety of durability test in this study. With the result of the test, durability of the specimen applied with CRM has been more improved than the existing repairing and maintenance method, which is judged as because of the laminating effect due to reinforcement of epoxy impregnated of alkali-resistance fiber and double layered fiber reinforced seat.

  • Recently, The use of the curtain wall method is increasing in construction. The curtain wall construction is widely applied to the exterior wall of the building for shortening construction period and economical efficiency. However, the replacement of deterioration of the weather resistance and structural behavior of the sealing material connecting the curtain wall method and the glass frame is necessary for introduction of the stable curtain wall method and quality improvement in accordance with KS F 4910 standard. In this study, the elastic restoring force test was performed in the external environment. In this study, the deterioration of the sealant was evaluated for structural sealants. In Korea, studies on the variable displacement behavior of structural sealants are lacked. In this study, the reproduced results in laboratory conditions are compared with the deteriorating conditions exposed to the external environment, and they are reflected in the design of sealing materials in the future. According to the results of the study, it was confirmed that the existing structure sealant meets the quality standard of KS F 4910, but in the conditions performed in this study, adhesion failure of the specimen and cracking of the surface occurred. Especially, in the weather resistance test, it is necessary to evaluate the long-term durability performance of the structural sealant used in the curtain wall method by checking the insoluble state of all the test pieces. Therefore, in order to apply a conventional structural sealant to the site, it is necessary to introduce another durability performance evaluation.

  • Numerous past studies have shown that safety and serviceability of many concrete infrastructures and buildings built in 1970's have far less strength capacities than their original intended design capacities, thereby requiring repair and strengthening. Currently, aged concrete structures are being repaired using various methods developed in the past. Unfortunately, these methods do not consider the specific conditions that these members are under, but they merely attach repairing materials on the external surface for random strength improvements. Therefore, in order to improve repair and strengthening methods by considering composite behavior between repairing material and structural member, enhanced construction methodologies are needed. Also, the enhanced repairing and strengthening methods must be able to be implemented on structural members constructed using high performance concrete to meet the present construction demand of building mammoth structures. Therefore, in this study, a repairing and strengthening method for retrofitting high strength concrete (HSC) columns that can effectively improve column performance is developed. A square HSC column's cross-sectional shape is converted to an octagonal shape by attaching precast members on the surface of the column. Then, the octagonal column surface is surface wrapped using Carbon Fiber Sheets (CFS). The method allows maximum usage of confinement effect from externally jacketing CFS to improve strength and ductility of repaired HSC columns. The research results are discussed in detail.

  • Experiments using real guided weapons for the development of the LADAR(Laser radar) are not practical. Therefore, we need computing environment that can simulate the 3D detections by LADAR. Such simulations require dealing with large sized data representing buildings and terrain over large area. And they also need the information of 3D target objects, for example, material and echo rate of building walls. However, currently used 3D models are mostly focused on visualization maintained as file-based formats and do not contain such semantic information. In this study, as a solution to these problems, a method to use a spatial DBMS and a 3D model suitable for LADAR simulation is suggested. The 3D models found in previous studies are developed to serve different purposes, thus, it is not easy to choose one among them which is optimized for LADAR simulation. In this study, 4 representative 3D models are first defined, each of which are tested for different performance scenarios. As a result, one model, "Body-Face", is selected as being the most suitable model for the simulation. Using this model, a test simulation is carried out.

  • There are index adjustment method and item adjustment method in estimation methods for price fluctuation rate of public constructions. A relevant regulation has put item adjustment method as a principle, but in most construction, contract sum adjustment has been made by index adjustment method. Hence, this study, by figuring out width and causes of the gap between index adjustment method and item adjustment method through direct comparative analysis, solved inequality caused by difference between them and suggested a rational way against irrationality of each method. For building operations of public housing construction, a detailed fluctuation rate by index adjustment method and item adjustment method of construction cost elements of the same construction, that is, direct material cost, direct labor cost and historical construction cost was estimated to analyze difference between two adjustments and establish its cause. Across the analysis, it was found that fluctuation rate by item adjustment method was estimated lower than that by index adjustment method and difference between methods for estimating fluctuation rate of quotation unit price and application of index unrelated to construction type and construction nature are main causes of the difference. This study has a significance in that, for smooth contract sum adjustment between contracting parties, it practically proved the real difference between adjustment methods by conducting comparative analysis of the difference in direct correspondence way.

  • Production of iodine-131 by neutron activation of tellurium in tellurium dioxide ($TeO_2$) material requires a target that meets the safety requirements. In a radiopharmaceutical production unit, a new lid for a can was designed, which permits tight sealing of the target by using tungsten inert gaswelding. The leakage rate of all prepared targets was assessed using a helium mass spectrometer. The accepted leakage rate is ${\leq}10^{-4}mbr.L/s$, according to the approved safety report related to iodine-131 production in the TRIGA Mark II research reactor (TRIGA: Training, Research, Isotopes, General Atomics). To confirm the resistance of the new design to the irradiation conditions in the TRIGA Mark II research reactor's central thimble, a study of heat effect on the sealed targets for 7 hours in an oven was conducted and the leakage rates were evaluated. The results show that the tightness of the targets is ensured up to $600^{\circ}C$ with the appearance of deformations on lids beyond $450^{\circ}C$. The study of heat transfer through the target was conducted by adopting a one-dimensional approximation, under consideration of the three transfer modes-convection, conduction, and radiation. The quantities of heat generated by gamma and neutron heating were calculated by a validated computational model for the neutronic simulation of the TRIGA Mark II research reactor using the Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code. Using the heat transfer equations according to the three modes of heat transfer, the thermal study of I-131 production by irradiation of the target in the central thimble showed that the temperatures of materials do not exceed the corresponding melting points. To validate this new design, several targets have been irradiated in the central thimble according to a preplanned irradiation program, going from4 hours of irradiation at a power level of 0.5MWup to 35 hours (7 h/d for 5 days a week) at 1.5MW. The results showthat the irradiated targets are tight because no iodine-131 was released in the atmosphere of the reactor building and in the reactor cooling water of the primary circuit.

  • This study conducted to understand effects of CA (CaAl2O4) and CA2 (CaAl4O7) ratio on chloride binding ability and compressive strength and pore structure of cement mortar incorporating mixture of CA and CA2. The Portland cement based specimens were mixed with the clinkers CA and CA2, and these calcium aluminate clinker mixture were replaced 0, 5, 10% by weight of cement. After all the test specimens were cured for 28 days under water curing, they were immersed in the distilled water and NaCl solution. As a result, 28 days compressive strength of all specimens was similar, and As the replacement ratio of calcium aluminate clinker in the specimen increased, Friedel's salt production tended to increase. However, it was dependent on the amount of Al2O3 in the level of 5% replacement and CA ratio in the level of 10% replacement. Through equilibrium isotherm result, it was also indicated that as replacement ratio of calcium aluminate clinker in cement matrix increased, chloride binding capacity was improved, and chloride penetration was suppressed. In this study, the specimen replaced with 10% of the calcium aluminate clinker mixture (CA 39%, CA2 60%) was remarkable to control chloride attack. We figured out necessity to understand optimal CA/CA2 ratio to effectively apply CA2 as a sustainable building material by improving the chloride binding ability in Portland cement based system.
