  • Most policies of VOD services are mainly studied about server system, and make no touch on clients buffer stabilization which is the basis of guaranteeing playback quality and playing without cut off. In this paper, we proposed a skipping frame transfer policy that can sending dynamic buffer control signal to server in accordance with clients buffer state of starvation or overrun, and server transfers a skipped frame to client after receive the control signal. And through a simulation, we show the suggested policy is more efficiency on playback quality by buffer stabilization which is by preventing loss and miss for receiving frame due to grow worse client buffer state.

  • Due to the complexity of part flow and limited resources, FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System) develops blocking, starvation and deadlock problems, which reduce its performance. In order to minimize such problems buffers are imposed between workstations of the manufacturing lines. In this paper, we are concerned with finding the optimal buffer allocation with regard to maximizing system throughput in limited total buffer capacity situation of FMS. A dynamic programming algorithm to solve the buffer allocation problem is proposed. Computer simulation using Arena is experimented to show the validation of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we present the design and analyze the transmission rate of a control algorithm for the client buffer on the VOD systems. The design is based on the server's data transmission rate and clients' data consumption rate. The proposed algorithm stabilizes the client's buffer by reducing the oscillation phenomena of the buffer. And it uses the BCT (Buffer Check Time) to reduce the scheduling load of the client system. The client's data consumption rate and the buffer size are calculated on the basis of BCT. In case that the predicted buffer size operates in the overrun or starvation the buffer. As the load fluctuation of the network, the transmission rate control policy cannot stabilize the client's buffer alone. The media scaling policy, therefore, also performs its complementary part in stabilizing the client's buffer, and performance evaluation of the proposed algorithm is provided through simulation.

  • In this paper, we propose a multicast P2Patching technique in the application layer. The P2Patching technique serves VOD stream effectively with Patching in P2P environment. The P2Patching provides multicast tree construction technique that reduces the server load and minimizes the start delay with extended multicast technique. And we provide a fast recovery technique by tree failure and dynamic buffering scheme that guarantees the continuous streaming by frequent tree disconnections. Comparing the method with that of $P2Cast^{[12]}$, we obtained the better performance by our scheme in terms of average join count, service rejection probability, tree recovery failure and buffer starvation. The average about 16$\%$ of the improvement is shown by the simulation. Most of all, the performance of buffer starvation and average join count shows a significant improvement than that of P2Cast.

  • The overlay multicast that has been recently presented as an alternative for the IP multicast has been getting much persuasion by the system resource and the network bandwidth and the advancement of the network cost. we propose a overlay multi_casting network policy for efficient multimedia services with P2P join scheduling. In order to evaluate the performance of proposed scheme, We test the performance of multi_casting nodes with average join count, the maximum guaranteed waiting time and buffer starvation ratio with similar techniques. The result of simulation shows improved about 15${\sim}$20% of performance.

  • In a previous study, we have isolated a number of lactobacilli from Korean women, and one of them (KLB46) was identified as Lactobacillus crispatus by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. For the ecological treatment of bacterial vaginosis (BV) cell suspension of L. crispatus KLB46 was instillated into BV patients. L. crispatus KLB46 was found to persist for several days in cell suspension with no nutrients. In this study, in order to assess the influence of starvation on physiological activity, we compared the viability and culturability of KLB46 following suspension in various buffer solutions. A pair of in situ fluorescent dye was used to assess viability (i.e. membrane integrity) and the culturability was examined by plate count assay. A rapid epifluorescence staining method using the LIVE/DEAD Bacterial Viability Kit $(BacLight^{TM})$ was applied to estimate both viable and total counts of bacteria in cell suspension. $BacLight^{TM}$ is composed of two nucleic acid-binding stains ($SYTO\;9^{TM}$ and propidium iodide). $SYTO\;9^{TM}$ penetrates all bacterial membranes and stains the cells green while propidium iodide only penetrates cells with damaged membranes, therefore the combination of the two stains produces red fluorescing cells. Optimal staining conditions for $BacLight^{TM}$ were found to be with 0.0835M $SYTO\;9^{TM}$ and 0.05M propidium iodide for 15 min incubation at room temperature in dark. When cells were microscopically examined during 140 hours of starvation, the culturability decreased markedly while the viability remained relatively constant, which suggests that large fraction of KLB46 cells became viable but non-culturable (VBNC) upon starvation.

