  • We identified two soil stichotrichs, Eschaneustyla lugeri Foissner, Agatha & Berger, 2002 and Oxytricha auripunctata Blatterer & Foissner, 1988, which were collected from Sarabong, Jeju and Ajoong-ri, Jeonju in Korea, respectively. Eschaneustyla lugeri had the following characteristics: size in vivo $170-230{\mu}m{\times}40-60{\mu}m$; body elongate elliptical and often very narrow in the posterior region, highly flexible; cortical granules present; 48-67 macronuclear nodules; 27-47 frontal cirri; 3-5 buccal cirri; frontoterminal row and rightmost midventral row; transverse cirri absent; 4 dorsal kineties; 4-9 caudal cirri. Oxytricha auripunctata had the following characteristics: size in vivo $75-95{\mu}m{\times}25-35{\mu}m$; body elliptical, both ends moderately narrowly rounded; orange-yellow cortical granules and yellowish crystals; 3-4 transverse cirri; 5 dorsal kineties; 3 caudal cirri. These two ciliates are first reported in Korea. We describe these ciliates based on live observations and protargol-impregnated specimens.

  • This study was undertaken to determine the adequate bracket slot torque degrees in Korean The subjects were consisted of plaster casts of 30 male and 30 female They had acceptable profile, normal occlusion, no loss of tooth and no experience of dental treatment Labiolingual or buccolingual inclinations of individual tooth were estimated as +, - degrees on the fixed model by use of dental surveyor, contact angle gauge and measuring grid The following conclusions were obtained 1 Adequate degrees of bracket slot torque in Korean were obtained 2 The degrees of labiolingual or buccolingual inclination of every tooth were very variable according to the individuals 3 Almost constant torque degrees were observed on the maxillary buccal segments 4 Progressive increase in minus torque degrees were observed from the mandibular canines to the 2nd molars.

  • Oncholaimid nematode, Oncholaimus secundicollis Shimada, Kajihara and Mawatari, 2009, is firstly reported based on a comparative morphological study. The present specimens of O. secundicollis are collected from rocky intertidal seagrass on the eastern coast of Korea. Oncholaimus secundicollis is distinguished from all of its congeners by the following combination of morphological characteristics: buccal cavity large with thick cuticular wall and three teeth, left subventral tooth larger than right subventral or dorsal teeth, and the presence of two remarkable precloacal papillae with nine pairs of cloacal setae and single ventral tail papilla with two pairs of short setae. In this study, we provide taxonomic description and illustration of unrecorded species of the genus Oncholaimus.

  • The patient, 18-year-old girl, had a class III malocclusion with the lateral compression of the maxilla due to the premature loss of the canines, mild mandibular prognathism, and mouth breathing habit. The treatment plan consisted of 1) rapid maxillary expansion 2) a period of retention 3) extraction of the first mandibular premolars instead of surgical correction 4) completion of orthodontic treatment with multibanded system. The maxilla was separated in the midline by the application of orthopedic forces via a cemented rapid maxillary expansion device. After 18 months, She gained functional overbite-overjet relationship, good interdigitation of buccal segments, and facial harmony due to the retraction of lower anterior teeth.

  • Hemangioma can present difficult management problems to the oral & maxillofacial surgeon when their removal is indicated. Cryosurgery has also been employed for the treatment of hemangiomas and offers several advantages over the other treatment methods. This is a case report of hemangioma which was treated by cryosurgery. The cryosurgery technique has proved to be painless, bloodless and safe. The healing process was completed at 4 weeks postoperatively with minimal invisible scar.

  • Herpes virus family is highly infectious to patients, their families and dentists. The diagnosis of herpes infection is based on the characteristic clinical appearance and the location of the lesions. Herpes Simplex Virus(HSV) usually acquired through direct contact with infected lesions or body fluids, and the prevalence of HSV infection increases progressively from childhood. Primary infections provoke herpetic gingivostomatis typically affects the tongue, lips, gingival, buccal mucosa and palate. Recurrent infections give rise to vesiculo-ulcerative lesions at vermilion border of lip(herpes labialis). In the form of chickenpox, Varicella Zoster Virus(VZV) usually is infected in childhood. VZV spreads in the affected primary afferent nerve to the skin and produces a vesicular rash and pain. Epstein-Barr Virus(EBV) infects B cells and cause infectious mononucleosis. Latent EBV infection has also been implicated in Burkitt lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Cytomegalovirus(CMV) is associated with immune-compromised patient such as organ transplantation and AIDS patients.

  • Central odontogenic fibroma (COF) is a rare benign tumor that accounts for 0.1% of all odontogenic tumors. A case of COF (simple type) of the mandible in a four-year-old boy is described in this report. The patient showed asymptomatic swelling in the right inferior border of the lower jaw for one week. A panoramic radiograph showed a poorly-defined destructive unilocular radiolucent area. Cone-beam computed tomography showed expansion and perforation of the adjacent cortical bone plates. A periosteal reaction with the Codman triangle pattern was clearly visible in the buccal cortex. Since the tumor had destroyed a considerable amount of bone, surgical resection was performed. No recurrence was noted.

  • In this study, the methods were developed to measure polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) in the air, metabolites of pyrene and benzo(a)pyrene via human urine, genetic polymorphisms in human buccal cell for evaluation of the health effects about environmental pollution. We have also performed a preliminary molecular epidemiology study on residents in the metropolitan area and workers in workplace for these method applications.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bioflavonoids naringin on dental caries and periondontal disease in the albinorat. Twenty-five-day-old-male rats were fed the experimental diets for 42 days in this work at the end of the 42-day experimental period. The tooth surfaces were examined under a dissecting microscope. The sulcular caries lesions were recorded : the first molars were more affected than the second and third molars. Alveolar bone loss was measured on the buccal and lingual aspects of each molar: three site measurements (mesialpoint midpoint and distalpoint) were taken on the first molars. The results showed that the bioflavonoids, naringin had beneficial effects in the prevention of periodontal disease.

  • Because of advances of technologies in the field of genmic epidemiology in the recent years, specimen collection, storage and analysis became an essential part of research methodologies. DNA is now being used in epidemiologic studies to evaluate genetic risk factors and specimens other than the fresh whole blood can De used for PCR. Therefore, All nucleated cells, such as buccal swabs and urine specimens, are suitable for DNA analysis. For an unlimited source of genomic DNA, EBV transformation of lymphocytes can be used for immortalization. However, the type of specimen collected in genomic epidemiologic studies will depend on the study where the epidemiologist play a leading role for the design. We also briefly described various finds of analysis for SNP that is an essential part of the genomic epidemiology.
