  • This paper deals with the numerical simulation of the behavior of single bubble rising near the free surface. Volume fraction of fluid (VOF) method with continuum surface force (CSF) model, the well known method for two phase flow simulation is adopted. A bubble of spherical shape positioned beneath the free surface is assumed at the initial stage. The difference according to the fluid properties of surrounding medium is examined. Simulation results are depicted and explained with the time history of bubble shape, velocity field and vorticity distribution.

  • Bubble behaviors in a circular tube have been analyzed numerically and experimentally by a three-dimensional tomography method, Initially, a multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART) which showed better results for previous studies of numerical simulations has been performed to confirm the accuracy of the three-dimensional reconstruction for the two-phase flow using a computer-synthesized phantom, Then, bubble behaviors have been investigated experimentally by the three-dimensional MART method using real projected data captured simultaneously by a laser and three CCD cameras for three angles of view, Also, the transient reconstructions have been attempted to analyze the real-time oxygen-bubble movements in water by the interval of 1/30 second.

  • According to change of flow around a circular tube for freezing, measured a variety of salinity of frozen layer. This study was experimentally performed to investigate freezing behavior of sea water along a vertical cooled a circular tube with bubbly flow. The experiments were carried out for a variety of parameter, such as air-bubble method, cooled -tube temperature and air-flow rate. It was found that the experimental parameters gave a great influence on the freezing rate and the salinity of the frozen layer.

  • Nucleate boiling experiments with constant wall temperature of heating surface were performed using R113 for almost saturated pool boiling conditions. A microscale heater array and Wheatstone bridge circuits were used to maintain a constant wall temperature condition and to measure the heat flow rate with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Bubble images during the bubble growth were taken as 5000 frames a sec using a high-speed CCD camera synchronized with the heat flow rate measurements. The geometry of the bubble during growth time could be obtained from the captured bubble images. The bubble growth behavior was analyzed using the new dimensionless parameters for each growth regions to permit comparisons with previous results at the same scale. We found that the new dimensionless parameters can describe the whole growth region as initial and later respectively. The comparisons showed good agreement in the initial and thermal growth regions. The required heat flow rate for the volume change of the observed bubble was estimated to be larger than the instantaneous heat flow rate measured at the wall. Heat, which is different from the instantaneous heat supplied through the heating wall, can be estimated as being transferred through the interface between bubble and liquid even with saturated pool conditions. This phenomenon under a saturated pool condition needs to be analyzed and the data from this study can supply the good experimental data with the precise boundary condition (constant wall temperature).

  • To analyze bubbles generated by an ABB (Air Bubble Barrier), we developed image processing procedure and statistical analysis method. Air was discharged from 5 mm nozzle as swarm form at the bottom of 1 m3 water tank. Flow rates of discharged air are ranged from 2 L/min to 20 L/min and these are corresponding to Reynolds number of 1766-17663. Rise velocity of bubble is extracted by using image process pretending intrusive method. Mean equivalent velocity was calculated using void fraction weighting factor. Bubble diameter is obtained and compared with correlations in the literature. Also, we present a correlation according to the result of this study. Mean velocity and mean diameter of bubbles increase with increasing gas Reynolds number. But these parameters show an asymptotic trend when they approach to high Reynolds number.

Experimental Observations of Boiling and Flow Evolution in a Coiled Tube

  • A sequence of visually experimental observations was conducted to investigate the flow boiling and two-phase flow in a coiled tube. Different boiling modes and bubble dynamical evolutions were identified for better recognizing the phenomena and understanding the two-phase flow evolution and heat transfer mechanisms. The dissolved gases and remained vapor would serve as foreign nucleation sites, and together with the effect of buoyancy, centrifugal force and liquid flow, these also induce very different flow boiling nucleation, boiling modes, bubble dynamical behavior, and further the boiling heat transfer performance. Bubbly flow, plug flow, slug flow, stratified/wavy flow and annular flow were observed during the boiling process in the coiled tube. Particularly the effects of flow reconstructing and thermal non-equilibrium release in the bends were noted and discussed with the physical understanding. Coupled with the effects of the buoyancy, centrifugal force and inertia or momentum ratio of the two fluids, the flow reconstructing and thermal non-equilibrium release effects have critical importance for flow pattern in the bends and flow evolution in next straight sections.