  • Automobile manufacturing consists of body-line, painting-line, and assembly-line. These production lines are disposed in series and go through a flow process, so according to the status of pre & post processing, a suspension happens in a line by a starvation(impossibility of production by insufficient supply) or blocking(impossibility of production by exceed capacity). Therefore, to prevent a loss of production coming from a starvation or blocking, a storage such as WBS or PBS is independently owned and operated. The paper suggests the simulation model of integrated storage which can operate it by integrating each storage performing a role as a buffer of line. Specifically, the paper found the answers about reasonable number of Stacker Crane and AGV(Automatic Guided Vehicle) and suggested a methodology of operation which is available to operate them. Also, it compared an efficiency between a model of current storage and integrated storage through simulation. As a result, it turned out that the model suggested in the paper was more efficient on suspension of painting-line stop than a current storage.

  • Number of aspects, not only nutritional but social as well as political involved in human starvation pose nowadays global problems. In order to help establish the minimum nutritional requirements in the daily life of a man and to free people as well from either undernourishment, malnutrition or even starvation many workers have devoted themselves so far on the research programs to know what and how number of metabolic events take place in animals in vivo. It is the purpose of the present paper to examine in effect to what extent both of the protein and nucleic acids (DNA & RNA) together with an enzyme, guanine deaminase, which converts guanine into xanthine and in turn ends up to uric acid as an end product, undergo changes, quantitatively during acute starvation, using the mouse as an experimental animal. The mouse was strictly inhibited from taking foods except drinking water ad libitum and was sacriflced 24, 48, and 72 hours following starvation thus acutely induced. The animals consisted of two experimental groups, one control and another starvation groups, each being consisted of 6-24 mice of whose body weights ranged in the vicinity of 10 g. The animals were sacriflced by a blow on the head, followed by immediate excision of their livers into ice-cold distilled water, washing adherent blood and other contaminant tissues. The liver was minced foramin, by an all-glass homogenizer immersing it in an ice-bath, followed by subsequent fractionatin of the homogenate (10% W/V in 0.25M sucrose solution made up with 0.05M phosphate buffer of pH 7.4). For the liver protein and guanine deaminase assay, the 10% homogenate was centrifuged at 600 x g for 10 minutes to eliminate the nuclear fraction; and for the estimation of DNA and RNA, the homogenate was prepared by the addition of 10% trichloroacetic acid in order to free the homogenate from the acid-soluble fraction, the remaining residue being delipidate by the addition of alcohol and dried in vacuo for later KOH (IN) hydrolysis. The changes in body and liver wegihts during acute starvation were checked gravimetrically. Protein contents in the liver were monitored by the method of Lowry et al; and guanine deaminase activities were followed by the assay of liberated ammonia from the substrate utilizing the Caraway's colorimetry. The extraction of both DNA and RNA was performed by the Schmidt-Thannhauser's method, which was followed by Marmur's method of purification for DNA and by Chargaff's method of purification for RNA. The determinations of both DNA and RNA were carried out by the diphenylamine reaction for the former and by the orcinol reaction for the latter. The following resume was the results of the present work. 1. It was observed that the body as well as liver weights fall abruptly during starvation, and that the loss of body weight showed no statistical correlation with the decreases in the content of liver protein. 2. The content of liver protein and activity of liver guanine deaminase activity as well decline dramatically, and the specific activities of the enzyme (activity/protein), however, decreased gradually as starvation proceeded. 3. Both of the nucleic acids, DNA and RNA, showed decrements in the liver of mouse during acute starvation; the latter, however, being more striking in the decline as compared to the former. 4. The decreases in the liver protein content as resulted from the acute starvation had no statistically significant correlation with the decrements of DNA in the same tissue, but had regressed with a significant statistical correlation with the fall of RNA in the tissue. 5. The decrease in the activity of guanine deaminase in the liver of mouse during acute starvation was functionally more proportional to the decrease in RNA than DNA, and moreover correlated with the changes in the content of the liver protein. 6. The possible mechanisms involved during in this acute starvation as bring the decreases in the contents of DNA, protein, and guanine deaminase were discussed briefly.
