A study on the usage of the Buddhist sanctum in Ancient and Medieval Times -Focused on the study of the literature- (고대 및 중세 불전(佛殿)의 이용방식에 관한 연구(硏究) -문헌연구를 중심으로-)

  • The main buildings of the important Buddhist temples - the pagoda, the Buddhist sanctum, the lecture hall - was surrounded by the cloister until Koryo Dynasty. And the Buddhist sanctum was located the center. It meant that the Buddhist sanctum was important building. It is very important thing that we understand the usage of the interior space because the architectural space consists of the unified space by the organic function of the interior space and the exterior space. But there is not so much the study on the interior space of the Buddhist sanctum. So, the purpose of this study is to understand of the interior space of the Buddhist sanctum in Ancient and Medieval Times. Till now, it was impossible that the Buddhist monk or the General public entered the Buddhist sanctum in Ancient and Medieval Times because they regarded the Buddhist sanctum as the place of sacrosanctity and the floor was finished by bricks. But, we saw that they could enter the Buddhist sanctum. Of course the floor of the Buddhist sanctum was finished by bricks, but they spread mats on the floor, took off his shoes in the interior space and used the furniture for sitting on. The plan of the Buddhist sanctum was designed by the process of the ceremony and the way of the enshrinement of the Buddhist statues because it is the place to enshrine the Buddhist statues. They performed the ceremony like as pray, worship, offer food to Buddha, HaengDo - an act to turn round an object of worship - and so on in the interior space of the Buddhist sanctum.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the periodic characteristics of creative Buddhist hymns in our country, and confirm the role of Buddhist hymns in popularizing Buddhism and the activities and meanings of pioneers who contributed to such Buddhist hymns. The further purpose of this study is to confirm the utility of Buddhist hymns. In the present, the problems of Buddhist hymns can be pointed out as follows. First, some Buddhist hymns which were created about 50 years ago are used, so that new Buddhist hymns can not be established. Second, their degree of completion as music are not sufficient. Third, it is insufficient to study the miswriting of transmitted Buddhist hymns. Fourth, there is no systematical management of Buddhist hymns. The countermeasures for these problems can be presented as follows. First, it is necessary to expand the utilization of Buddhist hymns in Buddhist ceremonies. Second, new creative Buddhist hymns are required. Third, the religious body should reinforce its support for promoting interests in Buddhist hymns. Fourth, it is necessary to activate temple concerts in order to strengthen the popularization of Buddhist hymns. First of all, it is required to confirm the usefulness of creative Buddhist hymns for popularizing Buddhism and create and utilize new Buddhist hymns appropriate to contemporary senses.

A Study on the Tradition of the Setting of Seungdang and Gowon in the Zen Buddhist Temples of Song Dynasty (송대 선종사원의 승당과 고원 배치 전통)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the historical background of the setting of seungdang(僧堂) and gowon (庫院) in the Zen Buddhist temples of Song dynasty, in terms of as a Buddhist temple universality and as a Zen temple specificity, through the historical reference investigation on its relevance to the Buddhist temples of Tang dynasty. In the Zen Buddhist temples of Song dynasty, the Zen meditation space of seungdang was located on the west side of Buddha hall, and the kitchen and officiating priest's living space of gowon was located on the east side of Buddha hall. Through the analysis of historical reference it was confirmed that, in the Buddhist temples of Tang dynasty, the Zen meditation section of seonwon(禪院) was on the west side, and the gowon was on the east side too. Therefore, it can be said that, the setting method of seungdang and gowon of the Zen Buddhist temples of Song dynasty was established above tradition of the Tang dynasty Buddhist temples.

Evolution, Transformation, and Representation in Buddhist Architecture - The Square Shrines of Buddhist Monasteries in Central Asia after the Fourth Century

  • This study notices that all religions in Central Asia from the fourth century through seventh century C.E. provided considerable hands in keeping a uniform unity through a process of assimilation, although art and architecture were greatly stimulated by the creative genius of the many people. The study thus intends to argue that the common ideas of rituals and primitive forms of religious shrines lead the square-based layout of Buddhist shrines the unity and universality in the architectural products of particular regions or epochs: i.e. the "square-based plan" in Buddhist temples of Central Asia was a significant prototype in the synthesis with pre-Buddhist architectural models and Buddhist universal ideas. Thus, this thesis notes that they did not lose the universal principles of the Buddhist shrine plans due to ritual functions, and even there have been never differences from pre-Buddhist building models remarked by the periods and the venues in which they were produced, although there had been continuous evolutions and adaptive transformations in the local tastes of religious architecture. Accordingly, this study discusses how such plans in Buddhist architecture had been consistently produced within that regional style also representative of the local idioms of architecture, and how they were adopted in the sites, founded on the composition of ritual functions. The foreign architectural cultures were selectively chosen getting along with local building types of each site according to each taste for architecture as a result.

  • This study examines the Symbolic notions of Haein Buddhist Monastery based on the context of Feng-shui. Through the study, it is verified that the geographical features surrounding the Haein Buddhist Monastery are imbued with the basic layout of the monastery and the constitutional elements of the Haein Buddhist Monastery are structured and formed with the architecture and landscape of the monastery. Thus, the study maintains that the siting and the arrangement of the Haein Buddhist Monastery reflect the context of Feng-shui.