  • In this study, a series of experiments were performed to investigate the variations in the behavior of green water generation and the flow kinematics of bubbly flow on deck with various flare angles. The experiments were conducted in a 2-D wave flume using a simplified model of a BW Pioneer FPSO operating in the Gulf of Mexico, with a 100-year return period wave condition. The green water phenomena were captured with a high speed CCD camera. The variations in the behavior of the green water generation were investigated with various flare angles, and the horizontal mean velocity profiles of bubbly flow on deck obtained using bubble image velocimetry (BIV) were provided. The differences in flow kinematics of bubbly flow on deck were analyzed with various flare angles.

댐 붕괴흐름의 해석해(Ritter의 해)를 이용한 월파유속 분석 (Analyses of Overtopping Velocity using Analytical Solution(Ritter's Solution) of Dam-Break Flow)

  • 본 연구는 수리실험으로 얻어진 권파에 의한 월파수괴의 유속을 댐붕괴흐름과 비교하여 거동의 유사성을 검토하였다. 댐붕괴흐름은 해석해가 간략하고 월파 거동과 유사함으로 인해 월파의 유속산정에 이용되어왔다. 월파는 일반적으로 많은 연행기포로 인해 기존의 유속측정기법을 적용하는데 제한을 받게 되므로, 본 실험에서는 기포나 기포조직모양을 이용한 기포영상유속계를 이용하여 월파 유속을 측정하였다. 실험결과로부터 월파의 유속단면을 검토하였고, 단면의 최대유속과 수심평균유속을 댐붕괴흐름의 1차원 해석해인 Ritter의 해와 비교하였다. 해석해와의 비교를 위해 댐붕괴 전 초기수심을 파랑조건과 월파의 측정값으로부터 유도하였다. 파랑조건으로부터 추정된 붕괴 전 초기 수심을 이용한 해석해는 측정된 유속의 분포형태에 있어서는 차이를 보였으나, 월파수괴의 전면속도로부터 산정된 초기수심을 이용한 해석해는 유속크기의 비교에서 좋은 일치를 보였다.

수평관 내 물-공기 이상류 거동에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Investigation on the Behavior of Water-Air Two-phase Flows in a Horizontal Pipe)

  • A series of laboratory experiments has been performed in order to investigate the behavior of water-air two-phase flow in a horizontal pipe. A conductivity meter has been applied to detect the irregular alternation of air at the specific points in flows. The experimental condition has been established according to the water and air flowrates. Passing time, which is the time length for a measuring probe to pass through the entire length of a specific bubble, has been defined to evaluate the size of bubbles in the flow. Passing length, which can be considered as the equivalent value to bubble size and determined from the product of passing time and cross-sectional averaged velocity, and its corresponding occurrence frequency have been analyzed to classify the air flow patterns according to the condition of air and water fluxes. From the result, the dependancy of flow patterns on the variation of air-water flux ratio has been investigated and the existence of thresholds also checked for classifying the behavior of air in the flow.

Experimental investigation on bubble behaviors in a water pool using the venturi scrubbing nozzle

  • The containment filtered venting system (CFVS) filters the atmosphere of the containment building and discharges a part of it to the outside environment to prevent containment overpressure during severe accidents. The Korean CFVS has a tank that filters fission products from the containment atmosphere by pool scrubbing, which is the primary decontamination process; however, prediction of its performance has been done based on researches conducted under mild conditions than those of severe accidents. Bubble behavior in a pool is a key parameter of pool scrubbing. Therefore, the bubble behavior in the pool was analyzed under various injection flow rates observed at the venturi nozzles used in the Korean CFVS using a wire-mesh sensor. Based on the experimental results, void fraction model was modified using the existing correlation, and a new bubble size prediction model was developed. The modified void fraction model agreed well with the obtained experimental data. However, the newly developed bubble size prediction model showed different results to those established in previous studies because the venturi nozzle diameter considered in this study was larger than those in previous studies. Therefore, this is the first model that reflects actual design of a venturi scrubbing nozzle.
