  • Louis 1. Kahn was a wise architect who learned from history. He developed his own unique architecture by combining his creative sense with design principles and vocabularies that can be found in historical architecture. When restricting a space, he surrounded the space with thick walls as it had been done in historical buildings. The interior space encompassed by this method became a center-oriented and stable space. The objective of this study is to find the characteristics of Kahn's interior spaces by analyzing his projects in terms of space, form, daylight and materials. For this purpose, five works that are considered to have significance from the aspect of interior design were selected and analyzed. The characteristics realized through this study are as follows. A) Spatial features: 1) Generally speaking, each required space has been arranged symmetrically. 2) Being clearly defined as the main space, the subsidiary space, or the service space, each space also was placed very functionally. 3) The space encompassed by thick walls became a center-oriented, stable space. And in most case, it was characterized as a dark space. B) Formative features: 4) The space was defined as a basic solid such as a cylinder, a hexahedron, and an octagonal box, and was developed into a complex shape by the recessed windows. 5) Historical vocabularies such as an arch, a vault, and a dome were reinterpreted in new ways by kahn's own eyes. 6) Haying diverse shapes, the skylights enrich the space in terms of form. C) Daylight feature: 7) The vertical light entering through the skylights creates a solemn and mysterious atmosphere. 8) Given the shadows from the windows that change according to time, the interior space becomes a very vivid space. D) Material feature: 9) Harmonized with cold and smooth materials such as exposed concrete, metal, and glass, the interior space provides a modern atmosphere. 10) Warm appearing wood was used for furniture and part of walls or floors. The effective use of wood takes on a role that is quite complementary to the cold ambience of the smooth and cold materials. 11) With flexibility In building shapes, the concrete becomes the form-endowing materials.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the development and characteristics of movable-housing planning concept. A document research method was used to analyze and classified the development of the movable-housing concept of 20th century. Through this study, the following conclusions have been reached; First, the origin of the movable-housing is from the prehistoric and traditional portable buildings, also due to the emergence of nomadic lifestyle using car traveling and mobile home in the 1920's. Second, the development of the movable-housing in 20th century was classified as follows; (1) In order to obtain the productivity and efficiency drawing from the industrialized-housing in the early of 1900s, movable furniture and flexibility was proposed. (2) American mobile home in 1920's, influenced by the development of car industry, was the most successful example of a factory-built building to be found in the world. (3) Dymaxion house and dome by R.B.Fuller, an aggregation of high-tech mechanical equipment, had a great impact on the development the concept of 'mobility' and influenced Archigram & Metabolist's movable capsule ideas in 1960's. (4) The lightweight materials such as plastic, duralumin and pneumatic structure were adopted for movable-housing in 1960's. Through this research, It is discovered that the stage of social development has close links with the developing aspects of movable-housing concepts. This study shows that the combination of three planning concepts such as flexible housing, mobile-housing and capsule will be more ideal in movable-housing planning rather than relying on just one type.

  • According to the prosecutors' office's statistics for 2014, 53% of a bicycle users have experienced theft. The reason for the high rate of bicycle stolen in Korea is that there is no bicycle management system. This is because they do not use bicycle numbers to manage bikes like cars do. Most people do not know if they have a VIN(Vehicle Identification Number) on their bike. If the buyer registers the bicycle in the bicycle management blockchain system, anyone can view the information registered in the chain, so that if the bicycle number is filled in, the bicycle can be identified. In addition, when an accident occurs, blockchain will record what kind of equipment it is replacing, like an automobile, to manage all the information about the bicycle. In this way, consumers can inquire whether they have a history of accident when they make a second-hand transaction. In this paper, we propose a method to construct bicycle management system using bicycle VIN.

  • Earthquake response of mid-rise to high-rise buildings provided with friction dampers is investigated. The steel buildings are modelled as shear-type structures and the investigation involved modelling of the structures of varying heights ranging from five storeys to twenty storeys, in steps of five storeys, subjected to real earthquake ground motions. Three basic types of structures considered in the study are: moment resisting frame (MRF), braced frame (BF), and friction damper frame (FDF). Mathematical modelling of the friction dampers involved simulation of the two distinct phases namely, the stick phase and the slip phase. Dynamic time history analyses are carried out to study the variation of the top floor acceleration, top floor displacement, storey shear, and base-shear. Further, energy plots are obtained to investigate the energy dissipation by the friction dampers. It is seen that substantial earthquake response reduction is achieved with the provision of the friction dampers in the mid-rise and high-rise buildings. The provision of the friction dampers always reduces the base-shear. It is also seen from the fast Fourier transform (FFT) of the top floor acceleration that there is substantial reduction in the peak response; however, the higher frequency content in the response has increased. For the structures considered, the top floor displacements are lesser in the FDF than in the MRF; however, the top floor displacements are marginally larger in the FDF than in the BF.

