  • The flow fields in Gas Bubble Driven Circulation Systems were numerically analyzed. In various gas flow rate and bubble size, the flow characteristics were predicted. Eulerian-Eulerian approach was used for the formulation of both the continuous and dispersed phases. The modification of the general purpose computer program PHOENICS code was employed to predict the mean flow fields, turbulent characteristics, gas dispersion, volume fraction. The predicted shows very satisfactory agreement with experimental results for all regions of ladle. The results are of interest in the design and operation of wide variety of material processing.

  • An experiment on bubble-driven flow was performed in order to understand fundamental knowledge of flow structure around a rising bubble in a stagnant fluid. The measurement technique consists of a combination of the three most often used PIV techniques in multiphase flows: PIV with fluorescent tracer particles, the digital phase separation with a masking technique and a shadowgraphy. The key point of the measurement is that the background intensity of a PIV recording can be shifted to a higher level than a bubble region using a shadowgraphy in order to distinguish from fluorescent particles and a bubble as well. Flow fields were measured without an inaccurate analysis around a fluid-bubble interface by using only one camera simply.

  • An experimental study to evaluate dynamic structures of flow and turbulence characteristics in bubble-driven liquid flow in a rectangular tank with a varying flow rate of compressed air is conducted. Liquid flow fields are measured by time-resolved particle image velocimetry (PIV) with fluorescent tracer particles to eliminate diffused reflections, and by an image intensifier to acquire enhanced clean particle images. Instantaneous vector fields are investigated by using the two frame cross-correlation function and bad vectors are eliminated by magnitude difference technique. By proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis, the energy distributions of spatial and temporal modes are acquired. When Reynolds number increases, bubble-induced turbulent motion becomes dominant rather than the recirculating flow near the side wall. The total kinetic energy transferred to the liquid from the rising bubbles shows a nonlinear relation regarding the energy input because of the interaction between bubbles and free surface.

  • To verify floatability of ABB (Air bubble barrier), we compared bubble swarm behavior with and without the air-driven ejector. Experiment was conducted using the fabricated air-driven ejector with 5 mm nozzle on the bottom of 1 m3 water tank. Reynolds number of air in the nozzle was ranged 1766-13248. We analyzed data with statistical method using image processing, particle mage velocimetry (PIV) and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis. As a result of POD analysis, there was no significant eigenmode in bubbly flow generated from the ejector. It means that more complex turbulent flows were formed by the ejector, thereby (1) making bubbles finer, (2) promoting three-dimensional energy transfer between bubble and water, and (3) making evenly distributed velocity profile of water. It is concluded that the air-driven ejector could enhance the performance of ABB.

  • In the present study, the characteristics of upward bubble flow were experimentally investigated in a liquid bath. An electro-conductivity probe was used to measure local volume fraction and bubble frequency. Since the gas is concentrated at the near nozzle, the flow parameters are high near the nozzle. In general their axial and radial values tended to decrease with increasing distance. For visualization of flow characteristics, a Particle Image Velocimetry (P.I..V) and a thermo-vision camera were used in the present study. The experimental results show that heat transfer from bubble surface to water is largely completed within z=10mm from the nozzle, and then the temperature of bubble surface reaches that of water rapidly. Due to the centrifugal force, the flow was more developed near the wall than at bubble-water plume. Vortex flow in the bottom region was relatively weaker than that in the upper region.

  • In this paper, the recirculation flow motion and mixing characteristics driven by air bubble stream in a rectangular water tank is studied. The time-resolved PIV technique is adopted for the quantitative visualization and analysis. 488 nm Ar-ion CW laser is used for illumination and orange fluorescent ($\lambda_{ex}=540nm,\;\lambda_{em}=560nm$) particle images are acquired by a PCO 10bit high-speed CCD camera (1280$\times$1024). To obtain clean particle images, 545 nm long pass optical filter and an image intensifier are employed and the flow rates of compressed air is 3 l/min at 0.5 MPa. The recirculation and mixing flow field is further investigated by time-resolved POD analysis technique. It is observed that the large scale recirculation resulting from the interaction between rising bubble stream and side wall is the most dominant flow structure and there are small scale vortex structures moving along with large scale recirculation flow. It is also verified that the sum of 20 modes of velocity field has about 67.4% of total turbulent energy.

  • In this study, we conducted analysis of bubble dynamics and flow of liquid phase change material(PCM) using shadowgraphy and particle image velocimetry(PIV). Characteristics of internal flow varied depending on locations of injection when solid PCM was liquefied from heated vertical wall. When bubbles rose immediately, they exhibited elliptical shape and zigzag trajectory. In contrast, when bubbles rose after merging at the bottom of solid PCM, with equivalent diameter for the inter-wall distance of 0.64 or greater, they showed a jellyfish shape and strong rocking behavior. It was observed by the PIV that the small ellipse bubbles made most strong flow inside the liquid PCM. Furthermore, the flow velocity was highest in the case of front injection, as the directions of temperature gradients and bubble-driven flow were aligned. The results underscore the significant influence of injection location on various characteristics, including bubble size, shape, rising path of bubbles, and internal flow.

  • Numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the bubbly flow in the liquid with vertical temperature gradient. The objective of this study is to establish an accurate numerical prediction program of gas-liquid two-phase flows in a vertical temperature gradient condition, whose mathematical model is formulated by the Eulerian-Lagrangian model. The present numerical results reveal the temperature mixing mechanism and the fluid dynamical characteristics induced by the bubbly flow in the liquid with stratified temperature. The effects of bubble radius, void fraction, and gas flow rate on bubble-driven convective flow are considered, too.

  • In this paper, the recirculation flow motion and mixing characteristics driven by air bubble flow in a rectangular water tank is studied. The Time-resolved PIV technique is adopted for the quantitative visualization and analysis. 532 nm Diode CW laser is used for illumination and orange fluorescent particle images are acquired by a PCO 10bit high-speed camera. To obtain clean particle images, 545 nm long pass optical filter and an image intensifier are employed and the flow rates of compressed air is changed from 2 l/min to 4 l/min at 0.5 MPa. The recirculation and mixing flow field is further investigated by the POD analysis technique. It is observed that the large scale counterclockwise rotation and main vortex is generated in the upper half depth from the free surface and one quarter width from the sidewall. When the flow rates are increased, the main vortex core is moved to the side and bottom wall direction.
