As building becomes larger, taller and more complex due to industrialization and urbanization, it tends to be vulnerable to fire and establishment of effective measures for fire safety is demanded. Especially the fact that the smoke hinders evacuation and fire-fighting activities as well as becomes the major cause of life casualty emphasizes the importance of smoke control system. To design and operate the smoke control system success folly, it is necessary to analyze and predict precisely the thermoflow induced by fire in building. The unsteady three-dimensional analysis of thermoflow induced by fire with diverse variables such as building structure, fire conditions and smoke control facilities can be effectively carried out with numerical method In this study, using the FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulation) program that spreads widely as the analysis tool for thermoflow of fire, the analysis of thermoflow in partition of building induced by fire and comparison with the experimental results for assessment of numerical analysis are presented.

Supplementary damping systems, such as tuned mass dampers (TMDs) and tuned sloshing dampers (TSDs) - also known as tuned liquid dampers (TLDs) - have been successfully employed to reduce building motion during wind events. A design of a damping system consisting of a TMD and two TSDs performing in unison has been developed for a tall building in Taiwan to reduce wind-induced motion. The architecturally exposed TMD will also be featured as a tourist attraction. The dual-purpose TSD tanks will perform as fire suppression water storage tanks. Linearized equivalent mechanical TSD and TMD models are coupled to the structure to simulate the multi-degree of freedom system response. Frequency response curves for the structure with and without the damping system are created to evaluate the performance of the damping system. The performance of the combined TMD-TSD system is evaluated against a conventional TMD system by computing the effective damping produced by each system. The proposed system is found to have superior performance in acceleration reduction. The combined TMD-TSD system is an effective and affordable means to reduce the wind-induced resonant response of tall buildings.

In this paper, to overcome local damages of structures, an uncertainty of structural model, installing sensors of structures, and economics of building system, decentralized semi-active magnetorheological(MR) damper using the displacement or velocity transferred to the response of floor installed damper is proposed. Relative magnitude between the control force of dampers and the story shear force is difined as design variables and the performance indices response spectra analysis through nonlinear time history analysis excited by seismic loads is performed according to this design variables. And the performance of this decentralized MR damper is compared with previous centralized LQR control algorithm using 3-stories benchmark building structure excited by El Centro (1940, N.S) in order to evaluate the application of building structures.
This paper analyzes the dynamical modeling of high-rise building and the design of control systems for suppressing undesired vibrational motion at the top of the building originated by natural disturbances such as earthquakes, wind, etc. The control system is designed according to H$_{2}$ and H$_{\infty}$ robust control theories. The performance of the building with H$_{\infty}$ controller is analyzed in the time and frequency domains and the vibration isolation and robustness properties of H$_{\infty}$ and H$_{2}$ control systems are examined and compared. The design procedure, structure and properties of H$_{\infty}$ controllers are analyzed.zed.
Wind-adaptable design (WAD) provides a new method for super-tall buildings to lessen design conflicts between architectural prerequisites and aerodynamic requirements, and to increase the efficiency of structural system. Compared to conventional wind-resistant design approach, the proposed new method is to design a building in two consecutive stages: a stage in normal winds and a stage during extreme winds. In majority of time, the required structural capacity is primarily for normal wind effects. During extreme wind storms, the building's capacity to wind loads is reinforced by on-demand operable flow control measures/devices to effectively reduce the loads. A general procedure for using WAD is provided, followed by an exploratory case study to demonstrate the application of WAD.
In this paper, a HVAC controller which has a bilinear system is designed to control the air temperature in building room and a saving of energy on the HVAC system. For modeling of the HVAC bilinear system, AHU(Air Handling Unit) is modeled on the control of inside-outside air flow using three dampers in a duct. A heat exchanger and the single room are also modeled by the energy conservation law. Under the modeling of the HVAC bilinear system, the control's law of the bilinear HVAC system is derived by Lyapunov's non-linear theory and Deress's the linear feedback laws for bilinear system. In this paper it was proved that the controller of the HVAC bilinear system is able to control the air temperature with a disturbance in order to get a target of temperature in the building room by the computer simulation when the control inputs regulate the air flow rate and a capacity of the heat exchanger.
This paper proposes a new Web based-control concept & design method and implementation of LonWorks network system for a large scale renewable energy energy control and monitoring system in building. The Experimental LonWorks network system using LonWorks/Ethernet(Web) server is designed and fabricated. This article addresses issues in architecture of LonWorks/Ethernet sever, embedded processors architecture for converting LonTalks protocol to Modbus protocol and software, and Internet technologies. It is also verified that the multi-induction motor control and monitoring system using LonWorks/Ethernet server have available, interoperable, reliable performance characteristics from the experimental results, Especially, The seamless integration of TCP/IP networks with control networks allows access to any control point from anywhere. Thus, the results provide a available technical data for remote distributed control system of industrial and buildings field.
Some design formulas and design procedures for single and multiple tuned liquid column dampers (TLCDs) are proposed in this study. Previous studies show that if the properties of the TLCD system are properly selected then the TLCD could be as effective as the traditional tuned mass dampers. In addition, the TLCD system offers advantages such as flexibility in terms of installation, little maintenance required, and potentials for multiple usage, etc., which are incomparable by other mechanical types of dampers. In this paper, a set of optimal properties such as length and head loss of a TLCD system are derived under the assumption that the building vibrates in a dominate mode and is subjected to Gaussian white noise excitation. A design procedure for a single TLCD system will be illustrated and discussed. Due to the nonlinearity in the damping term, the TLCD system is sensitive to the loading intensity. This loading sensitivity could limit the application range of the TLCD system. It will be shown in this paper that such a nonlinear effect can be reduced by using multiple TLCDs. As a demonstrative example, the control effects on a flexible building modeled as a single degree-of-freedom system subjected to white noise excitation will be analyzed and discussed using single or multiple TLCDs.

Preliminary results of the dynamic analysis of a two-fluid molten-salt breeder reactor (MSBR) system are presented. Based on an earlier work on the preliminary dynamic model of the concept, the model presented here is nonlinear and has been revised to accurately reflect the design exemplified in ORNL-4528. A brief overview of the model followed by results from simulations performed to validate the model is presented. Simulations illustrate stable behavior of the reactor dynamics and temperature feedback effects to reactivity excursions. Stable and smooth changes at various nodal temperatures are also observed. Control strategies for molten-salt reactor operation are discussed, followed by an illustration of the open-loop load-following capability of the molten-salt breeder reactor system. It is observed that the molten-salt breeder reactor system exhibits "self-regulating" behavior, minimizing the need for external controller action for load-following maneuvers.
We have developed 1 kW-class PEMFC-battery hybrid system independently powering to the building, through the process of system design, current load characteristics analysis, power system configuration for demonstration site and performance evaluation. In order to use the fuel cell and battery as the hybrid type, a control technology for the charging/discharging decision and charging speed of the battery is required rather than using fuel cell. Also output power distribution between PEMFC and the battery is a core of energy management technology. It is confirmed that it is possible to supply independently 1kW powering the building to ensure optimal energy management through the power control experiment of the hybrid system.