A Study on the North and South Square-Platform at the Lecture Hall Sites of Goryeo Buddhist Temples (고려사원 강당지 남북 방형단에 관한 연구)

  • A very unique case is found in the architectural remains related to the north and south square-platform at the lecture hall site of Hwangnyongsa, that of Anyangsa, and the estimated lecture hall site of Beopsusa as they are not observed in the other lecture halls. The platform has been discovered at only those three Buddhist temples from Goryeo, and its case has not been found in ancient Buddhist temples of China and Japan. This study thus set out to investigate the north and south square-platform at lecture hall sites by examining in details its architectural remains at the three Buddhist temples and reviewing the Buddhist literature about the lecture halls of ancient Buddhist temples. Based on the findings, it was estimated that the architectural remains of north and south square-platform at the lecture hall sites of Buddhist temples were those of platform for Buddhist sermons or those of high chair platform. While the north square-platform involved the remains of north high chair for the Lecturer that gave lectures on the Buddhist scriptures, the south one did those of south high chair for the Reader who recited the Buddhist scriptures.

  • This study is focused on finding out the differences in wearing robe styles of Buddhist Statues between Shilla and Tien-lung Mountain. (1) Shilla Buddhist Statues are wearing Pyun-Sam that is similar to Jeogori(the traditional jacket of Korea). (2) Bok-Gyen-Uy of Tien-lung Buddhist Statues are roundish shape, and that of Shilla Buddhist Statues are oblique line. It is possible to conclude that these shapes are very concerned with the wearing style of each nation. (3) We can find another difference in the chest sash. Chest sach of Tien-lung Buddhist Statues is more functional, but that of Shilla Buddhist Statues is more decorative. (4) Wearing Kasa, Young-Ja(i,e.string of kasa) is used in Shilla Buddhist Statues, but not in Tien-lung Buddhist Statues. This the most different thing between Shilla Buddhist Statues and Tien-lung Buddhist Statues.

A Study on the Classification of Chinese Buddhist Books (중국불교전적분류의 일연구)

  • The purposes of this study are to understand: 1) the changing process of ancient Chinese Buddhist books catalog with comparison of catalog. 2) the characteristics of current chinese Buddhist books Catalog with analysis of their classification structure. The results of the study can be summarized as follows: 1) The origin of Chinese Buddhist books catalog is the Chongrijungkyongmokrok that was compiled by Doan, however this catalog can not be discovered. 2) The oldest Buddhist books catalog which is available is the Chulsamjangkigib by seungu 3) The Sujungkyongmokrok by Bubkyong, et al. is known as the most reasonable and systematic Buddhist books catalog. 4) The Kaewonsukkyorok which is compiled by Jiseung in Tang dynasty, is evaluated as the most perfect and useful catalog. This catalog had a great effect on the later catalogs. 5) The important current Buddhist books catalogs are the Bingajungsa catalog, the Wangmunsan catalog, the Yukukkyun Catalog, et al., each of them has an own characteristics.

Relation between the Location of the Korean Buddhist Temples and Transportation (우리나라 사찰건축(寺刹建築)의 입지(立地)와 교통(交通)의 연관성(聯關性)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • There is an opinion that Korean Buddhist Temples located in mountains(山地寺刹) should be built since the Secret Buddhism was introduced and the Zen Buddhism was widely distributed over But, Korean Buddhist temples were already in the mountains before the introduction of Zen Bluddhism. Moreover, Zen Buddhist temples were actually not located at mountainous region, but located at plain area in mountains. Thus it is necessary to modify the idea of that the location of temples were only under the influence of Secret Buddhism. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relation between the location of the Korean Buddhist Temples and transportation. The results of this study are as follows; Based on the legends originated from the buddhist temples, the traditional maps, and the political situations, it has been disclosed that the locations of Korean Buddhist Temples have the relations with the traffic roads. Therefore politically, militarily, and socially, the Korean Buddhist Temples have played important roles since the Three Kingdoms. The Buddhist temples need lodging facilities called Won-Woo for the ordinary people, due to change of the characteristics of the Buddhism in Korea from politically to socially. But the lodging facilities stood apart from main region for the ascetic exercise of the Buddhist priests.

A Study on the Characteristics of Building Composition of Zen Buddhist Temples in Northern Song Dynasty (북송대 선종사원의 가람 구성 특징에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics of Zen Buddhist temple's building composition of the Northern Song dynasty, through the analysis of literature historical material, such as Seonwon chenggyu(禪苑淸規), Cham cheontae odaesan gi(參天台五臺山記) and so on. The building composition method of Zen Buddhist temple in Northern Song dynasty, which grasped from the Seonwon chenggyu, reflects the actual situation of the temples in that time. And it was ascertained that, the Zen Buddhist temple's building composition of the Northern Song dynasty was basically same to that of Southern Song dynasty. And the comparative analysis was attempted between Zen Buddhist temples and that of other Buddhism sect described in Cham cheontae odaesan gi. From this analysis, the common features as Buddhism temple and the characteristics of building composition as Zen Buddhist temple was clarified.