  • This study focused on the state that CMS(Content Management System) is not widely implemented in Korea and many companies lack a sense of the necessity. The author proceeded as follows. First of all, the definition of CMS was mentioned. Next, the history and current state of CMS in domestic and foreign nations were proposed. And the methodology and rationales were explained to use CMS effectively. The results may be summarized as follows. First, the appropriate design should be processed. Second, value-oriented management (not technology-oriented) should be aimed. Third, feedback by publicity and responses should be activated. When a content provider adopts CMS, the provider should take special care of long-term communications and trust building with non-technical users.

  • What has been rapidly changed and developed is not only technology, but also language and culture, of which the diverse consensus has been speedily formed between generations and spread throughout all the social grades. Therefore, Neologisms need to be understood as part of the cultural history that is created at each period. We cannot keep neologisms, initially formed among the youths, from spreading all over the generations, not just for their enjoyment, convenience, and familiarity, but more for the fact that they are impossible to be replaced in use. Another reason is that a community is created according to language. The youths would like to make distance from the existing community by building an invisible wall of new language. This paper is intended to deal with neologisms, centered on visual pun. The characteristics of the Neologisms are the result of the tendency of the younger generation to avoid interference and to enjoy adding ingenuity to the existing order. That is why in all ages Neologisms are created, and although they differ in form, the principles of new word generation are old. We will also consider the historical characteristics of neologism in this paper.

  • In centralized control system, complicated control systems including sensors, power supply and dampers should be required to satisfy the target response of large-scale structures. The practical applications of the centralized control system, however, is very difficult due to high order finite element model of structures, uncertainty of models, and limitations of the excitation system. In this study, the decentralized response-dependent MR damper of which magnetic field is automatically modulated according to the displacement or velocity transferred to the damper without any sensing and computing systems. this decentralized response-dependent MR damper are investigated according to the ranges of relative magnitude between the control force of MR damper and the story shear force of structures by nonlinear time history analysis. Finally, its performance is compared with centralized LQR algorithm which is used in general centralized control theory for a three story building structure.

  • This paper presents the determination of the structural system of the Changsha IFC T1 tower with 452 m in architectural height and 440.45 m in structural height. Sensitivity analyses are carried out by varying the location of belt trusses and outriggers. The enhancement of seismic capacity of the outer frame by reasonably adjusting the column size is confirmed based on parametric studies. The results from construction simulation including the non-load effect of structures demonstrate that the deformation of vertical members has little effect on the load-bearing capacity of belt trusses and outriggers. The elastoplastic time-history analysis shows that the overall structure under rare earthquake load remains in an elastic state. The influence of the frame shear ratio and frame overturning moment ratio on the proposed model and equivalent mega column model is investigated. It is found that the frame overturning moment ratio is more applicable for judging the resistance of the outer frame against lateral loads. Comparison is made on the variation of these two effects between a classical frame-core tube-outrigger structure and a structure with diagonal braces between super columns under rare earthquakes. The results indicate that plasticity development of the top core cube of the braced structure may be significantly improved.

  • In this study, a smart sky-bridge composed of MR damper and FPS has been proposed and vibration control performance of a smart sky-bridge for the connected buildings was investigated. To this end, 10-story and 20-story building structures connected by a smart sky-bridge were selected as example structures and El Centro and Kobe earthquakes, which have near and far fault ground motion characteristics respectively, were used for time history analyses. In order to effectively control the smart sky-bridge, fuzzy logic controller was developed and multi-objective genetic algorithm was used to optimize fuzzy logic controllers. Based on optimization results, it has been seen that there is a trade-off between seismic responses of 10-story and 20-story buildings and a suite of Pareto optimal solutions of fuzzy logic controllers for seismic response control can be obtained by multi-objective genetic algorithm. It is shown from numerical study that seismic responses of adjacent buildings can be efficiently controlled by using a smart sky-bridge.
